“AMAZING ACCOMMODATION!!!!!!”

We stayed at the Manor House over a weekend in May and were very impressed! The pictures on the websites just don't do it the justice it deserves! As well as all of spacious bedrooms, many with large en suites, the 3 lounges all had log burners, which made our evenings very cosy and the kitchen, with aga, was definitely the party point of the weekend! We also enjoyed a couple of evenings in the local pub, which really is a cock stride away - where we were served lovely home cooked food and welcomed by Becky and the locals! In summary, the house was clean, spacious, very comfortable and excellent value for money! I would highly recommend for a group booking!

We are so glad you enjoyed the 60th birthday celebrations and thank you so much for writing a review. We are delighted that you had such a good time at The Manor as we love the house to be filled with people enjoying themselves. Good news about the shower - we are fitting a shower room shortly! You also chose some really good places to visit - Mark and I (and the family) also love trips to The Tan Hill Inn and a little antiquing in Barnard Castle.

“Lovely House”

I booked the Manor House for a weekend break for a group of friends to get together with our children. This is the fourth cottage break we have had together as a group and we all agree this was by far the best!!! The house is a lovely old property with many original features but has a really warm, cosy feel to it. The children all loved playing hide and seek and exploring all the different rooms while the parents enjoyed relaxing by the fire chatting over wine. The kitchen was well stocked with all the things you need to cater for large parties and it was wonderful to get everyone round such a large table to eat our meals together!!! Overall we had a wonderful time and the only disappointing thing was the weather was so bad we didn't get to explore the area so we all agreed to go back to the Manor House next year to explore properly. I was surprised to read the previous review full of complaints as we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and can't wait to book again. Thank you Mark and Caroline for sharing your beautiful home!

“Disappointing”
Reviewed December 4, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

We stayed here with a group of friends travelling from Scotland and England and chose this as a mid way point to all meet up. The house is spacious and easily accommodated the 9 of us. One of the sitting rooms was closed off but left one sitting room and a large kitchen. The kitchen was by far the best room as the Aga made it cosy. The rest of the house was cold. The heating didn't work at all the second night we were there. Hot water was intermittent the first day of our stay and non existent on the second. Out of the 9 of us only one person managed to have a shower with warm-ish water. For £750 a night and in 2012, we were expecting better shower facilities and heating. The showers are not overhead but attachments to the taps. Out of the two family bathrooms only one had a plastic attachment which was really suitable only for washing your hair if leaning over the bath and was not long enough to stand up and shower with. It is many, many years since I have had to sit in an inch of luke warm water in a freezing room and wash my hair with a jug. I certainly don't expect to pay through the nose for the privilege. Considering that half the guests staying are over 2 metres tall, this was far from satisfactory. When the people who had booked the house mentioned (politely) to the owners that there was no heating on the second day it eas brushed aside by them as it 'must have had something to do with ghost!' The house was damp, water was running down the staricase walls and the wallpaper was peeling away from the walls in most of the bedrooms. We arrived in three cars and parking was awkward and we ended up blocking part of the neighbour's entrance. If the house was full to capacity there could easily be more than 3 cars and parking would be even more of a problem. I wasn't happy leaving my car parked in a narrow and quite busy street. If you are thinking of staying in this area I would suggest you look elsewhere or book your stay in the hot summer months.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. As you may understand, your comments have come as a terrible shock and for the following reasons:
• Until you contacted us some five days after you had left the property we had been completely unaware that you had a problem with the heating/hot water. It would have been advisable for you to have contacted us or the caretakers (who live in the village) and given us the opportunity to sort things out. This problem would then have been corrected immediately.
• You did not pay £750 per night your group actually paid only £795 for the weekend.
• Despite having to close off a sitting room (for which we apologised) we did still offer you a drawing room, a sitting room (both with very effective wood burners), a conservatory (with a portable electric heater) and a large kitchen, complete with Aga.
• The bathrooms are as stated in the write up and we have not added frills. It is an old and charming house and we have retained many of the old features.
• There is plenty of space to park without necessitating blocking in our neighbours. This has not been an issue over the past decade.
You did however make a fair point, which is an issue for us… The house, like many others in the region, is made of sandstone and is vulnerable to an ingress of water on certain exposed elevations. It has been such a frightful year for rain! However you stated that the wallpaper is coming away in all the rooms. It is not.
I would have warmly welcomed a more balanced approach from your review. Most of us care very much about both our homes and our guests who stay in them and will do whatever we can to help when needed. Our family home is beautiful with much to offer and there are many positive things you might have said. We do not pretend to be a five star hotel but we do offer a homely stay at a reasonable cost. Many of our valued guests love the house which is apparent as many come back again and again.
The comment made about the ghost was daft and was made in gentle jest and only after we had been told that your group had enjoyed a lovely weekend at the house. For that we are truly sorry. Despite that we have and will always endeavour to ensure that any issues raised are swiftly dealt with. We can only do this if we are informed and first given the opportunity to address them!
