We stayed in Kirkby for two weeks on a visit from the states. We were a bit skeptical of the Royal Hotel at first (without reason), but on the first Sunday when it seemed that many places had stopped serving, they were open and welcoming. Since the first visit we returned several times for dessert and drinks as well as for their pizza special.
Our food was consistently good and carefully presented. On one occasion, we went in looking for the dessert special from the previous night which of course was not available. The bartender spoke the kitchen who attempted to replicate it with alternative nuts and ice cream. The gesture was sweet and very appreciated.
Our highlight was when we went in for their 4:30-6:30 pizza special- the cost of the pizza is whatever the time is! How could you go wrong?! We own a portable wood fired pizza oven back home, cater weddings and special events and also vend at the local farmers market where we feature local produce on our pizzas. We weren't sure what to expect because our expectations are quite high. We were pleasantly surprised. It was as authentic as it comes in England! The toppings were nice, the crust a little too blonde, but with a good crisp and not cooked in a pan!
On our last visit, the man who appeared to be the manager joked with us saying he's see us the next day for desserts and drinks. How sad we were to inform him that we were heading home, but had appreciated the service and food.
If anything they could improve in it'd be the atmosphere. A little bland with boring music. This place has potential, go for it!
