Some of the reviews here, like mine, are about the fossil walks led by Paul from Jurassic Gems 9not the Old Forge). I can't find out how to review Jurassic Gems directly- they don't seem to be set up for review - so I'll add my post here.

We called into Jurassic Gems (down the alley to the side of Roly's Fudge on Broad Street) to look at the fossils and we noticed the chalkboard for the Fossil Walk that afternoon. After countless years of fruitless hunting, we decided to go on this Guide led walk.

The group consisted of two families, with the children aged from a pre-schooler to a Y9, with a Y3 in the middle. Paul managed to make the almost three hour session appealing to all ages, adults included!

Firstly, I really liked the fact that Paul took a very thorough approach to beach/cliff Health and Safety. Clearly I knew that the cliffs around that area are very unstable, but I had no idea that the landslips that people climb on to grub for fossils are mostly liquid underneath and are a huge sinking hazard.

After reaching the beach, Paul gave a short lecture on fossils and handed around examples for us all to examine. We then moved off to scour two specific sites.

Paul was constantly on hand to advise / identify items found by adults and children alike. His scientific knowledge is boundless and his anecdotes are fairly generous too! We found various fossils and all the items found by Paul were divi'd up between the two families.

It really was fantastic value for money and will be an afternoon that we will remember for years to come as a family. If only to remind ourselves of all the years we spent fossil hunting the wrong way, in the wrong places . . . . . !

Paul (from Jurassic Gems in Drakes Way) led our fossil hunting walk on Monmouth beach and he was both an enthusiastic and very knowledgable guide. The group started We in Drakes Way by the shop and then walked down to the beach where Paul showed us some examples of what ee may find and explained just enough about the beach and its rich fossil history. Paul then led us to an area of the beach where we were lot loose to discover our own fossils. We really enjoyed ourselves turning over rocks and exploring rock pools in search of our fossils. Paul was on hand to explain our findings and to help in our discoveries. A really great trip out that we would recommend to anyone.

Paul Crossley who runs fossil hunting walks from his shop 'Jurassic Gems' (formally Mike's Minerals) is superb. He is such a knowledgeable guy and made our trip to Lyme Regis so special, so much so we are going back very soon!!!! His shop, Jurassic Gems run by him and his lovely wife have some fantastic fossils and jewellery. He sells his local finds there too, all at very reasonable prices, much cheaper than anywhere else. I can't stress strongly enough how superb this guy and his shop are. So make sure you visit him in Jurassic Gems No. 7 Drakes Way, this is the best kept secret of Lyme Regis!!!!!!! We arranged our fossil hunting expedition by phone 01297 444405 so easy!

Whilst it was interesting to comb the surrounding beaches it made more sense to look into the several local shops. This shop was very helpful in picking out Local fossils for Grandkids and discussing the Fossil Coast areas. Wide selection of local and fossils from other parts of the world
The town itself is quaint and worth a walkabout. I took a Bus from Wemouth so to see the countryside and that was also a treat with many grass /thatch roofs in the towns

Thank Eugene H
