Description: The Volunteer Inn is a family-run, seventeenth century pub located in the heart of Lyme Regis in Dorset. One of the only remaining pubs on the high street, The Volunteer sells a range of local ales and ciders and has been a regular in the Good Beer Guide and a CAMRA member for over a decade. Although famous for it's ales, the Volunteer serves excellent food offering a daily changing menu. Please visit our website for more information.

We always drink here when visiting Lyme regis - it is a proper traditional pub with good atmospere and excellent beer and wine. The food is very hit and miss, we have only eaten there twice and both times have had a bit of a dodgy meal. This time we had two crab on toast- unfortunately the topping was the orange roe or coral part of the crab - mixed with a tiny bit of brown crab, there was no white crab meat nor leg meat at all. In amongst the orangy mixture were large bits of shell, and cartillege from the crab. We pointed this out to the barman who said he would tell the chef, we heard nothing further. It is a shame as the place looks like it should be a good gastro pub, but just misses the mark.

We spent some very enjoyable afternoons in this cracking little pub sheltering from the October gloom. Lovely, well kept beer (Proper Job being one of my favourites) friendly staff, excellent background music (there's a rarity!). A gem. We were unlucky not to have been able to eat there - the chef seems to have had an accident the night we were booked in. You can't win them all.

we were very fortunate to be staying in an apartment opposite this great pub, very welcoming atmosphere and well kept ales and ciders. We ate there one night and the food was absolutely divine! The chef there obviously really knows his stuff and I'd really really recommend eating there (actually preferred it to Hix, and that was amazing!) everyone is friendly and there's a cosy bar, or a nicely decorated restaurant area. Do definitely go there as the food is sensational!!

We found this due to a recommendation in our holiday accomodation & were pleased we went. It's tiny, you need to book, but the food is great. It's only a small menu but everything is locally sourced (even the rosemary in the bread is picked in the seafront gardens!). The staff are lovely & the chef happy to chat. Go!!

Compared to some of the bars and pubs in Lyme Regis, this definately has a real pub atmosphere. Cosy and welcoming and full of locals (always a good sign).
We called in for a drink one evening and, tempted by the small but interesting menu, went back for a meal later in the week. We weren't disappointed, as it was delicious.
Wish we'd found this place earlier in our stay as we would have visited more often.
