We have stayed here several times and what makes us return is the relaxing beachside location and the fantastic staff who are the same year after year. Nothing is too much trouble for them and that is quite unusual in hotels these days it seems ! They meet every request with a 'of course' and they are so kind and genuinely friendly. I would say the rooms are a little 'tired' and need updating, but they are quiet, with plenty of storage space, and it is lovely to fall asleep to the sound of the waves-we always leave the window open !
Breakfasts are great- plentiful and varied with loads of fresh fruit. Shame the coffee is not so good ( in a country where the coffee is usually fantastic wherever you go) and the juice is rather watery, and not freshly squeezed, something one might expect in a 4 star establishment. Dinners can be a little disappointing and monotonous. Some nights, when there is a carvery or Andalucian theme, they are fine.... Other nights one is left craving more flavour and variety. I'm not sure all the vegetables are fresh, and the salads are a bit predictable.

The gardens of the hotel are lovely. We tend not to sit in the hotel lounge- the entertainment is noisy, and the drinks expensive. However, Nerja is full of charming bars and cafes to spend the evening in, and it's a lovely town simply to enjoy strolling round. Recommendations : Cafe Anahi, Restaurant Pepe Rico, Miralmar cafe, cafe Jamaica, to name just a few !

I was a bit worried about the mixed reviews on this hotel. But when we arrived we were very impressed with the spacious reception area, plenty of space and armchairs to relax on. The food was absolutely fabulous and we are currently trying lose the few pounds we gained there. The room was spacious and very clean. We did not have a view of the sea from our balcony but feel that we could have asked for another room without it being a problem. We had unpacked some of our things and then did not want to move. There is a gate from the pool area, which is also spacious, which gives access to the beach. The restaurant staff were excellent and very friendly. Not quite so friendly on the reception desk but I would not have a specific complaint about them. We stayed for a week and charged any drinks or snacks on the room and were very surprised when we checked out as we thought it would have cost more. Try to have lunch/snack in the Belle Roma which is in a cul de sac behind the Balcon and Church area. We found all the restaurants opp the Monica were v.good value. There is a 15 min walk to a bus which takes you to Frigliana for €1. Do not buy a return ticket as it seems it does not work and you have to buy a new ticket on the way back. Definitely recommend this hotel and Nerje in general.

Room Tip: Just ask for a change of room if you want a room with a view. We did not try the spa.

Having read all the reviews before we booked this holiday, we were disappointed that it did not live up to expectation. Started off badly when we were herded together in reception on arrival where were shouted at by a receptionist about codes for gates and times for breakfast etc. This could all have been mentioned in the hand out given on check in. Next problem was the room not being ready and we had to wait another 45 minutes to get into that. Granted they did give us a token for a drink from the pool bar, but only one so that we had to fork out for the other drink.
When we eventually got into our room it was like an oven and the thermostat on the 'air conditioning' controller was clicking on at approx. 25oC. This was the lowest temperature we could get the room to. Having complained to the reception who told us that they controlled the setting temperature,we then went to the Thomson rep who admitted that he had already had 11 complaints in the one day, he then told us that he could do nothing about the air conditioning as that was controlled by the hotel management!
We put up with this for a few days, but found it almost unbearable at night as the air conditioning was switched off at 11.00pm and by the time we got up in the morning the room temperature was approx. 27oc. We then complained to the under Manager of the hotel who told us that they did not control the temperature setting!!!!!!!!!!! Somebody obviously not telling the truth!!!!!!!!This really spoiled the holiday for us.
Although we could not fault the food or the general cleanliness of the hotel we felt that it needed an update and was beginning to look a bit tired. The hotel hand-out gave us some information about sunbeds etc and mentioned mattresses for the sunbeds, but we never managed to find any or see any or beds with mattresses on them.
The other problem was the safe on the floor of the wardrobe...........this involved almost lying down to use this facility... not the easiest of things to use.
Having been to many other Riu Hotels we found this to be one which we would not readily return to.

We have been to this hotel three times , it is perfect in every way . We have never been to a hotel in such a great location , being a RIU hotel you get exactly what you expect , first class service friendly staff and an super clean hotel , true the hotel could do with a little up-dating but that is being to critical . Food was great ,pool area lovely and very near to one of the best Spanish villages on the Costa Del Sol. All in all we would recommend this hotel to everyone , in fact we have and our friends are also of the same opinion . Book this hotel early it is very popular with good reason

Room Tip: Try and book a sea view

Have just been to the Riu Monica for ten nights and found the hotel to have a brilliant location,
on the beach at one side and plenty bars just outside the hotel main door at the other side of the
building. There was a good selection of food at both breakfast and dinner and you would have to be a real picky eater if you could not find something you like, the eggs were also perfect,
although some find them a problem, i can't imagine why! Most of the staff were fine, sometimes
at reception the answers could be a bit sharp but not the end of the world. I found the following
two problems a real annoyance. The room safe, what plonker decided to locate it on the floor,
this has to be ill thought out, we are not old but i can see a lot of older guests having fun getting
stuff from the safe. The worst problem was without doubt the AIR CON, or i should say the lack
of it! This has to be a joke of a system. It was hot when we were there and it seems to be set
about 27 degrees, not good. Trying to sleep can be tricky, so we had to open the balcony door
at night to let some cooler air in. For a four star hotel that is not on in my opinion. We did complain, first to the Thomson rep and then to a member of the management team, who said
it must be broken, just goes to show how much he knows about the workings of the system!
We were not the only people to be unhappy with the Air Con. With this in mind it is a great pity
that unless the porblem can be fixed so that individual control can be achieved i will not return.

Room Tip: Try and get one where the air con works to your own desired temp...

Stayed at The Riu Monica for a week in September booked on a package with a tour operator. Experience was better than we were expecting. Cleanliness of room and public areas was top notch. Room had lovely view, was very spacious and with a balcony that was of a useful size. The pool was warm, no shortage of umbrellas and several areas available to sunbathe or sit in the shade. The location just behind the beach was perfect. The Riu is in a quiet location yet easily walkable into the old town of Nerja. Despite having half board we chose to eat out most nights because we don't like the canteen/buffet style way of eating. However the food was good and typical of this style of restaurant. We would certainly go back again.

Room Tip: Stay on first floor or above. Lower floors have balconies that are accasible from the gardens.

excellent hotel with great staff especially the very helpful Assistant Manager named Richard.
The restuarant food is typically Riu-excellent quality with plenty of choice-its a serve yourself
buffet with plenty of show cooking -constantly replenished.
The bedroom had a great sea view and the Maid was faultless with cleaning & towel &sheet
changing. We(older couple) stayed 2 weeks and can understand why the largely British guests
keep coming back year after year.
I had my wallet stolen at Malaga Airport when we arrived loosing all my cash, credit cards &
driving licence-total strangers in the hotel donated 100 Euros to help us out-the Thomson Rep
was worse than useless however-probably good at selling trips!!!

Room Tip: Higher floors (3 or above) odd number rooms have sea &pool view
