Driving from Bournemouth to Plymouth earlier this week and looking for a nice country pub to stop at for dinner I decided to stop in Honiton. Used Trip Advisor to find somewhere and ended up at the holt. It was pretty busy but I got a table in the bar and both dishes I had were really nice, it's not your usual cheap pub food and worth the money. The barman was really friendly too. Would definitely recommend anyone that stops here to give it a try.

After visiting this place again with the in=laws, I am still impressed. The pub has a selection of great Otter Ales in a modern environment, but it is not really about the beer. The menu is simple and not particularly extensive. However it is extremely well thought-out and crafted and there is always something that appeals. For example the attention to detail with the North African inspired rump of lamb that I chose was great to see. Not only was it cooked as requested, it cam with a mini shredded lamb pastilla, spinach and chorizo eggah and Moroccan spicing. My companions meals were also excellent.

The started and puddings are also limited in number to about 6 or so dishes, but again display the same careful selection and delivery.

Basically they seem to be getting it right, not only with the food as the atmosphere is good and the staff friendly and courteous, but with a good sense of humour. I could easily make a visit to The Holt a habit!

Met a friend here who had heard 'good things' about the Holt but we both don't hold our breath about pubs until we have personally tried them...can be so hit and miss which proved to be the case here.

Owned by the Otter Brewery and sadly turned into a Gastro pub, very clinical and spartan not helped by the fact that there were only two other people in the bar the entire lunchtime.

We decided to try the rare roast beef sandwiches as advertised on a blackboard which seemed ideal to mop up our beer.

What actually arrived were two rolls with not a lot of beef between and not 'rare', however we are both of the same opinion that if one actually gets something edible on your plate it's worth shouting about otherwise grin and bare it!

Sadly these 'sandrolls' were rock hard and we struggled to actually cut through the bottom half which we left...should have just walked over to the chef who was in his 'theatre' kitchen and asked him for his opinion as to the very hard rolls and why were they being advertised as a sandwich but oh for the easy life!

On the plus side, 5 real ales on, all Otter but well kept. The salad garnish on the plate was probably one of the best i have had...but for £7.95 it should have been, the pub is dog friendly and the staff very polite and pleasant and obviously do not attract the somewhat dubious trade that Honiton can be known for.

We might be back as the Holt is a convenient place to meet but will avoid the 'sandrolls' next time.

If you find your self in Honiton – you will find your self in The Holt. It is owned by the same people that brew the local Otter Beer (just try the divine Otter head – seriously at 6% thi is the beer of the gods !). However it is the food that is superb. You have to book a table in advance as people do flock to this place. However when upstairs in the restaurant you don’t get a sense of the crowds below. The food is local and very good (I wouldn’t say excellent). We did have some points fr debate – for example the fish pie was not a pie but bits of fish in a sauce. But all in all it was a very satisfactory dining experience and one that I would recommend to others.

The Holt delivers a superb experience both for its dining and drinking facilities. The staff went out of their way to ensure we were satisfied and were very friendly to myself and my family. The beer is excellent and has a good idea of offering a taster rack where you can sample thirds of the excellent Otter beers. The food was delicious, a seared devon sirloin steak that will be hard to beat. Cannot recommend this pub enough, and cannot wait to go back again.
