What a lovely hotel - it ticked all the boxes for a recent overnight stay with a friend plus dog. The staff were excellent - friendly and welcoming, and very keen to make sure we had everything we wanted. The hotel is comfortable, cosy and decorated to a high standard throughout. Our room was on the top floor, looking out over the street. The beds, bedding and towels were all top-notch quality.

We both enjoyed dinner in the restaurant - great local lamb and mussels - and breakfast was just as good. Excellent quality bacon and sausages etc.

The only minor niggle - I realise the restrictions of an old building, but the final staircase up to the second floor is narrow and the stairs have a peculiarly low riser and short tread. We were helped up with our bags because of it. However, I think it could be a bit more of a challenge for those less steady on their pins even without bags, I found it quite perilous walking down with the dog who was keen to be out and about!

Lovely stay, would definitely return.

Room Tip: Top floor may be quieter, but be careful on the staircase. Avoiding looking out over the street wou...

Thank you very much for your review of the hotel. It is a very old building and, as you say, does have some rather challenging stairs! We will always do our best to accommodate guests in rooms that will suit them, so we ask that people phone and discuss any issues they may have when booking. Our nearby Mews building has 8 rooms, 4 or which are on the ground floor and access there is easier and may well be more suitable for some people.
We are glad your dog had a good time too. Dartmoor is such a great area for walking that we always make sure our four-legged friends are well catered for!
We hope to see you again soon.

Fortunately, the heavy rain that I'd passed through on my way to The White Hart had abated as I pulled into the public car park that guests of the hotel are obliged to use. Just as well as the 50 yard walk up the hill to the hotel would have been enough for me to have turned up at the hotel's reception looking one bedraggled article otherwise. But, to be honest, the lack of a car park, (unavoidable for a hotel that has existed in its town centre location since way before the dawn of the motor car) was about the only thing I could fault during my stay. I may have felt a little differently had I found myself in one of the rooms in the "Mews" across the road but, my "superior" room was on the first floor of the main building.

On what was a cold night with frequent intermittent rain, the warm and comfort of The White Hart's bedroom was welcome. Some might find the bed just a little on the soft side but, for me it was just fine.

The room and en-suite appear to have been redecorated in the not-too distant past and it was nice to note that the housekeeping had maintained the post-redecoration standards by keeping even the tricky crevices clean.

Others have remarked on the food and this is where, to my mind, The White Hart really excels. My crab & crevette starter arrived beautifully presented and accompanied with warm breads, tapenade and olives. The meat pie that followed had a delicate pasty case and lashings of rich gravy. The full-English breakfast the following morning was equally delictious; just the thing to set you up for a busy day ahead.

My one word of warning here has nothing to do with the hotel but, its location. If, like me, you're trusting your sat-nav to get you here, if it appears to be wanting to take you down a road no wider than a bridleway, don't take it!!! Some of the country roads are incredibly narrow - and not the somewhere you want to find yourself confronted with an oncoming vehicle. Use your common sense and stick to the "A" roads.

Thank you for taking time to review the hotel and for giving us such a great write up! Our housekeeping staff will be delighted to read your comments and we do work hard on all aspects of presentation at the hotel.
We are building up a strong following in our restaurant and it's great to see your positive comments reinforcing this view, we are glad you enjoyed your meals with us.
Many of the roads in this area are narrow and, while beautiful to look at, they can be challenging and your advice about not always trusting your sat nav is, unfortunately, true! A conventional map is always useful to have to hand when driving, and essential when walking.
As for our Mews building, this is very popular for families, groups and parties as it can be used as a separate self-contained annex with it’s own communal lounge area when required. It also has 4 ground floor bedrooms with easy access which also suits some of our guests.
We hope you will visit us again and that the weather might be somewhat kinder to you then!

We were a party of nine friends meeting for a weekend walking on Dartmoor. The welcome from Karen and her staff was warm, friendly, thoughtful and efficient. Our group was given the pleasant annexe of 8 rooms 20 metres down the road, which we had to ourselves. The standard of accommodation was 1st class, with real attention to details like wonderful bedding, soft towels and even a proper toothmug. The ambiance in the newly refurbished hotel was lovely, with a nice balance between clean modern colour scheme and old Devon wood. The food was good. They certainly know how to cook proper individual pies, or crispy duck, or starters like crispy squid with seschuan noodles, and the real ales and wine we consumed in great quatities were all good. The prices are extremely reasonable, given the quality. Moretonhampstead was very well situated for our days out walking on Dartmoor and is readily accessible to our friends who had travelled down the M5 into Devon. It's a bit of a gem, this place, and we're so glad we found it - with the help of Trip Advisor.

Thank you for your lovely review! It's nice to get a review about our Mews annex – it is a great facility for a group - as you discovered. We are ideally placed for exploring Dartmoor and, as you say, access is good. We do hope you will come and visit us again soon.

I spent a night here recently to break my journey at the start of a visit to Cornwall. What a terrific hotel this is! It is excellent value for money (I believe it's an AA 3 Star establishment). All the staff were charming and helpful. The reception/residents' lounge is delightful and I actually sat in it and read the newspaper after dinner, which is something I never normally do. My room was very nice with a comfortable bed and flat screen TV. The bathroom was functional but fine. There was a bath as well as a shower. The towel rail wasn't switched on and there was no grab rail in the bath, but these are minor gripes.

I ordered a hamburger for dinner and this was very good and plentiful. Breakfast was again functional. The buffet is basic but adequate. The cooked breakfast was delicious and there was just about enough of it to satisfy the appetite. Only one slice of toast was served but that was enough. I suspect the management is being careful not to waste food and money, which is to be expected in these stringent times.

The only downside is the lack of a car park. You have to park your car in the public car park down the road and pay for the privilege. Charges stop at 6 pm but begin again at 9 am the following morning, so you need to remind yourself to go and feed the meter at 9 o'clock or you might get a ticket from an over-zealous car park attendant.

I really enjoyed my stay here and look forward to returning. If you are a light sleeper it might be a good idea to ask for a room at the top of the building as it is old and some of the floorboards squeak.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor of the building if you are a light sleeper.

We decided quite late to have a break on Dartmoor and went on Easter Monday and came back on the Wednesday. We have dogs and the hotel treated them wonderfully - as well as us! We ate in the bar which was cosy and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We didn't actually visit the reception area apart from arrival and departure. The reception was within a lounge and was beautifully decorated and relaxing. Luckily, we had two sunny days on Dartmoor, so although incredibly chilly the skies were blue and dog walking was easy. I am not sure what we would have done if it was very wet. We kept the dogs in a crate overnight in our hotel room which was very spacious and we had chocolates on our pillow the first night. We stayed in room number 1 and it was very quiet. The bath was simply gorgeous! The meals were good value and very good quality. Mortonhampstead catered well for your needs with a Co-op, tea rooms, galleries and potteries etc. Very accessible to the moor. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it.

If you are looking for a country Inn in a beautiful location where service is paramount and accomodation is comfortable - this is it! The recently refurbished White Hart combines the traditional qualities of an historic property with attentive service and newly refurbished rooms. The hotel has come through a difficult period with a change in ownership, has been improved and renovated and the staff are motivated and really rising to the challenge of providing a product that is both distinctive and of high quality. We would definitely stay here again. This hotel is on the up and up.

We stayed at the White Hart on Wednesday 27th March, the staff were very friendly and good at their job, our room was very good the bed was the best I have sleeped in other than my own. The dinner was very good and a good Menu.
So I would recomend this hotel over any one of the 4/5 star hotels.
