“Great value and wonderful staff!”
Reviewed March 16, 2014

This is a lovely hotel which is much better than other much more expensive hotels in the area! We stayed for one night with our dog and the staff couldn't of been more lovely. We had a really good evening meal and the breakfast was exceptional. (They even put out an extra sausage for a dog....which we didn't ask for!) If we ever return to Norfolk we will defiantly be back!

Decided to come here from Groupon Offer for Afternoon Tea. What an offer afternoon tea for four for £18. We were not disappointed, a wonderful spread (even with a last minute request). Lovely fresh sandwiches, delicious cakes and warm fabulous scones. Hope that the success of this offer means that afternoon tea will be available from now on. We stayed for drinks after and staff were friendly and helpful, with a lovely log burner (so nice and warm). We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Make sure you pop to the loos to,see the door handles!!!

We arrived on Friday afternoon and were checked in immediately and shown to our room. It was Room 8 - a deluxe room on the top floor with wonderful views out towards the church and fields beyond. The room was large and beautifully furnished with very comfortable chairs, cushions and throws. The complimentary beverage tray featured quality products, including fresh milk, several varieties of Novus tea and Blue Mountain blend cafetiere coffee, plus bottled water and homemade flapjacks. What more could you ask for? We had taken our Border Terrier with us and there was a plush dog bed, towel and biscuits all waiting for her! We all felt at home and chilled out immediately.

The hotel has free WiFI throughout and our room had plenty of sockets, which came in handy for charging up our phones etc. The hotel was spotlessly clean in all areas and has a really relaxing vibe.

The staff at the hotel are a real asset. Everyone we came into contact with was friendly, professional and couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was quite simply amazing. There was a large choice of fresh pastries, fresh fruit salad, cereals etc. to start with which was followed by the best full English breakfast my husband and I have ever had in a hotel. There's a choice of eggs, which were perfectly cooked on both occasions. If you don't fancy a full English there are numerous other options available but the full English was delicious.

There was plenty of parking available outside the hotel and around The Buttlands, but this area does get very busy in the summer months. From the hotel it's a two minute walk to the top of Staithe Street, which is a pretty street full of cafes, unique shops and a very good bakery. Carry on to the end and you come to the quay and harbour area with spectacular views out towards the sea. From the quay it's about a 15 minute walk along the sea defences to the beach and lifeboat station, with beautiful scenery in all directions as you walk. Just before the beach there's a great dog-friendly Beach Cafe, toilets and a large pay and display car park if you're taking the car.

The weather was glorious during our stay so we walked along the beach to the stunning Holkham Beach, which is about two miles. Just a note about the tides along this part of the North Norfolk coast - they can take you by surprise, so be sure to check out the times of the high tides if you plan to walk along the beach.

We rounded off the day eating delicious fish and chips al fresco from one of the two excellent fish and chip shops on the harbour front.

All in all a memorable stay in a beautiful part of Norfolk. We can't wait to return and wouldn't stay anywhere else but The Crown.

We had a great stay, it was our second visit so we already knew the service in the hotel was good. We treated both of our parents to the weekend away as a belated Christmas present, which they really enjoyed too.
The service the manager provides is excellent, she is highly organized, professional & shows warmth and compassion @ all times.
Food was excellent, we had dinner on our first night within the hotel the second night we went out but we all agreed the food & service was superior @ the hotel -Kelly (the manager) really made our visit ! She's a lovely girl, real asset to the hotel they need to hang on to her.

We spent a Sunday night at The Crown Hotel and were able to take advantage of their Sunday Night special offer. We had a deluxe room for only £90 when eating in the restaurant. We had room 10 which overlooked the main square. The hotel was quiet at this time of the year so we had no problem finding parking and we had no noise from outside. The windows are only single glazed and I'm sure it can get noisy outside on busy nights. Our room was spacious, with a comfortable bed and pillows and a large bathroom. However, the water pressure wasn't that great when using the handheld shower and the sink drained very slowly. The wastebasket under the sink was not emptied from the previous guest. No connection problems with the free wi-fi, strong fast signal. There was a nice selection of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and cookies and there was no charge for the large bottle of still water (Hildon). The hotel also serves complimentary tea and scones to guests between 4 and 5pm. You have the option of getting them brought to your room or have them in the bar. The bar area was very nice and we found a cosy corner with a comfy leather sofa so we had our scones there. It was a great way to relax after check-in, which was at 3pm. The scones were delicious as they were freshly baked.

We were celebrating my husband's birthday and we had a wonderful meal in the dining room. Very nice wine list. The oysters were amazing. In fact, everything we ordered (starters, mains, desserts) was excellent, although my haddock goujons could have used a few seconds more in the fryer (not crispy enough). However, the quality of the fish and meat was superior. Service was excellent throughout and we could charge our meal to the room and pay upon check out. We asked if the gratuity would be included at check-out and it wasn't so we made sure to leave a tip before we left. This is probably not the best system as I'm sure many guests don't think to ask and assume the gratuity would be included. Then it's easy to forget when checking out.

Breakfast was again in the dining room. I think it would have been nicer in the bright and cheerful orangery but perhaps this is only used at certain times. The continental / buffet choices were limited but the list of cooked items was impressive. We had brioche with banana, maple syrup and bacon. Beautiful comfort food! Music was much better in the morning (chilled out but lively.... reggae, etc). Dinner music started off as loud dance music and we asked to turn it down. It was replaced with dreary, middle-of-the-road stuff. One extreme to another.

A minor criticism is that at times, service doesn't seem organised and the little things are overlooked. For example, we almost gave up even making a reservation as the website's booking system doesn't make it clear about the Sunday Night special rate and you can't indicate your room preference (we wanted to be sure we didn't get a dog-friendly room). So when we tried calling several times on an early Friday afternoon, there was no answer and it wasn't convenient for us to leave a message. When we did finally get through, we were put on hold for 10-15 minutes. We made the booking and were told that we would get a confirmation email. I became concerned when I hadn't heard back so two days later I emailed them and requested written confirmation. I got a reply the following day. I mentioned in the email that it would be my husband's birthday but no acknowledgement of this was made in the email or during our stay. Not necessary but it would have been nice to have a little note or comment. Check in is a bit confusing as you have to get staff's attention at the bar. Check in was friendly but no mention of breakfast times, wi-fi access, dinner location. I had to ask. She didn't know if breakfast was included in our rate and where we would be having dinner (dining room or orangery). When we arrived at our reservation time for dinner, the chap behind the bar didn't know which table was ours. He just told us to go right in the empty dining room and choose, then came back and specified our table. It would have been nice to be greeted by dining room staff and shown to our table but perhaps this didn't happen as we were the first to arrive. I think things got better for the other diners who arrived after us as there was a dedicated server on hand (a very nice and professional young lady).

We were shown to our room when we checked in, which was nice. Check out was friendly and efficient and we were even given some tips on places to visit in the area.

Although there is slight room for improvement in terms of organisation, this has not deterred us from visiting again and recommending The Crown Hotel to others. We had a relaxing stay and enjoyed some truly outstanding food.

We decided to go to Norfolk with our two boys aged 3and 5 for a couple of days over half term. A friend recommended this hotel and we had a brilliant time. We stayed in a family room, no 8, which we all loved. It had recently been refurbished and was very comfortable and perfect for us. The boys loved snuggling up on the sofa bed in the seperate second bedroom.

The staff couldn't have been more accommodating. It was family friendly without being too kiddy! The boys had dinner with us the first night and on the second night had high tea at 6, we put them to bed and popped down to have drinks and a fantastic dinner with the baby monitor! The food was top notch, the second night we decided to have the beef to share which was divine!

We are definitely going to return as it was a perfect base for exploring nearby Holkham, Burnham Market, Holt etc. we had a great morning seal watching and spent the afternoon crabbing which was highly addictive!

Room Tip: The family rooms are no 1 and 8. No 8 is more quirky and No 1 a bit larger having a bunk and single...

We are very proud of the newly renovated Room 8 and we are so pleased that your family enjoyed the experience. Our Head chef and Front of House team are very proud of the menu and are standard but yes the Beef is delicious and we are proud serving Arthur Howells meat. We look forward to welcoming you back for many more family memories.
