“Not as nice as it looks”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2007

We stayed at The Marine in May 2007 and were not impressed. When we were checking in the staff was very rude and not welcoming. When we got to our room it was about the size of a large walk-in closet. If you book online make sure you get the same room you thought you were booking online because we did not. The bath tub had hair left in it from the previous guests, which was not very pleasant. The location is nice but the hotel staff doesn't seem very welcoming of any guests who are younger which makes for an uncomfortable stay. I stayed at this hotel many years ago and completely fell in love with it. I was sadden to see that since it has been bought by MacDonald and remodeled the staff has now become so unpleasant to guests who don't fit "the typical guest" image that they are used to. We will not stay there again.

My husband and I were lucky enough to have this trip bought for us as birthday gifts. My husband to go fishing and for me to have a 'spa day'. We have both had a really good trip. The hotel is in a beautiful situation with stunning views over the sea and the golf course. Unfortunately, our room did not overlook the sea but the lounges have full length windows and makes a very pleasant place to sit and read a book or magazine. The staff were all very polite and helpful.
There had been a slight problem with the treatments booked in the spa, but Cathy admitted that she had made a mistake and ensured that we were catered for and that all of our treatments could be accommodated. All the girls in the spa were pleasant and helpful. The lounge, thermal spa and pool were great.
Strange to say, but this hotel has really lovely curtains and colour schemes, which makes such a pleasant change from the usual hotel style.
All in all, I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. I'm sure that it was quite pricey but worth it for a special treat.

I arranged a last minute deal at this hotel albeit the price we paid wasn't exactly bargain of the year!

The hotel looks onto a golf course with views onto the sea. Just make sure you ask for a room with this view otherwise you'll be looking onto a street.

We had an executive double room which was nicely decorated, clean with a good sized bathroom.

My only complaint with the room was that as it was situated near a staircase so every time someone opened the fire door at the top of the stairs we had to put up with the door banging shut. I did mention this to the receptionist but she really wasn't interested!

We didn't eat at the hotel and if the drinks prices were anything to go by I'm glad we didn't! £3.95 for a cup of tea!! Come on!

Breakfast was OK but nothing special.

Overall, it's a nice, clean hotel but I don't think it was worth the money we paid. It also lacked a bit of atmosphere .

Stayed here one night in november 06. Hotel is nice and relaxing, nice spa. We lunched in the hotel and food was very good but evening menu was rather limited, thus ate out in the evening. Breakfast was grand! Room was very comfortable and spotless, although room small-ish. Front sea view overlooking golf course gave nice outlook. Definately worth a stay if your in North Berwick.
