“Nice wine”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

My wife and I visited twice last week. The food was good quality, and the house wine red is a very good choice. Great location if you except a lot of people around. Nice waiters too. Watch the Balcony sunset and make a try - that's my advise to all you lucky Nerja tourists. Enjoy!

“Disappointing food”
Reviewed August 30, 2013 via mobile

It was a shame as this restaurant has the potential to be great as it is in a lovely location with music being played as you eat, but the food was awful. Our starters weren't too bad except for the burnt garlic bread but our main meals were dreadful. 2 of my children had pasta carbonara and it just tasted of greasy oil and my third child had pizza but it only had cheese right at its centre and then a very crusty burnt outside. Myself and my husband both had chicken but these were just like eating a dish of salt. It was a shame as this was our last night in Nerja.

“Service good, food disappointing”
Reviewed August 27, 2013 via mobile

With a cluster of restaurants, it was hard to choose where to eat. I guess we should have checked TA first! The service was ver attentive - so can't fault that - so they probably just need to find a new chef. My fish was overlooked; my daughter burnt her mouth on a chilli in her prawns Bombay and my husband did not enjoy his lamb chops. Our first round of garlic bread was brought out burnt. "Too dark?" The waitress asked as she proferred the burnt offering. "We'll, yes". The second batch was better... Never mind. We'll consult TA before eating out tomorrow!

“Excellent”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

It was a fantastic restaurant in the old town of Nerja. Excellent service and so good food. And plenty of it. The staff were such nice people. Looking after us very well. We enjoyed several dinners there. We know where to go for a good meal next time we are in Nerja

“Consistently good”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

El Candil, located near The Balcon in Nerja, has been in its current location for well over 20 years. Once it was the only restaurant in the Plaza, now it is surrounded by numerous, mostly pizza, eateries. That it has survived so long is a tribute to its consistently good fare. The only change to the menu over the years has been the addition of a separate pizza menu. Avoid this, the pizzas are terrible, just like cardboard.
However, the real menu is good and slightly different from the usual choice in the tourist restaurants. The kidneys cooked in sherry with rice is excellent ( altho' now served with chips, just leave them) and the fish pie is also very good. The pork kebab is also better than most. Choice of desserts is split between locally made such as creme caramel (flan) and a card of pre-made, frozen ice creams.
This is a family restaurant in a family resort so don't expect romantic but do take the family, it coped with 12 of us, half of them children. It is open all year round.
