FIRMM Whale Watching
Reviewed October 7, 2012

One of the best whale watching operators around, firmm is actively engaged in conservation and research on cetaceans in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Conditions in the strait can often be rough, but they won't go out if there is little chance to see any whales and dolphins. On my second outing the wind picked up and we had no luck. The company organised another trip from Algiceras on the following day and gave us free tickets. It was wonderful as we saw hundreds of common dolphins in the bay.
In the strait itself we encountered striped dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales which stayed with the boat for a long time.
It was an unforgettable experience and I will definitely return if I get the chance :)

We went on this trip recently as I love seeing whales and dolphins! We saw HUNDREDS of dolphins but no whales! Still, it was not for lack of trying and the boat stayed out longer than the 2 hours as they were so keen to try to find some.

We booked very last minute and through another company who were very helpful but didn't have a trip going at the time we needed so they booked us on this one instead. We really enjoyed the tour despite the lack of whales but I have to say that were totally unimpressed by the guide who spoke mainly German and only translated the very basic words into English so we did not really know what we were looking at - apparently there were also flying swordfish and sunfish to be seen but we couldn't understand where she was saying to look and what we were looking at! We saw the dolphins because you couldn't miss them!! But we can only guess at which type they were from looking at the photos and we certainly didn't get the information that we have had on other whale watching trips. The sound system was also totally inadequate especially if you were at the back of the boat so I'm guessing that even the German speaking people would have had some difficulties.

There was a younger girl on the boat who was also one of the staff and she chatted informally to us (and told us about the sunfish). Her English was MUCH better than the official guide (Katerina?) so she may have been better doing some of the announcements.

All in all, the only reason that I am marking this tour as average is because I love any sort of whale/dolphin watching trip and they did try very hard to find them. But the amount of information given was really very poor.

2 hour tour preceeded by a 30 minute briefing. Got to see 2 types of dolphin, and pilot whales. Would have liked to see others but it seems that the best time to go is July.

Definitely worth a trip.

Cost EUR 30.

Two hour trip with a thirty minute briefing before - they tell you about the different mammals in the Strait - well worth the money. Fast boat, knowledgeable crew, plenty of time to see the piot whales, dolphins and orca's. Pick a clear day with not too much wind so you can tell the fins from breaking waves (mornings are best). It may get a litlle choppy anyway (it's the Atlantic, after all) so don't forget your Dramamine :-P

When you are lucky you will find the orca's and all the other delfins.
