“Beautiful location & high standard”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2013

We went to this hotel with our dog for my husband's birthday to see Swan Upping. Booking was very efficient & helpful as was reception on arrival. Rob being particularly warm & kind yet very professional. Our room was very well equipped including high speed broadband at no extra charge. Unfortunately we had not anticipated the lovely sunny weather when we booked & all tables on the terrace had been reserved when we thought about it. It's as well to reserve a terrace table on initial booking with the obvious let out that you won't sit there if it's raining. However we had a pleasant table in the conservatory which with the doors open gave us good views and a very pleasant ambience. Service at dinner was very erratic. At breakfast the service was exemplary including a free pot of tea an hour later (within breakfast hours) when we were sitting on the terrace reading the paper and a bowl of water was already provided for the dog.
We would recommend The Compleat Angler as a dog friendly hotel in a beautiful location with kind, courteous and helpful staff..

Your comments are appreciated. Swan Upping is a very special event which we welcome every year. I am glad that you find the staff to be kind, courteous and helpful which is the standard that we will to portray. I will ensure that Robert, our Head Concierge, receives your kind comments specifically. The weather does bring people flocking to enjoy the river views and pass the day. Depending on the weather, the restaurant will set tables outside, which you can request when booking. For bar food, we do not reserve tables outside, however, there is usually one becoming available every 5 or 10 minutes. We do look forward welcoming you back.

Kind regards

A lovely situation, but mixed service. I was told that bar service was not available in the garden, when we could see other guests being served. The air conditioning is barely functioning. The food served at the wedding I attended was good. Bar prices are extortionate. Compared to other hotels in this chain I felt that this one did not preform to its 4* rating.

Thank you for your feedback. We service drinks outside on the lawn or the restaurant terrace depending and other events in the hotel. At the time of your visit to the lawn, we may have been switching from one area to the other. I am sorry if this was not explained to you at the time. Unfortunately, we do not have air conditioning, we have climate control which cannot control the temperature during extreme conditions. The air conditioning has just been serviced again so this will have resolved any issues found in your specific room. The bar prices are in line with other hotels of a similar standard and include a good selection of bar nibbles. I am glad that you enjoyed the food served for the wedding.

I do hope that you will have the opportunity to return and enjoy the hotel and it’s location, coupled with more consistent levels of service.

Kind regards

Glorious sunshine, tables on the banks of the Thames, good food, excellent service, heaven! We stayed for two nights over a hot weekend in July. Took a little while to check in as the reception does not seem geared up to handling two parties that arrive at the same time, We were shown to a very nice room overlooking the river, directly opposite the church, view spoilt slightly by the conservatory roof below. Lovely small balcony which allowed us to keep the French windows open all night, happily we were not kept awake by the sounds from the weir, or the church bells. We would loved to have awarded 5 stars but little things let it down - mostly in the housekeeping area. The mattress in our room (room 11) sagged badly in the middle, that and the pillows definitely need replacing. Quite mean with the toiletries - Molton Brown but no conditioner or body lotion and the light kept fading in the bathroom. For us the worst was the proliferation of insects and small spiders, especially in the evening, around the tables on the terrace - the fencing was filthy and the badly fitting lights attracted the insects to their death. As the drinks service was very slow, there was plenty of time to notice such things! The public rooms are attractive and it was nice to have a piano being played in the bar.
Having said all this - would I go again? Definitely.

Thank you for your feedback following your stay with us. I am glad to hear that you would return despite some of the shortfalls experienced. Please be assured that your comments have been discussed with the team in order that we take appropriate action. The pianist is here every Saturday and Fridays (except on Jazz dinner nights). It is certainly difficult to keep on top of the insects next to the weir, however, we are placing a much bigger emphasis on this issue. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Visited for a wedding at the weekend. It is a gorgeous locations, but the experience was somewhat over cast by the attitude of the service staff.

We attempted to have lunch in various different locations (including the restaurant, bar and on the lawn) in the hotel before the wedding and the service was appalling. Despite the *obscene* amounts of money we as a family were spending with the hotel, making a sandwich for my two year old nephew was apparently beyond the skill sets of the staff, furthermore they were offensively rude about it.

Thank you for this feedback. We do serve on either the lawn or the terrace depending on events, such as weddings in the hotel. Both offer views of the River Thames. I am sorry that you experienced such poor service and I am shocked that we did not offer a sandwich to your son. This is unacceptable and I can assure you that this has been dealt with appropriately. I do hope that you will return again in the future.

I have not experienced such bad service in a hotel for a long time, especially the Bowaters restaurant.
After having a fantastic lunch at the Hand and Flowers, we thought we would go back to our hotel for a drink by the river. First of all, most of the tables outside are reserved for weddings, second when we got a table we asked 4 times for drinks menus and food menus and were ignored, when my drink finally arrived it was served in a cracked glass. We then spent ages trying to order food, which again we were ignored and were finally served ice cream after 40 mins wait with a knife and fork. All the staff were very rude and constantly told you that they didn't work in that section and it was someone else's fault and have no apology. The bar area was dirty and tired, I get the impression they trade on location not repeat business, as there were many other disgruntled customers around us.
Fortunately our room was nice, so as long as you stay away from the bars and restaurants at the hotel you may have a pleasant stay!

Thank you for this feedback. I am sorry to learn of your disappointment. It is clear that we got it wrong on this weekend. This is not our normal standard or one that we wish to portray. Please be assured that we have addressed our weaknesses that became apparent with the additional demands brought on by the prolonged period of excellent weather. I offer this merely as an explanation and not an excuse. I do hope that you will give us another opportunity and stay with us again,

Kind regards,

A group of four of us had a one night stay over the weekend as the end of our first leg of our Jerome K Jerome, three men in a boat row down the Thames. The hotel was great, nice big (upgraded room) overlooking the weir. Service was great, although there was confusion with our mooring availability, which ended up being dealt with without too much fuss. We ate in town as the restaurant couldn't seat us until 9.30 pm, however we had breakfast the next morning, which was very good. Generally a decent 4 star hotel, with a nice feel.

Room Tip: Ask for a view overlooking the weir, a great way to wake up!

Thank you for your feedback. I am glad that you had an enjoyable stay. I am only sorry that you could not dine with us. Unfortunately, the restaurants are both very busy, especially weekends during summer months. I hope that we can welcome you again soon,

Went here for a stag evening (yes, not your typical stag night!) and was impressed by the beautiful location, champagne and canapes on the lawn overlooking the river and then in for a delicious dinner. The food was simply excellent. Our pre-orders had been lost, but that was actually a positive as I changed my mind. The service was also excellent.
Stayed the night in a comfortable room, in a comfortable bed and enjoyed an excellent breakfast the next morning.
3 issues - 1 - finding my room. The hotel feels a little like a tardis and if you plan to have a drink or two, might be worth getting a room somewhere near the main area!
2. the price of a beer - had a bottle of beer from the bar which cost over £6. No beer on draft and 12.5% service added for the delight of being passed a bottle and glass. I am sure I could have asked for it to be taken off, but then one doesn't want to make a scene (which is probably what they rely on)
3. £3 credit card charge. Really? On a bill of over £300 for the accomodation and restaurant meal. Just seems a bit mean when the prices are already on the very high side. I don't mind paying them for the food and service in the restaurant, but this just left a bad taste in my mouth as I left.
Would I go here again? definitely - but they would improve the experience by not adding sneaky nasty costs.

Thank you for your comments following your stay with us. The hotel has been here for over 400 years so some rooms are a little more difficult signs, however, we do have signage in place. The standard bottles of beer are £4.55 to £5.00, however, we do have a ‘pint’ bottle of local Marlow Beer that is £5.55. These should be served to your table, along with a large selection of nibbles. The service charge is discretionary. The £3 charge is only for those paying by credit card and not be debit card or cash. I am sorry that you have found this charges aggravating, however, I am pleased that you are not deterred from returning.

Kind regards
