“A well-run and well-placed b&b in North Berwick”
Reviewed October 28, 2011

I was one of a group of golfers who took over the whole place for three nights. First, it is well-placed - the High Street is a few paces away, North Berwick Golf Club is a moderate walk away and there is an excellent pub, the Ship, just over the road and it has a good selection of real ales.

My single room was small, but it was at the back of the hotel and was quiet. Karolina looked after us very well indeed and there was a good choice of food for breakfast.

This is a "sister" hotel to the Nether Abbey Hotel, which is my favourite place to stay in the whole of the UK, so although I knew it was a low key, B&B sort of place, I was still expecting an exceptional place. I didn't like it one little bit, I am afraid. The room was ill thought out (there was only one chair in a double room, and the TV has to be viewed through the vertical bars of the bed's foot-piece - there's no place in the bathroom to put a bag of toiletries, the windows were filthy and wouldn't open, there was only two tea bags and not one biscuit). As you walk across the dining room, you stick to the floor, the balustrade up to the bedrooms is similarly sticky with dirt, etc. Dark brown is the favourite colour of the designer it would seem - I felt in a 60s time warp. Other guests' activity is clearly audible - early morning ablutions carry throughout the place, the church's metallic chiming of each hour could be either charming or quite a disturbance through the night, depending on how lightly you sleep. Nope, didn't like it at all. Not cheap either. The manageress is ... distracted and too busy.

Stayed overnight whilst attending a function in North Berwick. Large spacious room, beautifully furnished. Prompt service when shown to room. Freshly cooked breakfast with Sunday papers available. Would recommend.

One of the nicest hotel stays I have experienced. The spotless room was bright, roomy, nicely decorated, and very spacious. The modern dining area and the smiling efficient staff contributed to a pleasant dining experience and the full Scottish breakfasts are to be recommended.

Room Tip: Ideally located for the nearby real ale pubs.

This hotel doesn't have great curb appeal, apart from its Bistro, you might not know this was an 11 room establishment. However once inside, the place has quite a contemporary feel, despite being home to the number of guest house type establishments over the years. Staff very helpful and friendly. One down side might be for those less able for stairs - dont think there was a lift and the top of the house rooms are 3 floors up. Back rooms with views out to the Bass Rock, but a bit of a climb (to the rooms, not the Rock!). Very central in the town and private car parking at the rear of the hotel. Good value 3* establishment and worth a visit.
