Some of the reviews here, like mine, are about the fossil walks led by Paul from Jurassic Gems 9not the Old Forge). I can't find out how to review Jurassic Gems directly- they don't seem to be set up for review - so I'll add my post here.
We called into Jurassic Gems (down the alley to the side of Roly's Fudge on Broad Street) to look at the fossils and we noticed the chalkboard for the Fossil Walk that afternoon. After countless years of fruitless hunting, we decided to go on this Guide led walk.
The group consisted of two families, with the children aged from a pre-schooler to a Y9, with a Y3 in the middle. Paul managed to make the almost three hour session appealing to all ages, adults included!
Firstly, I really liked the fact that Paul took a very thorough approach to beach/cliff Health and Safety. Clearly I knew that the cliffs around that area are very unstable, but I had no idea that the landslips that people climb on to grub for fossils are mostly liquid underneath and are a huge sinking hazard.
After reaching the beach, Paul gave a short lecture on fossils and handed around examples for us all to examine. We then moved off to scour two specific sites.
Paul was constantly on hand to advise / identify items found by adults and children alike. His scientific knowledge is boundless and his anecdotes are fairly generous too! We found various fossils and all the items found by Paul were divi'd up between the two families.
It really was fantastic value for money and will be an afternoon that we will remember for years to come as a family. If only to remind ourselves of all the years we spent fossil hunting the wrong way, in the wrong places . . . . . !
