We decided to go to Lyme Regis for the 'Town Mill' in January. To discover that basically the whole town closes after Christmas until Feb 13th (just in time for Valentines day!)
Thankfully after wandering around for half an hour or so, it was a choice between the Philpot museum or Dinosaurland. Of course we went for Dinosaurland!
As i've been to the Dinosaur museum in Dorchester.. (which is bad!) I had pretty low expectations for Dinosaurland if i'm honest. BUT it was better then i thought it was going to be, better then the Dinosaur museum in Dorchester!!
It's much more up to date than the one in Dorchester and cheaper!! There's also a natural history section. And of course, some not so good dinosaurs placed around the place. I would've liked the dinosaurs to be a little more accessible so we could take silly photos with them.

In my opinion this is the best attraction in Lyme Regis, and very good value. Lots to see, and the items offered in the shop are excellent value compared to the other outlets I visited in the town. The museum is a testament to the dedication, expertise and enthusiasm of its owners.

This museum is a tribute to the undervalued contribution of enthusiasts to enriching our experience and knowledge. The owners set up the place by their own efforts, and keep it running purely with the revenue they generate - ie without public funding or sponsorship. The layout and displays typify the work of the enthusiastic amateur - and that is intended as praise, not criticism, particularly in a world where professionalism, particularly when valued above other attributes, can often bulldoze or bury the sheer love of subject that the true devotee displays.

The museum takes you on a well illustrated and explained trip through millions of years, with countless examples of fossils, clearly labelled and often wittily set out. There's enough detail to appeal to the real anorak, and enough variety to entice the less involved viewer. The displays also link well to Lyme Regis and the local area, so a sense of place is not lost, even set against the aeons of time covered by the displays.

Forget the Tardis - this is a real time machine!

I urge you to visit this gem of a place - and help keep it around for the next few million years.

This is a very well put together museum. There is so much to see and take in and the owners have a sense of humour - find the tank of fish fingers! If like me you do not know much about dinosaurs a visit here will definitely enlighten you.

This is a gem and should not be missed. It is a proper museum and jam packed with fascinating things. It has a lovely balance of fossils, dinosaurs and natural history and I could have spent all day in there as there was so much information to read. The gentleman who was running it was so kind, helpful and knowledgeable and took time to chat with our four year old who switched seamlessly from talking about dinosaurs to hermit crabs and back again!
