“Worth a look”
Reviewed January 12, 2012

There's not a great deal there, but definitely worth a look if you're in the area and very reasonable entrance fee

“Kids run free”
Reviewed December 23, 2011

The kids had a great time playing hide and seek and chase. The steep moat boundary provided them with a place to run free. EH members so great for regular short visits when in Kings Lynn.

“A wealth of history as you enter Norfolk”
Reviewed November 19, 2011

Castle Rising is about ten minutes away from where we live. It is an English Heritage property and a fine example of a medieval castle. Castle Rising is an attractive village historically important since this was the earlier port before river changes favoured nearby King's Lynn. Easily visited off the A149.
Years ago, when we lived in Sheffield but had holidays in Norfolk, this was a great place to take a break after a very dull drive down the A17. There is a large car park and loos that you can use without even going into the Castle. However, we strongly recommend that you do - check out the website for opening times. Particularly recommended (again visit their website) are the historical recreations held at certain times during the year. Volunteers dress up in period costume and bring the property to life demonstrating the crafts/sports/warfare that took place about a thousand years ago. Kids will love having a go at the archery and military marching. You may even get lucky and experience the noise and smell of cannon fire.
Try for one of these weekends but if you can't do that, take a break here on your way to North Norfolk, visit the castle and the church and learn a lot about this area's history. Your challenge - find out why a number of local women will regularly dress up in what appears to be witches outfits (but aren't) in the village.

“Castle Rising - step into history”
Reviewed November 12, 2011

Breathtaking at first sight, yet worth repeated visits. All the castle and its mound can be explored inside and out, and there is an information centre and gift shop too. Excellent tea rooms in the village as well, with home baked pastries and cakes.
