The White Horse feels like a work in progress, but heading in the right direction. Our experience was lunch at a table with a view of the quayside (one of the few), a view enjoyed during the fairly lengthy wait for our food to be served. A reassuring wait, however, as attractive, freshly-prepared plates appeared at neighbouring tables. Our choices: generous, crisp fish and chips, an interesting take on cassoulet and fresh fish of the day absolutely were worth the wait. This is the best kind of gastro-pub cooking: inventive and thoughtful, and at the same time honest and generous.
It's said that if you solve a problem the customer feels better than if it never had occurred, and here was proof: one dish arrived with a scattering of black pepper (we specifically had asked that it not be added). It was replaced without question, albeit after another wait. Five minutes into this second wait the waiter arrived with a complementary surprise board of pitta and tzatziki to fill the gap.
Only one of our party had a gap large enough for pudding, crumble in a rather more dainty portion than the mains. Cafetiere coffee (no espresso machine - yet?) completed a rather long but very satisfying lunch.
Definitely worth the wait.
