“Can't fault the host or location!”
Reviewed June 28, 2014

We received an extremely warm welcome, you get the impression that nothing is too much trouble - and all for a third/half less than the other 2 B&Bs we'd stayed at in the previous week in Cornwall.
Towels and bed linen were clean, breakfast was big and included lovely fresh tomatoes on the vine (and perfect fried bread!), we had a TV in the room, a lovely view over the garden and I slept very well.
The walk into moretonhampstead, with it's surprisingly good pub/restaurants and very friendly locals is a mere 2/3 minute stroll, and the beautiful Moors are within walking distance too.
The one and only reason I couldn't give 5 stars was because of the sort of old smoke/musty smell downstairs. 5 minutes with the window open in the room got rid of the traces upstairs, but I think maybe if they were a little more careful about where they smoked in their own parts of the house it would help greatly. If it's not smoke, then maybe a good steam clean of the carpets or something would do it? I'm not sure. I just think this may be colouring some people's first impressions of what is, essentially, a well run, welcoming and traditional B&B.
Oh, there was lots of parking too!

Room Tip: We had room 7 which was spacious and had a nice view over the garden, and a small shower ensuite.

We arrived without prebooking and were offered a choice of rooms at a very reasonable cost. Yes the accommodation is dated and tired looking. However the bed was spotlessly clean and the towels snowy white. The owner was lovely and very helpful. Breakfast was good and beautifully presented fresh fruit was served after the cereal whilst we waited for the main course. Barry also offered to launder both my husband and his co cyclists clothes at no extra charge, (they are cycling from Lands end to John O'Groats as I write this .)
Overall wouldn't stay more than 1 night but the good outweighed the not so good.

Room Tip: Ask if it's possible to see alternative rooms. Ensuite definitely worth the extra money.

This is a big old house ran by what appears to be a guy by himself. The house is worn around the edges and is slightly musty however the room as big and the bed was clean, tidy and super comfy. If you are looking for a fully modern perfect room this isn’t the place for you however the landlord was a lovely chap who upgraded us to an en-suite as it was quiet even though we only paid for the shared bathroom room rate. The owner showed us in and then left us to our own devises but he could be contact by a bell just outside the room. We also got to choose whatever time we wanted breakfast. It was more of a “fry up” than an English breakfast. Not to my liking but it was still good homemade food. With plenty of coffee, cereals, toast and juices. Also ample parking. A bargain room that was only 2 minute’s walk into to the village where there was 4 pubs to choose from for dinner.

We booked online and sadly didn't check out the Trip Advisor revues. That will teach us !!
We arrived very late at night (but had telephoned and warned the proprietor)
We were using the b&b as a base whilst visiting my Sister in Teignmouth and as they are advertising this as being Newton Abbott, we thought that it would be only a short drive away.
Don't be fooled.....they are 20 miles away from Newton Abbott !!
We were put in room number 6...which I can only describe as being worse than basic !
A double room with no working bedside lights or working light above the sink. Not one drawer in the entire bedroom to put your belongings into and just a shelf screwed to the wall...instead of a bedside table.
The curtains were hanging off the rail and the dated woodchip wallpaper was blown and damp in several places. There was also no headboard to the bed...just nasty greasy stains on the wallpaper, where people had rubbed their heads on it.
The smallest tv in the world was plonked onto a very grubby wooden table...however they had provided tea and coffee making facilities (which we never used as were unsure of their cleanliness)
After washing my hair, I soon realised that the only plug to use for my hairdryer, was situated about 10 feet away from the only mirror in the room (above the sink) as there was no dressing table.
The standards of cleanliness left a lot to be desired in both the bedroom and the shared toilet and bathroom...next door !
Cobwebs hanging off the walls, with very dirty skirting boards and a very dated bathroom with no shower...just an old bath and washbasin.
The toilet was situated next door which was also dirty and had a clear window in it...so the whole street could see you in there !!
We had to ask if there was a shower and told it was downstairs. I went to have a shower and OMG it was even more disgusting. The mirror above the sink looked like it had never been cleaned and the shower cubicle door was grubby to say the least. There was no heating on and nowhere to put your clothes apart from on a filthy radiator cover...which had dead flies on it. A cold tiled floor is also not ideal in a shower room with no heating !
We spoke to another couple who were at breakfast who had complained about the room...as they had been shown this first and got moved to a nicer room downstairs. However, as it was Bank Holiday...they were quite busy and we didn't bother to ask to be moved.
I expressed my feeling to the owner upon leaving and was told that they don't normally rent this room out...but he couldn't provide an answer when asked why he had rented it out to us and had tried to do so to the other couple !
In the 21st Century...it really shouldn't matter how much or how little you have spent on a room for the night. Basic cleanliness doesn't cost much.
This "Country Guest House" as they laughingly call themselves desperately needs a visit from Alex Polizzi (The Hotel Inspector)

We really were not sure what to expect as we were just stopping over on the way to Cornwall however we were put up in a huge room, twice the size of the room we paid twice as much for in Cornwall.

It is also in a great location and we went to explore a little in the morning before we left just after breakfast.

My wife who was a sous chef at a Michelin Star Restaurant and is now a Head Chef in the City thought the breakfast was fantastic so well done to Barry for all his hard work. We also arrived quite late at about 10.45 which he was brilliant about.

Barry is a brilliant host, super friendly, even provided sausages for our dogs breakfast ,:).our breakfast was lovely and filling, yes, the hotel could do with a bit of a tidy up,but Barry is doing ALL the work himself, sorting the rooms, cleaning, cooking and serving breakfast, hes human like the rest of us,and does a remarkable job, hes really lovely and friendly, the bedding was very clean, what more do you need,!!!! Id rather have a SLIGHTLY untidy room, with clean bedding, and a brilliant host, than a superclean hotel and unfriendly staff, the furniture in our room was old fashioned, but to be perfectly honest, it felt in keeping with the age of the building, the view from our four poster room was lovely,
You also have to remember this is a very old building, and dust accumulates quickly, we live in an old house ourselves, and you can dust in the morning, and by evening it looks like its not been done, so please remember this,if you go here, Barry is certainly NOT lazy, he didnt stop the whole time we were there, and the phone was constantly ringing for bookings, and other things, and as said before, hes trying to do everything himself,so if a room isnt scrubbed within an inch of its life ,so what, the bedding is very clean, no rips in it,which is the MOST important thing in the room, not a little bit of dust, !!! and at £60 for a four poster room, with an amazing view, and good quality full english breakfast,in Dartmoor,we thought it was excellent value for money, thanks Barry, youre a wonderful man, take care

Stayed on 22nd August 2013 for two nights. The room was very large and Barry is an excellent host. Thank you for keeping up with my 2 yr old twins. The breakfast was good and the location is very strategic to access beaches around the region. Would definitely come back.
