“Luxury self catering in north Cornwall”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2012

Really one of the best self catering cottages ever. Great location, well appointed and maintained and very peaceful. The owners do an excellent job of making you feel welcome when you arrive and are available if you have any problems. We stayed in the Courtyard, which sleeps 8 and has everything you need to make your stay very comfortable. I actually debated putting this review on trip advisor, as I wouldn't want Rooke to get too popular!

As a family we have been coming here for the best part of 18 years. Stayed in Meadow cottage which is furnished to a high standard and has lovely views over the surrounding countryside. It has a beautiful walled garden with a sand pit which our toddler adores. Rob and Jill are great hosts and make us feel very welcome every time. Couldn't recommend more highly

Six of us stayed here during the second week in August (a family of four plus dog, including 2 girls aged 9 and 6 and a cocker spaniel, and one set of grandparents in their 60s). It is the most wonderful spot - feeling remote and peaceful but not too far from the convenience of the Wadebridge Tesco and the wealth of things to see and do in the North Cornwall area.
We stayed in the Farmhouse which accommodates 7. The downstairs rooms are large and beautifully decorated with big comfy sofas, enough for all of us to sit comfortably and make use of the TV/WiFi/DVD player or just to sit and read. The kitchen is really well equipped with the most wonderful fridge dispensing cold water and crushed ice which meant that the children were drinking a lot more water than normal!
The bedrooms are beautiful, beds and bedding very comfy and black-out blinds behind the curtains in all rooms means the sun beaming in doesn't mean a premature awakening.
The garden is huge and was a really unexpected bonus for us. There is a vast lawn with garden furniture and trees and pampas for dogs and children to run round and hide behind. There is also a gate which leads to the children's play area with swings, see-saw, sand pit and balance beams - all very safe and well-kept.
The owners Rob and Gill are on site (in fact live in the property connected to the Farmhouse holiday cottage) and are perfect friendly holiday hosts, providing milk and a very tasty and welcome lemon drizzle cake for our arrival. They are there if you need something or want to ask for recommendations or advice, but otherwise you wouldn't notice their proximity. We broke a glass and popped next door to let them know and Rob couldn't have been more relaxed about it - just replaced the glass.
The local pub does really excellent food though does not allow dogs inside. Likewise other local pubs (eg St Kew Inn) does not allow children and dogs in the same place in the building (usually no children in the bar, no dogs in the restaurant) so if you are coming to the area with children and dog it may be good to look up a few places in advance which do allow both children and dogs in case like in our case the weather is not always ideal for sitting outside.
The weather during our week's holiday was rather mixed, with several rainy days, but because of the wonderful accommodation this did not spoil the holiday at all as it was a real pleasure to stay in the spacious cottage and really relax. Perfect.

We had friends over from Australia and took them to Cornwall and a stay at Rooke Country Cottages.
We have stayed a number of times before and knew the standards would be excellent.
On this occasion we were in the Courtyard. A large cottage of high quality. Probably some of the best self catering accommodation available in Cornwall. The bedrooms are generous in size, all have flat screen tv's and extermely comfortable beds.
The views from Courtyard and wonderful, and be the cottage benefits from a large deck that over looks the rolling countryside. Also a great place for sundowners in the evening.
The stay was even better due to the weather. Whilst it was cloudy and raining in London we were bathed in sunshine in Chaple Amble.
We walked the rumps, did Port Issac and Doc Martin, lunched at the Port William at Trebarwith Strand, and ate in the evening at the St Kew Pub. The quality of food in Cornwall is getting better, and we felt that there had been an improvement over the last couple of years.
We will certainly be returning to Rooke Country Cottages, and would highly recommend a stay.

Booked the Honeysuckle cottage for a week. On arrival we were greeted by the owner who gave us a quick tour of the cottage. Even provided milk in the fridge and a full Cornish cream tea to start off on the right foot. The cottage only sleeps 2 but was generously sized with a great range of facilities such as 2 TV's DVD player and DAB radio. Everything was very clean and the bed was comfortable. one nice touch was the CCTV feed from the barn of a pair of Barn Owls must admit did start to 'flick' just to check they were not out in the continuous downpour we experienced.Overall a well run and presented venue very handy for all Cornish attractions. Only negative was the village pub which was expensive for what was served and having to eat sat on a settle was just off putting. Would venture further afield to eat.

The cottages at Rooke Farm are well-kept and comfortable. The location is great for access to excellent surfing beaches on both sides of the Camel estuary. The equipment in the drying room for borrowing is useful eg. windbreaks and beach toys. The beds are extremely comfortable. The kitchen has sufficient equipment for each guests, but you wouldn't say well-equipped - there is one mug for each person, for example, which is a faff. The children's playground is great. We stayed for two weeks, and it is worth noting that when you do that, your cottage is not cleaned on the middle Saturday - no sensible reason was offered for this. As we had paid £3,300 to be there, this was a little galling, as you can imagine. I would recommend this property however - overall, it is good quality.

Rooke cottages are situated just outside the very small village of Chapel Amble. The village itself has a post office, a pottery and a pub - more like a restaurant. Unlike many parts of Cornwall however, the cottages are easy to get to, if you pick your route you can get there without any single track road except for the last little bit.
The cottages themselves are on a farm but not the sort of farm with wandering cattle or dirt. There is an owl cam in an old barn which was very popular with my 4 teenage guests. We did see the owl via the TV in our cottage.
We had Meadow cottage which is for 6 people and the space was fine. We also had a small dog in our party who was catered for by a fenced/walled garden which also had sunloungers, a bbq, table and chairs and a sand pit for small children.
In side the cottage was up to date and the kitchen, TV nad Hifi all equipped with modern appliances. The decor and furniture was all neutral and the carpet looked pretty new. The beds were comfortable and the linen and towels all good quality. There were nice touches - dishwasher powder, washing up liquid and a mid week clean. The TV had a big pile of DVD's and there were board games in the living room.
A big plus was the wash and drying room for the wet suits which is open to all on site. There was also a large supply of wind breaks, body boards, outdoor coats and boots to be borrowed.
My only negative comment would be the lack of anywhere to walk to in the village. The pub is really a restaurant charging restaurant prices, although the food is very good.
I have tried to book these cottages before and found them full during the summer, the visitors book tells a story, lots of repeat bookings. I would certainly book again.
