“Nice Hotel but its over due for a refurb,”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

Great staff, good food, and a very clean room. But it is really time now to refurb, the rooms. The only complaint but it`s minor is that the Hotel insist that you have to pay for a safe in your room. I cant remember the last hotel where you had to pay for this service.

Have stayed at the Monica several times over 5 years but our recent stay was disappointing. Firstly, AIR CONDITIONING or LACK OF. Useless. Its set at the managers discretion and was ineffective. Previous visits have been reasonable but not this one. All the hotel was HOT and HUMID and, for the first time, cockroaches were spotted by myself. One in the dining room.............most appetising. Cooler settings on aircon = no cockroaches !!!!!! Simples.
Secondly, the food was poor. Undercooked vegetables, bland selection, mainly fish. OK for Spanish tastes but not for mine. Roast beef was on the menu ONCE in 14 nights, the rest was a mixture of fish chicken and ham. One night it was chicken nuggets...........very poor.
A few other minor annoyances but cant be bothered to list as I will not be returning................
Too much regimentation, not enough relaxation.

Room Tip: Avoid anything below the 3rd floor. No view and insecure [in my opinion] Too easy to climb over bal...

Having stayed at other riu hotels this was a disappointment. On arrival we were all herded together to receive a very rushed talk on the hotel which several important things were missed out on. We were then given a key to the most awful room on the 1st floor which overlooked a roof and nothing else. We immediately complained and were told we could move rooms the next day to the 5th floor which was lovely overlooking the pool and beach. We spoke to several people who had also experienced this. Why do they persist in trying to fob people off with these terrible rooms.

We found most of the staff to be very abrubt apart from the breakfast chef who was very cheerful. We thought the food was superb and always hot, also the dining room was very pleasant. As many other viewers have said, this hotel needs refurbishing throughout to keep its 4 star rating.

There are always lots of sunbeds and you do not need to reserve. The pool area is lovely.
We loved Nerja but would not revisit this hotel.

Room Tip: After our experience book a sea-view room

We have stayed here several times and what makes us return is the relaxing beachside location and the fantastic staff who are the same year after year. Nothing is too much trouble for them and that is quite unusual in hotels these days it seems ! They meet every request with a 'of course' and they are so kind and genuinely friendly. I would say the rooms are a little 'tired' and need updating, but they are quiet, with plenty of storage space, and it is lovely to fall asleep to the sound of the waves-we always leave the window open !
Breakfasts are great- plentiful and varied with loads of fresh fruit. Shame the coffee is not so good ( in a country where the coffee is usually fantastic wherever you go) and the juice is rather watery, and not freshly squeezed, something one might expect in a 4 star establishment. Dinners can be a little disappointing and monotonous. Some nights, when there is a carvery or Andalucian theme, they are fine.... Other nights one is left craving more flavour and variety. I'm not sure all the vegetables are fresh, and the salads are a bit predictable.

The gardens of the hotel are lovely. We tend not to sit in the hotel lounge- the entertainment is noisy, and the drinks expensive. However, Nerja is full of charming bars and cafes to spend the evening in, and it's a lovely town simply to enjoy strolling round. Recommendations : Cafe Anahi, Restaurant Pepe Rico, Miralmar cafe, cafe Jamaica, to name just a few !

I was a bit worried about the mixed reviews on this hotel. But when we arrived we were very impressed with the spacious reception area, plenty of space and armchairs to relax on. The food was absolutely fabulous and we are currently trying lose the few pounds we gained there. The room was spacious and very clean. We did not have a view of the sea from our balcony but feel that we could have asked for another room without it being a problem. We had unpacked some of our things and then did not want to move. There is a gate from the pool area, which is also spacious, which gives access to the beach. The restaurant staff were excellent and very friendly. Not quite so friendly on the reception desk but I would not have a specific complaint about them. We stayed for a week and charged any drinks or snacks on the room and were very surprised when we checked out as we thought it would have cost more. Try to have lunch/snack in the Belle Roma which is in a cul de sac behind the Balcon and Church area. We found all the restaurants opp the Monica were v.good value. There is a 15 min walk to a bus which takes you to Frigliana for €1. Do not buy a return ticket as it seems it does not work and you have to buy a new ticket on the way back. Definitely recommend this hotel and Nerje in general.

Room Tip: Just ask for a change of room if you want a room with a view. We did not try the spa.

Having read all the reviews before we booked this holiday, we were disappointed that it did not live up to expectation. Started off badly when we were herded together in reception on arrival where were shouted at by a receptionist about codes for gates and times for breakfast etc. This could all have been mentioned in the hand out given on check in. Next problem was the room not being ready and we had to wait another 45 minutes to get into that. Granted they did give us a token for a drink from the pool bar, but only one so that we had to fork out for the other drink.
When we eventually got into our room it was like an oven and the thermostat on the 'air conditioning' controller was clicking on at approx. 25oC. This was the lowest temperature we could get the room to. Having complained to the reception who told us that they controlled the setting temperature,we then went to the Thomson rep who admitted that he had already had 11 complaints in the one day, he then told us that he could do nothing about the air conditioning as that was controlled by the hotel management!
We put up with this for a few days, but found it almost unbearable at night as the air conditioning was switched off at 11.00pm and by the time we got up in the morning the room temperature was approx. 27oc. We then complained to the under Manager of the hotel who told us that they did not control the temperature setting!!!!!!!!!!! Somebody obviously not telling the truth!!!!!!!!This really spoiled the holiday for us.
Although we could not fault the food or the general cleanliness of the hotel we felt that it needed an update and was beginning to look a bit tired. The hotel hand-out gave us some information about sunbeds etc and mentioned mattresses for the sunbeds, but we never managed to find any or see any or beds with mattresses on them.
The other problem was the safe on the floor of the wardrobe...........this involved almost lying down to use this facility... not the easiest of things to use.
Having been to many other Riu Hotels we found this to be one which we would not readily return to.

We have been to this hotel three times , it is perfect in every way . We have never been to a hotel in such a great location , being a RIU hotel you get exactly what you expect , first class service friendly staff and an super clean hotel , true the hotel could do with a little up-dating but that is being to critical . Food was great ,pool area lovely and very near to one of the best Spanish villages on the Costa Del Sol. All in all we would recommend this hotel to everyone , in fact we have and our friends are also of the same opinion . Book this hotel early it is very popular with good reason

Room Tip: Try and book a sea view
