“Waitby School near Kirby Stephen”
Reviewed January 1, 2018 for a stay in December 2017

A very classy holiday home. The owners had obviously gone the extra mile with attention to detail: chocolates, decorated Christmas tree and crackers! The location is beautiful and very tranquil. We hit a snowy spell and , not wanting to risk the narrow country roads by car, we just walked from the front door. The roads are so quiet that road walking is a pleasure. The nature reserve at Smardale was our favourite walk. The house itself has lots of character and is very well equipped (Bose sound system etc. ) . You can't have everything, and choosing to stay in a listed building with some single glazed windows means that some rooms were a little cool at times despite the efficient underfloor central heating. We were visiting during some of the coldest nights of the year and once the log stove got going everything was fine.
Thanks for a great place to see in the New
Year.

“Idillic Cumbrian getaway!”
Reviewed November 25, 2017 for a stay in November 2017

The location of this property is breathtaking, with views of rolling fields from every window and a cosy log fire it has everything you need as well as a jacuzzi bath.
The local town is a very short drive down the road and has a decent curry house, the Mango Tree. Lake Windermere is approx 40 mins drive and is worth a visit as is Kirby Lonsdale. With plenty of suggestions in the book at the cottage we weren't short of ideas. Would most definitely return for a longer stay and tick more places of the list!

“Wonderful accommodation for a Cumbrian stay”
Reviewed November 30, 2015 for a stay in November 2015

We visited at the weekend and knew we wouldn't be disappointed given the excellent reviews. Waitby School is very spacious, and everything has been decorated to a high standard. The kitchen is well equipped so cooking at home for the odd meal is not an issue. Plenty of pubs nearby so lots of meal options. The welcome pack was great as it contained lots of suggestions.

The DVD collection and vast amount of books kept us entertained as the weather wasn't great for outdoor activities.

We visited Platform3 soft play to entertain the 1 and 2 year old and this was perfect.

Would definitely stay again.

“A perfect holiday home for a family”
Reviewed September 6, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We stayed in waitby school during the summer holidays. It was well laid out for a family- and had lots of welcome extras like the extensive DVD and book collections as well as the teddy bears up in the children's bedroom.

It was well appointed and everything was very clean. The linen, towels and toiletries were all great quality and made the stay extra nice!

The view is stunning and although we didn't have great weather we did use the terrace a bit in the evenings just to make the most of the sunsets.

The town is not far- and there are a few nice pubs to eat at all within a short drive.

We would highly recommend this house to families or friends looking for some peace, quiet and luxury.

“Fantastic luxury family holiday get away!”
Reviewed February 27, 2015 for a stay in February 2015

This beautiful school, was the perfect half-term get away for my family. Situated in the most amazing location, with everything you need just a few miles away. Although the school is very luxury and finished to an expectional high standard, it had everything you could possible need to ensure a perfect stay.

“Felt like we were staying in a luxury hotel, but with the freedom to cook for ourselves”
Reviewed October 31, 2014 for a stay in October 2013

We visited Waitby School with friends, so four adults and three children spent a really good half term in Cumbria.

First of all, the house… Wow, it felt like a hotel, but with the freedom to come and go as we pleased, and most importantly of all, we could cook our own meals in the well-equipped kitchen. Mr Blue Lamb, who does most of the cooking on holiday (he can be a nightmare if things aren't right), was in his element. He’s a rather temperamental chef, but even he couldn’t fault the way it was all kitted out.

The rooms were lovely, spacious and airy – minimally furnished as they are quite small, but really comfortable. And the furnishings, bedding, etc, were nice to sleep in. We want sheets like that at home!

We particularly enjoyed the thoughtful book collection (sorry, I still need to return one that I borrowed to finish and I know it has been a long time) and the DVDs kept the children amused while we chatted and enjoyed our red wine. The sound system was amazing. We were worried that the house might seem a bit small for seven people, but at no stage did we feel cramped – and the main room in particular is really airy. I would guess that this was the original school building, as it has really high ceilings.

We were lucky with the weather – always a gamble on a British holiday as we head towards winter – and the location of Waitby School was perfect. We spent glorious autumn days out in the Lake District (the Pencil Museum was a hit with the children, though all I could think of was the film 'Sightseers'), drove around the Yorkshire Dales (very James Herriott) and had some nice pies in Appleby. We didn’t make it to Bowes Museum, as we ran out of time, but will be doing so next time we stay.

The garden was big enough for the kids to run around, but safely enclosed so we didn’t have to worry about them running into the road (although it is relatively quiet, we did like spotting the tractors though and all enjoyed watching the sheep in the field opposite).

In all, this was a fabulous holiday home, definitely a cut above the usual standard of self-catering. We have often rented self-catering properties in Cornwall and France and have some horror stories (as well as some good ones, of course), mostly involving poor cleanliness and kitchens full of broken cooking utensils. No problems like that with this holiday.

We had a great holiday, thank you. None of us wanted to come home.
