“Late choice”
Reviewed January 13, 2014

Everything about this hotel rated excellent, the position in the resort could not have been better, right on the beach and facing south so we had sun from morning till night. The staff at this hotel were the most pleasant people you could hope to meet, always a cheery smile and always glad to help. The cleanliness was five star, all public areas immaculate and bedrooms serviced every day to a very high standard.. We would also like to complement the restaurant for the high quality of food at every meal and for the efficient way that guests were catered for. This was our first visit to Nerja and it was November but the weather was still quite pleasant but I think when we return we will choose a warmer month. This holiday was a very pleasant experience and we will definitely return.

We visited the Riu Monica fpr the fourth time, over New Year.

We spent Christmas 2012 here, and were advised that the New Year celebrations were also excellent so booked early in the year with Thomson. As always, the welcome from the Receptionists was extremely warm.

We have always been fortunate to get a room on the 7th floor, the highest in the hotel, which gives wonderful views of spectacular sunrises and sunsets, as well as the sea. Also huge balconies. Our balcony tended to get the full sun around lunchtime, then for most of the afternoon. It was also very quiet.

We have to mention the food, which on the whole is excellent. Plenty of choice at Breakfast, with a good selection of cereals, bread, and anything you would normally expect for a cooked breakfast, fruit juices, tea and coffee. Dinner was also very enjoyable, although we found the choice of vegetables not as good as on previous visits. The staff in the Dining Room really do remember us and are always very helpful, Also the bar staff. Most hotel staff have been there for many years, and there is a very pleasant atmosphere throughout the public areas.

Our room, as always, was spotlessly clean on arrival and remained so throughout our stay. Sadly, the towels are getting rather tired and should be replaced. We took extra towels of our own, and were glad of them. The rooms are a very good size, with plenty of wardrobe space and drawers.

Ann, our Thomson Rep, paid daily visits to the hotel and was extremely pleasant and efficient. Her presentation at our Arrival Meeting was excellent.

We very much enjoy our holidays, but the Riu Monica has to be the best hotel we have stayed in, in recent years. We will certainly be back soon. We also love Nerja as a resort, with its lovely walks and good shopping.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 7th floor, 734 to 746, have the best views and large balconies.

Decided to return to the Riu Monica for the Festive season and yet again we were not disappointed. How anybody can make negative comments about this hotel is beyond me.The hotel staff are always helpful with any requests eg extra pillows or niggly problems if any are sorted as swiftly as humanly possible although we never had any problems on any of our stays at the hotel.
The restaurant as usual was very efficiently run and the food choice sufficient to meet anyones choice and the Christmas and New Year Buffets were superb with free wine and Champagne.
Weather wise we endured one bad day during our stay which was on Christmas day. Heavy rain and high winds. This no way dampened our spirits as on most other days we had warm days which allowed time to relax on the sunbeds
New Year is a must visit to the Balcon de Europe.Free entertainment and a Fireworks display to welcome in the New Year the place buzzes with tourists and locals all out to enjoy the occasion.

During our holiday we also had a bus ride into Malaga, the journey takes an hour or an hour and 20 mins depending on the time of travel and only costs 8eur return.Well worth the time and trouble although I would recommend an early start and as late a return as possible as there is so much to see.Frigliani and the Caves are also worth a visit.

What more could anybody ask for to have a wonderful holiday, good food good weather and a great Hotel in the Town of Nerja.
Would definitely recommend and we will return.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pools and sea are brilliant.

After a great new year last year we decided to try it again. We were a little disappointed initially when we were told our room was no 25 ,which is on the floor beneath reception.
Nothing wrong with the room ,but we prefer a high floor , as its more private when sitting on the balcony ,several people were strolling past when we had our coffee. We decided not to unpack and went to reception and ask if they had another room ,as usual staff were pleasant and helpful and although they were full, they said that people would be leaving next day and if we returned after breakfast we would be told when the room on the fith floor they were giving us would be ready. We were glad we had asked for a move after our experience that night. The heating wasn;t very efficient and the room was very cold ,we didn't get much sleep even after finding extra blankets. Also , the room had a locked connecting door with room 24 and you could hear all their conversations and all their bathroom functions ! when we went back to reception the next morning a couple of people who were on the same floor as us were also changing rooms .As soon as we entered the new room we could feel the warmth and although the room was exactly the same it was a lot better positioned with a side sea view.
We also changed the time of our evening meal ,you are allocated a time on arrival and are usually given the early sitting at 6pm,we prefer to eat at the second sitting at 7-45pm and it's not a problem if you want o change.Breakfast you sit where you want ,but keep the allocated table for the evening meal
Everything was as good as last year, the food New Year was great ,staff were constantly refilling your wine glass with either red or white wine (free) and we had canapes and a glass of cava in the bar before we went in to dinner , also free.We can't comment on hotel entertainment for New Year as we went into the town square , where they had a band , bar and firework display at midnight. As usual ,if you stayed in the hotel for entertainment ,to reserve a table you had to purchase either wine or champagne.Returning to the hotel at about 1 am there was hot soup or hot chocolate in the area outside the restauant
The hotel was clean and comfortable and the staff went out of their way to be pleasant and helpful.
Pool and gym towels were still available at reception at no charge. The weather wasn't as warm as last year and for a lot of the week we were there it was windy, having said that ,we walked each day without a coat and there was quite a lot of sunshine .
There are a few bars in the area if you want a change from the hotel ,(and they are a lot cheaper)the problem is that most of them don't have many people in them .We used the bar across the road, called The Ship ,pleasant and reasonably priced drinks ,a gin and tonic and a glass of wine was less than 6 euros .

We booked the Monica through Thomson based on Tripadvisor reviews, price and location. Our break got off to an excellent start aboard the modern Thomson plane which took off bang on time and arrived in Malaga 40 mins early. We were not disappointed by our first view of the reception areas and our room (based on earlier reviews we had requested a room on an upper floor) 543 certainly lived up to expectations. We had opted for the East side and were awoken each morning by the most amazing sunrises. The cleanliness of the room was great and re-done every morning. Our only expectation would have been to have tea/coffee making facilities available in our room; again in view of recent reviews we had taken a travel kettle, requested cups from the reception and purchased milk, sugar and teabags at the 'supermacardo' over the road which appeared to sell 'everything'! The food on offer catered for absolutely ALL tastes at both breakfast and evening meal. All of the staff were very friendly, and keen to meet everyone's needs. As a testament to this review, most of the staff had been working at the hotel for years and virtually every guest that we spoke to had been before, some returning many times and one couple had returned each year for the past 25 years! We have visited Nerja before and love the relaxed friendly atmosphere of the town. The only negative was having to come home - we will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Higher floors provide the best views and are away from any potential noise.
