“Bliss on a budget”
Reviewed September 22, 2013 via mobile

A Travelzoo voucher was the reason for our visit to this hotel! whilst a few reviews seemed to be less than totally happy with the hotel I for one and the. wife for another one were totally and utterly pleased with the overnight stay. On arrival at the hotel the receptionist was extremely pleasant and efficient in dealing with our booking in and it took less than a minuet to get us booked in and on our way to a nice quiet room, there was a wedding function taking place that evening but the receptionist assured my of a quiet room, and it was perfect. the room was very clean and tidy and the bathroom was outstanding and very modern (never used a square toilet before?) using the shower was an experience on its own! super powerful and super hot.
The bar was very busy with there being a wedding reception taking place, but the service was quite good and the staff very pleasant (my only complaint would be that why oh why do all hotels have to charge so much for soft drinks?)
On arrival at the dining room we were showing to our table by a very delightful young lady, who then took our drinks order and presented us with the evenings menu. being of the Travelzoo option only allowed us a two course meal but we opted for the three course for an extra £5. there was a bit of a wait for the first course to arrive, but as the food is freshly made it was well worthwhile. the service was very good and there was a nice pleasant gap between each course.
An excellent nights sleep on excellent comfortable beds allowed us to wake in the morning both relaxed a looking forward to a full English breakfast, and we were not disappointed! the breakfast was one on the best we have had at busy hotels, again service was good and efficient without being overbearing.
Well done to all the staff for a wonderful nights stay.

This hotel is a hidden gem set within the fantastic Dartmoor landscape. Food is fantastic. Rooms are huge and well equipped. The staff are extremely helpful and VERY polite. Recently had a family wedding here and it simply could not have been better.

Room Tip: Hotel does have one disabled room but access to all areas is not always possible for wheelchair user...

I would describe the Moorland Garden Hotel as average and worthy of the 3 star tripadvisor rating I'm giving it. The hotel is looking somewhat 'tired' in my opinion examples that spring to mind are the peeling wallpaper in the lounge and dated decor in several areas of the hotel (i.e. it needs some investment). On the plus side the food at both breakfast and dinner was of a high standard (although we waited 30 minutes before our order was taken for dinner and then waited a further 35 minutes for the meal as we had not ordered a first course) and our room was very clean. In terms of value we were on the Travelzoo deal so no complaints there. Generally not a bad hotel but have stayed in better for around the same rack rate.

Dear deaf-ears,

Many thanks for your kind and honest review following your recent stay with us. I am pleased to see that you enjoyed the food in the restaurant and found the hotel clean. I do appreciate the reminder that we still have work to do on our refurbishment project, while we have completed a lot of projects in the last two years there is still more to do which is being planned over this winter.

Do come back and see us again, I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised by what you see!

On behalf of our whole family (50 in total) we would like to thank Andrew and his wonderful team for our stay of six nights at the Moorland Garden Hotel. The food, service and accommodation were absolutely excellent. There were family members staying from all over the world and the UK. They were unanimous in their praise of the excellent food and friendliness of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble. The culmination was a celebration meal in the Crystal Room when there were 62 of us. The service was again excellent and the food superb. Andrew was always there to help, whenever needed. For anyone planning a family reunion, the Moorland Garden Hotel is definitely 'The place to be'! Thank you all.

We enjoyed a night away at this delightful spot on Dartmoor with parents. The grounds and surrounding area are wonderful. The bedrooms have recently been refurbished and are now colourful and charming. We had a huge shower in a beautifully presented bathroom. Food was good and not overpriced for an hotel. Breakfast was tasty and well presented with a nice choice from the cold buffet and cooked to order for hot.
We would certainly re-visit.
We did have an excellent value deal from Travel Zoo so not sure what the full rate was

We booked the Moorland Garden Hotel for a 2 night stay via a booking site. Unknown to us, shortly after we made the booking, unknown to us, the manager had been fruitlessly trying to phone to warn us that there was a wedding occurring at the same time as our stay. On arrival, the manager announced that he had placed us in a room at the furthest reaches of the hotel, so that we were not disturbed. As it happened there was a different wedding on both nights we stayed and we were not unduly disturbed. My only comment was that the doors to the rooms required that they had to be slammed in order to be shut properly and being that there is little sound insulation, every time a door was slammed shut in our corridor, we jumped. Luckily this was not constant. I would suggest prospective guests check whether there is a wedding coinciding with their stay. All the same it was nice that the manager showed concern enough to move us to a quite room.

Dear pcgrowler,

Thank you for your kind review following your stay with us earlier this month, I was very pleased to read that we were able to look after you relatively undisturbed by the weddings we were hosting.

I am grateful, too, for the feedback regarding the bedroom doors taking a little more effort to close than normal, I will ask my Maintenance Manager to investigate this as a matter of urgency.

I hope we will be able to look after you both again in the future, do please keep an eye on our website for the best offers available.

Stayed the night after a wedding here at the weekend and really enjoyed the stay. The hotel is in lovely grounds it was just a shame we had to get back home the next day so did not have time to explore.

The bed was so comfy and i wish I stole the pillows! such a nice sleep, quiet rooms despite the wedding going on which is nice especially if you are a guest there whilst a function is going on. Would look to stay here again if in the area and the price was right.

Forgot toothbrush but luckily you get one in the room! breakfast was decent for a buffet style and for no more cost there was an option to order cook to order food such as poached eggs, a nice touch!

Room Tip: We managed to get upgraded so always worth checking the suites are lovely!

Dear AzzaJP

Many thanks for your kind review after your stay here recently, I was very pleased to see that you enjoyed your all too brief visit to the hotel. Yes we do have some lovely grounds, hopefully on another visit you will be able to explore more both on site and around Dartmoor and into Plymouth.

Glad we could help with the toothbrush! This one was part of the suite standard but we do carry spares of almost everything at reception just in case!

We always do our best to give those who need a good nights sleep a quieter room, we are generally able to keep the event guests in the rooms closer to the ballroom so making it better for everyone else. We have made every effort to improve the sleep quality in the hotel so I am especially pleased you found everything so comfortable - and thank you for leaving the pillows behind!

Do keep in touch with us as we do have offers out regularly through the year so do please come and stay again when you are able.
