Owner description: Please bear in mind our opening hours are limited: 10am - 3pm Saturdays Easter to November & Tuesdays in Norfolk school holidays. Museum visits at other times by prior arrangement, subject to availability - we are a volunteer run organisation. For 9 years from 1968 Thetford, Norfolk became Walmington on Sea - home of Dad's Army. A guided location tour was launched in 2004 and proved so popular that a museum was founded in 2007. Housed in the Old Fire Station to the rear of the Guildhall - the building itself featured in several episodes as Walmington on Sea Town Hall - it is independently run by an enthusiastic platoon of volunteers. Over the years the museum has developed and expanded to include a 1940s inspired Marigold Tea Rooms. In 2010 a full size bronze statue of Captain Mainwaring was unveiled in the town by David Croft and in 2012 the original Jones's butcher's van returned home and is now residing with our good friends at Charles Burrell Museum, just a short walk away.

Visiting the museum was like going back to my childhood watching Dad's Army on the Telly. It allowed us to educate our children on what it was like living in the UK during WWII. Really fun day out!

Staffed by very friendly Volunteers this museum is small but filled to the brim with memorabillia and interesting snippets of information about the Dads Army Series. You can also have your Picture taken in The Vicars Office. A tearoom and nice gift area too. Donate some money to help keep this gem open and Help to pay for Jones the butchers van stored at a nearby museum a short walk away.

a good couple of hours can be spent here- check the opening hours so as not to be disappointed

Why haven't you been to the Dad's Army Museum? "Stupid Boy!

This is a free museum and pays homage to Dad's army, there were 80 episodes, how many have you seen? They were filmed in Thetford and some extras have shared their memories with us. The volunteers are fantastic and love talking about the show, the museum, the home guard and any related topics. In the winter Jones's van is exhibited outside the museum, it is incredible that it survived and even has it's own story - all you have to do is ask.

Fraser always said "We're Doomed" but thanks to the volunteers we're not!

Had a guided tour of Thetford yesterday, taking in the locations used in the filming of the TV series Dads Army. The tour guide, Rod was humerous, knowledgeable, friendly and polite. His enthusiasm for the history of Thetford was infectious. The fact that he was an unpaid voulanteer, as are all the other staff at the museum, is a credit to the town.

I recommend the museum and the tour as inexpensive family entertainment suitable for all ages. It makes a trip to Thetford worthwhile!
