I do wonder what research the company and the Wensleydale railway did before this trip was commissioned. The normal Wensleydale trains seem to be an engine pulling four carriages. On this trip an ancient diesel was expected to pull eleven carriages plus a steam locomotive - unsurprisingly the diesel broke down, the steam loco couldn't manage tp push the train into Leyburn station, and so the afternoon was wasted, whilst we were trapped on the train going nowhere, until "rescued" by a diesel from York Railway Museum. Information was sporadic and we frequently had to ask directly just what was going on. There was a raffle on board, first prize was ticket to go on another day trip with the railway Touring Company; one of the passengers had us all amused by his assertion "second prize is two trips"!

We've just returned from our 2nd trip with RTC, on this occasion from Newcastle to Wensleydale via Morpeth, Bedlington Newcastle, Stockton, Darlington and Northallerton. The day started well with the steam loco on time, and heating on in the coaches, but we were 20 miles into our journey before the itinerary booklets were handed out. Unexpected delays occurred, but we accept this is normal on charter trains. However, when we eventually got on to the single line track into Wensleydale just about 20 minutes behind schedule, and by then hauled 'up' the dale by a diesel electric loco, it broke down a couple of times and eventually gave up the ghost completely about 2 miles before Leyburn. Staff took rather more than half an hour before any explanations were given. The steam loco, which at this stage was at the rear of the train could not push the whole train (and diesel loco) up the hill, so we just remained in the same place until the steam engine eventually hauled us out of the dale and back on to the main line. By this time we had missed our 'slot' so spent a lot more time waiting for something to happen. When we eventually got away the steam loco made good time and we arrived back in Necastle only 20 minutes late. So, apart from a scheduled stop at Darlington Station, we spent the whole day stopping and starting and stopping again, and going nowhere. Our 1st trip was great without real problems but this one was simply mediocre. If this trip had been our 1st , it would definitely be our last.

There seem to be many un-empathetic fools who write nonsense pertaining to the The Railway Touring Company. These guys are doing their absolute best to offer a true nostalgic experience in the best way possible. Usually all goes according to plan ( the Cotswold Venturer on the 6th October 2012 was one such day ) , BUT the locomotive and rolling stock used are old , obviously , and SOMETIMES they break... this is fine and part of the experience! Get real!
In terms of the aforementioned trip that we did , it was superlative in every way. Perfection , from the food , the staff , the timing , the entire day! Perhaps , those who detract , should work out the very difficult logistics that are needed to be overcome to make these events occur... Agent/Sales/Engine hired/Rolling Stock hired/Trip arranged/Network Rail permission and pathing/Other full time normal trains going twice the speed around you/ etc.../and Catering !!!!

This is peculiarly british in its frequency and quality and should be applauded.
We write very few reviews on this site and you can tell a little from others that we are rather discerning in where we stay and choose to write about so suffice to say the this experience is amongst the best ever for us.

Lastly for 13 hours of entertainment , superb food , excellent choice of drinks and Pullman seating in Premiere Class , the price is not expensive at all... ( Try the inferior , in my view , Orient Express - which , of course is superb overall , it doesn't offer the actual reality of the bygone age that we just remember.. We liked the 50's carriages which weren't "done up", but essentially original...including yellow / orange loo's ... hysterical and perfect... as my better half said "Thank God , there are no square basins with auto taps!" ( Not that we don't like those - indeed our properties all have them! ) , BUT they would have been in-appropriate for this trip.

Well done to all!

We shall be back!
