“New Year Break”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

My wife and i stayed here for a New Years Eve break and we loved it, we arrived a bout 6 but unfortunately couldnt use the pool, a bit disappointing especially seen as though we booked this hotel based on the pool etc.

Anyway that aside, the night was fantastic, the buffet dinner was lovely, first time i have seen a full pig being carved up in front of us, brilliant!! A real friendly atmosphere within the hotel! The room was nice, i would of preferred an upgrade but didnt say anything because we booked at the last minute. The party at night was good too which ending up with everyone having a boogie!

Breakfast was amazing! Hopefully we will be back soon and this time use the pool ;)

We went here on a 2 night stay for our 46th wedding anniversary.
PROS. The room no. 2 was a good size and very clean and a convenient location. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The leisure facilities were as good as any top hotel. The food and service in the restaurant was excellent. The location of the hotel is great for visiting many of the surrounding main lake resorts (Kendall, Windemere etc.) also it is only 5 mins drive into Kirkby Lonsdale town center which is a lovely must see town.
CONS. We went on a deal from Groupon which is great for us but it seems not very profitable for the hotel and can make the hotel manager look on you in a different light. We went into the town centre on our 2nd night and because it was our happy anni we decided to take a taxi which was only £5. We had a lovely night and had visited a couple of the local bars before we decided to go back for a nightcap. It was only 11.20 so we stupidly thought there would be no problem getting a cab. This is when things went pear shaped for us it seems there are no cab firms in the vicinity only cab people 2 to be exact and when we inquired they had gone to bed. I was panicking by now because through a recently botched hip operation my walking was very limited and I had forgotten my walking stick. We phoned the hotel to see if they could advise us in any way at all only to be answered by a very irate manager who made us feel like naughty children. It was pitch black completely deserted country road back to the hotel with only the dim light from our mobile phone to guide us I have never been so scared in all my life. Oh and to add to the misery it was raining as well. It took approx. 35mins because I could only walk slow and by now was in pain and discomfort. You could not imagine the welcome we got on our return it was a very Basil Fawlty on a bad day moment.
I know we have to accept that at our age(64yrs) we should know better BUT you would think that the manager who gave us the taxi number and also the taxi driver could have informed us that we would not be able to get anywhere after 10 o clock.
After saying all this I do understand the manager considering the menial profit he is getting and I'm sure if you got on the right side of him he would be much more pleasant.
Also I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would not hesitate to return there.Just BEWARE of the taxi situation.

We were slightly concerned on arrival as there were mixed reviews. However it was a great little stay. Despite appalling weather conditions, staff couldn't do enough to help, the leisure facilities were as good as any I had been in in a hotel, the evening meal and breakfast were excellent and the room was comfortable and clean. Book in and take advantage of this fabulous little hotel

We went as a post-crimbo chill out-and-relax couple of days with the Groupon deal. Absolutely fantastic value it is as well - Our experience was entirely positve, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, with the hotel serving its purpose superbly.

The staff are great - really friendly, made us feel welcome, and nothing was ever too much trouble. The food we found to be again absolutely spot-on, and again, i cant stress again, the evening meal and breakfasts represent tremendous value. The included evening meal deal is no 'slap it on your plate and make do with it from a reduced menu', canteen food, but rather, it is excellently presented, cooked and delivered food. (That rice pud was just perfect - i had forgotten how good proper rice pud is !) We ate out in Kirby lonsdale the second night (meeting friends), but we should have stayed in as the food was better here than where we ate (the orange tree)

As for the included afternoon tea - i expected a cup of tea and a biscuit - However, the sandwiches, cakes and freshly made scones, clotted cream and jams we were presented was both unexpected, and frankly delicious. Just perfect, sat in front of the fire, and working our way (slightly guiltily so soon after christmas) through the cakes, tea, and then more cakes.

The gym, spa and pool are very well specced, and indeed my wife and her friend both enjoyed time wtih the beautician - again, a really good value price, and although the treatment room could have been warmer (which detracted from the experience slightly) everything else was just fine.

We were in room 18, which was again, for the price, just great. Massive bed, warm room, well appointed wardrobe and shelve space, with the ensuite, large, wtih a bath (bliss) as well as a over-bath shower. The bathroom, if you wanted to be hyper-critical (which i dont) might at some point do with a freshen up - though nothing urgent is required at all, and is certainly nothing which detracted from the overall entirely enjoyable break we had, or the quality of the room we stayed in.

The staff we spoke to really showed a pride in both what they did, and in the hotel in which they worked in. This hotel is small enough to feel intimate and comfortable (i'm really not a fan of the large, impersonal, and alienating, 150+ roomed, international-branded , marble and chrome ridden hotel chains that seem to dominate the 5* ratings). There were enough guests and staff to have a comfortable, friendly and approachable atmosphere in the bar, lounge and dining room / bistro throughout our stay without it being over-crowded or, oppositely, 'empty-feeling'. For me, just right.

I think its hard at the moment to be trying to run, and work in, a hotel - money, especially after xmas, is very tight, and it seems to me that sometimes consumers want something for nothing, and then complain when they dont get it. Some of the negative comments made in other reviews at times feel churlish and harsh (though i am sure that some are genuine issues - as there are, where ever you go). I can only say how we found the hotel, the staff and the whole experience. We found it great, i would (and will ) recommend it to anyone - especially the groupon deal - (which is frankly the nearest thing to getting that 'something for next to nothing !!) How they do it is beyond me.

Thanks again guys for a great break.

Room Tip: We had room 18 - large, warm, well specced, with a large bathroom (with bath as well as overhead sho...

we have just arrived back from a 2 night stay at this hotel and we are baffled by some of the reviews we read before our stay. Our room was fine, large enough, large double bed, good bathroom, everything clean and plenty of tea and coffee. That takes care of upstairs but what about the food and drink. The drinks prices were in line with many hotels of this standard, apart from the draught beers and largers which we would say were somewhat lower. The food was excellent in every area, in fact the smoked salmon risotto with poached egg starter, was a work of art in looks and taste. The staff were brilliant and although sometimes there were short waits, we were on a break and as such were chilled,"whats the rush". Definitely returning.

The staff were terrific--friendly and hard working but there weren;t enough of them resulting in long waits at Dinner.

The Gala Buffet was excellent but at £295 per person for 3 nights it was poor value---no canapes ; no champagne at midnight;no fireworks--nothing to do on New Years Day as Country Club closed at 2pm.

The room was basic;quite cold ;clean enough.

Public rooms were very attractive and location good.

We have stayed at the Whoop Hall three times now, and each time we have found the hotel standards very high. The rooms are comfortable, the staff are friendly and helpful, the food is very good. Adrian the hotel / restaurant manager is excellent, nothing is too much trouble, and this can be said for the rest of the staff and the owner and his wife, who was on reception.
