My wife and I have recently spent three nights at this delightful hotel. From the moment we drove up and saw the Hall and its well cared for gardens we knew this was something special, and so it turned out. We were warmly welcomed at reception and shown to our superb room, a garden room in the new part of the hotel with its own patio overlooking the gardens to the rear of the hotel. All facilities were explained and also an invitation to use the spa and pool , reserved for guests (which was wonderfull ). The room was beautifully furnished with a super king bed,and lovely bathroom with superb quality towels and robes.
Dinner at this hotel is not just dinner, it should be treated as a dining experience, the dishes that these talented chefs prepare are better than some Michelin restaurants, I just wish we had stayed longer to sample the complete menu. There is also a very well selected wine list. The food service staff, although young, are so delightful and enthusiastic and will try to cater for any special requests. Breakfasts are just as good with great local produce used and cooked to order.
There is a lovely comfortable lounge in which to take coffee after dinner and relax in, with that real country house feel to it.
The attention to detail at Congham amazed me, even to finding a little card on my car when checking out saying that 'happiness is a clean windscreen' yes someone had cleaned the screen!
My wife and I would just like to say a BIG thank you to Caroline and all the girls and boys for providing us with a memorable stay at what has to be one of the best country house hotels in the country.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are very quiet.

Beautiful setting, lovely herb garden and general surrounds, obviously once a great house; but on our visit a bit world worn and tired. The service night one and the next morning was appalling, in fairness it picked up the second afternoon and evening but only after our friends, who have been visiting for twenty years, had quite a lot to say. The food quality and serving sizes improved so much from night one to night two that is was hard to believe it was the same chef but we were assured that it was. The place needs work, a lot of restoration and some good staff training and attention to detail on the little things, like polishing the silver and vaccuming the carpets in the dining room after each meal. Nice spa and great treatment list but the new owner has a lot of work to do all round.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are nice, roomy and bright; but they lack decent curtains to give you some privacy during the day.

Julie W, General Manager at Congham Hall Hotel & Spa, responded to this reviewResponded June 18, 2012

It is invaluable to receive constructive criticism from guests who genuinely want to help and encourage us to be better.

We have exciting plans for refurbishing those parts of the hotel that have been too long neglected, meanwhile, it is always difficult to strike the right balance between offering value for money, considering the quality of the furnishings and not cheapening the overall proposition. Since the new owners took over, we have reduced the tariff at Congham Hall to reflect this and I for one greatly look forward to not having to make excuses for the poor standard of some parts of the hotel!

The poor, or rather slow, service that you encountered during the first half of your stay is inexcusable irrespective of the physical shortcomings and I am very sorry the enjoyment of your visit was marred by the delays. Service should preferably be professional, although we do rely to a great deal on enthusiastic yet young and inexperienced staff, but it absolutely must be smooth and efficient if we are to succeed in providing guests with an enjoyable break.

My husband and I stayed here a couple of years ago and enjoyed it and then suddenly, quite out of the blue, received an email a couple of weeks ago with a newsletter saying the hotel was under new management and giving details of a special 'Jubilee offer' so we booked to go with our 2 sons (aged 2½ and 5). The room rate was for D,B&B with a couple of extras thrown in. The children were free with the exception of any meals they took. We had a lovely light and airy suite - Dandelion - which was great because it meant we had a bedroom and lounge, so we didn't have to tiptoe around in the dark after the boys had gone to bed. The only downside for us was that the room had a balcony overlooking the lawn, which was lovely, but petrifying with our very active toddler, so we had to keep the french windows shut at all times. The pool and spa facilities were fabulous and the pool is one depth - 1.2m so we didn't have any 'panics' with a deep end. Families are restricted to using the pool between 9-10am and 4-6pm.
Most guests in the hotel were well-to-do and considerably older than us, so we did feel pressured to make sure the boys were silent. The staff were excellent; very kind and supportive. The food was excellent too. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to get to the restaurant on any of our 3 nights there, but we did order room service - the restaurant a la carte menu one evening and then from the room service menu on the other 2 nights - the homemade burger and chips comes highly recommended!! There are other nice touches, such as wellies for guests to use, tea and coffee making facilities available in the room (they must have taken note of one of the other reviewer's comments) and your windscreen cleaned every morning. All in all, we love the hotel, especially now it has the pool, but we would feel more relaxed as a couple than a family. My husband is going back there to stay on business next week.

Room Tip: Corner rooms/suites have 2 windows in the lounge, so very light and airy.

I am so glad we picked this hotel to take my Mother away for a weekend. We had 2-rooms for the 2-nights and more than thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel has been taken out of administration by the new owners recently which might explain some earlier reviews this year. I could not complement the staff enough, right through to housekeeping, everyone has a warm smile and a friendly word. Housekeeping are indeed to be complimented as the rooms and areas are clearly given full attention despite some areas/room being in need of refurbishment (lovely to be shown round and see the progress and the commitment from the staff). The complimentary toiletries in our rooms were crabtree and evelyn and the towels, bath robes, duvets and bed linen all lovely quality. The major bonus was the outstanding food, very much fine dinning from the beautiful canapes, elegantly presented 3-courses which were delicious and delicate petite fours with coffee. The meal experience was the whole evening which we really enjoyed but were grateful we had elected to start early. I very much hope we get the chance to stay again.
