We stayed here on a deal for 2 nights bed and breakfast with dinner and afternoon tea - as a couple. The afternoon tea was as you would expect in a swanky hotel in London and far exceeded our expectations and the dinner was award winning. A three course meal that we could hardly finish it was so big and cooked to a very high standard. They have a large fitness suite and swimming pool - we took advantage of the fitness suite where they greet you with a towel so no need to take your own. There were numerous pieces of equipment so no waiting. We didn't use the spa so cannot comment but the range of treatments was comprehensive. The room was huge with a king sized bed and the room itself was quite characterful with a deep window sill that you could sit on and look out over the Kirkby Lonsdale scenery. The bathroom had one of the biggest showers we've ever seen too. The characterful sloping floors and log fire in the lounge with board games and papers/books that you could use/read was very welcoming. The hotel is a short 15 minute walk away from Kirkby Lonsdale down the hill which is a lovely little town with many shops and choices for eating out if you want a different experience from the hotel. The hotel is well placed for Arnside and surrounding areas so all in all, a very good location with excellent service and value for money.

I've just returned with my husband after a 2 night stay which we thoroughly enjoyed. The hotel was very welcoming and warm, the log fire was very welcoming in January. On our first night we both had homemade pizzas which I thought would give a take away a run for their money just gorgeous.
The Staff were very friendly, the gentleman who works for them went the extra mile for us. Neither of us had been to the area before and he recommend different areas to go to, if it hadn't been for him i would have never seen the Yorkshire dales.
Breakfast was lovely, because there wasn't many of us they took our order and freshly cooked it which was nice.
The spa area was nice and clean and tidy and was great to use.

Yes the bathrooms may need a little TLC but they were clean and tidy, but I think that is a small issue considering the price we paid. I've paid a lot more and had worse.

My only small issue was the price of the spirits I did think they were very expensive (double to what you pay in the south).

Am returning in the summer with our older children so that must say a lot which we our looking forward to.

We visited Whoop Hall for a two night stay in late November after seeing it advertised online.
We rang them directly to ask for their availability (as we were booking the day before we were going) and they offered us the same deal directly.

Initially when we arrived there were some issues with the lighting in our room, but we were shown to the lounge/bar area (we thought this area could have benefited from a bit of tlc) and offered a free drink while we waited for this to be fixed. The staff were friendly and accommodating. We also used this opportunity to have our afternoon tea that was included with the deal. It came with tea (or coffee), scones, other cakes and sandwiches. All very tasty.

We were then shown to our room, which was very clean and modern - it looked like it had been recently renovated. I can't remember the room number but we we're up the stairs that face reception. We were initially concerned as we had seen reviews saying rooms facing the road were noisy but we had no issues sleeping.

The breakfast included was a continental spread but also included some hot items, all in a buffet style. We enjoyed breakfast and headed out to explore the surrounding area.

On both evenings we were there we used the swimming pool that is in the gym. It a good sized pool and a lovely way to relax in an evening. It was never overly busy but we were visiting midweek.

On the second night we ate in the restaurant and the food was okay. We weren't blown away by it, but again, this was included in the price of our stay so we certainly can't complain.

Overall, we really enjoyed our mini-break and would recommend this hotel, particularly if you can get one of the online deals with the extras included. Just don't arrive expecting a brand new modern hotel.

Have just returned from a one night stay. It was a homely place to stay, cosy and warm in January. The log fires in the lounge and bar area added to the experience. The staff were very friendly, cheerful and helpful. We didn't expect the dinner to be amazing, but it exceeded our expectations. We had roast beef and pork- the meat was well cooked and tasty. The vegetables were not overcooked. Likewise, the buffet breakfast was well cooked with good quality produce used. A good quality fresh ground coffee would have enhanced the meals for us (we chose tea).
The surrounding are is delightful- Kirkby Lonsdale being an 'old fashioned' picturesque village.
Whoop Hall has a swimming pool- we can't comment on this as we didn't use it. All in all, as long as you don't expect a 5 star establishment, it is a good value, down to earth and homely place to stay. By the way, the room was clean and the bed comfortable providing us with a restful night's sleep.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back were very peaceful once the music was turned off downstairs

So we have just returned from our 2-night stay over New Year, on the back of an earlier stay in February 2013. Frankly for the price I don't think you can complain and the positives outweigh the bits you have to deal with - you have a fantastic location, food & real ale, the spa and facilities, and the opportunity to take your dog, and the cost. That's why we returned and enjoyed it (again).
I think those who have said so are right, some parts look a little tired, and the pictures of some of the bedrooms do not lie. You also have to "know the ropes" with regard to how the hotel heats the bedrooms, and that the owner runs it "his way".
So my advice is go to the Ritz if you want to pay their prices, however when booking at Whoop Hall check what room you are being booked into and whether it is recently refreshed. Use the communal parts of the hotel in the day which have open fires and comfortable surroundings. And be prepared for normal human contact with members of staff. Generally it is very friendly and helpful but as with anyone, the owner's mannerisms can be strange at times.
Overall if you want a break, without breaking the bank then go for it. If you are a bit particular don't bother and spend much more to try and get utopia, then keep wondering why you never succeed.

Room Tip: The first floor up the stairs in the main part of the hotel (18 plus) seem to be OK I think.
