Like the "hossil funting", the mackerel fishing was something we'd been looking forward to for a long time in advance of our camping holiday in Charmouth. Because we were a large bunch (9 adults, 5 six year olds, 1 four and 1 three), we'd called Harry to arrange things well in advance, and then only had to hope and check that the weather was okay on the day.
Not long after seeing the Marie F and Sunbeam (complete with Jolly Roger) come into the harbour, a nice quick turnaround saw us on board and on our way out. Very excited, we soon had a line each and, with just the right amount of supervision we were carefully feeling for the tell tale tug tug tug tug that means you've got a bite. Everyone hauled in a few beautiful mackerel, and we lost a few at the last moment too, as you need to smoothly haul in and land your fish. Not difficult, though, and all the kids (us big kids included!) had a very genuine and exhilarating sea fishing experience, all the while enjoying taking in the boat, the sun, the good company and the general fun and excitement.
As you can see from the photos, Harry has a following of birds, of course. So it would have been rude not to get some great photos of Harry and one of the braver crew members among us giving them a mackerel taster, straight out of the hand, or even a mackerel head off of the end of one of Harry's fingers (of which there were still 10 when we left him)!
Harry kindly made sure we had sufficient catch for a good lunch before calling ahead to the Beach House Cafe to see whether they were okay to cook up our haul for lunch. Delicious!
The boats are great, mackerel are delicious, and so thanks, Harry & Matt - you are the gentlemen, guides and good fun we hoped you would be.Great stuff!
