“A disappointment”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We had Sunday lunch today and it was a disappointment. The cocktails had still not arrived when the starters arrived! The roast lunch was OK but not memorable and expensive. The wine was spilt on the tablecloth when poured with no apollogy given No coffee was offered and so we didn't bother asking. It was as though the staff had no leadership and tried but without direction. The barman had no idea how to make cocktails, admitted it and did not add them to the bill. I felt sad that this hotel had the best location and the possibility to be amazing, but just couldn't make it because of poor management and training. There was not a single manager or maitre d evident during the 3 hours it took to serve lunch!

Room Tip: We only ate here, no room but it was not promising!

I booked a 3 night stay with my mum in October. We had a twin room which, although a little small, had spectular views of the hotel garden and sea. The beds were comfortable with good quality bed linen. The room had everything we needed and the bathroom looked as though it had been refurbished fairly recently. The food at breakfast and dinner was excellent, using mostly locally sourced produce. All of the staff were helpful and friendly. All in all, a good quality, unstuffy hotel. We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Room 5 has large windows with lovely views of the garden and sea.

I stayed for two nights in a single room. The staff were very attentive without being intrusive, polite and personable. The Conservatory was the most perfect venue for a celebratory lunch with family & friends and the food was enjoyed by all. The only slight annoyance was I had to dine alone on the Saturday evening as my family were booked into a self catering cottage and the hotel insisted I took dinner, bed & breakfast for that night. I had a most enjoyable stay & the choice at breakfast was fabulous.

This remains an excellent hotel with great staff and food. If you are looking for a modern hotel with all the latest facilities, this is not it.. It is however an extremely well run establishment in an excellent location, immaculately clean and relaxing. The fact that it is an old building (listed?) inevitably means it has some restrictions e.g. no elevator but, unless such facilities are vital to your stay, it is ideal for just sitting around or energetically exploring the wonderful coastline.

Stayed for 3 nights in mid September as a birthday treat and that is what it turned out to be from the moment we stepped through the door. Lovely room (1), light and bright with great sea views, very clean and serviced twice daily. The staff were friendly and helpful. They came across as really enjoying working at the hotel. It was refreshing to encounter staff taking such a professional pride in their work. We were booked in on a B&B basis but had dinner in the hotel on the on day of arrival. Had a delicious meal with scallops as a starter. Went to Hix reastaurant the following night and again had scallops. In comparison there was no contest...Alexandra chefs won by a mile. Fabulous meal. Keep it up guys/gals.

Room Tip: Go for sea views. Sunrise/set absolutely stunning

We were staying in Lyme Regis and an old friend who was staying at the Alexandra invited us to join her for dinner. Having eaten at Hix the night before and having childhood memories of Seaside Hotel meals we accepted with some trepidation.

Pre dinner drinks were serverd by a charming young waitress who sadly had been given little or no training about the wine list. However her nice smile and willingness to be gently told that while the wine merchant may be English (Berry Brothers) the wine probablywas not.

We were eating rather late and the Dining Room was under a little pressure but our order was taken and we went through a few minutes late.

It was worth waiting. The standard of the food was certainly better than expected. The baked Cornish Hake was excellent and certainly up to Hix standard, however the potatoes had certainly been reheated which slightly spoiled the overall experience.

The staff were a little disorganised but more than compensated with their cheerful manner at the end of what had been a busy Saturday evening.

While it was not pewrfect we would certainly eat there again.
