“On the top of Jaen”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

We spent one night in a spacious 3bed room with a huge bath room and a separate WC. The view was amazing. Our room was next to the suite where General de Gaulle once slept...There is not much to do, you can visit the old castle, take a swim in the outside pool or eat in the excellent restaurant of the hotel. We had a little bit of a "Shining" feeling, the hotel is very big, long corridors and large empty spaces. Nevertheless our stay was a special experience, in particular the food was very good.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is not above the kitchen.

We stayed at this Hotel for 2 nights at the end of our stay in Spain and have been to a number of Parador hotels in the past. We found the location stunning with amazing views. The standard double room room we had was comfortable, however a bit dated. Like most of the old Paradors noise does echo down the corridors and you can hear people in the next rooms and above you.
The public areas are amazing especially the lounge area and dining room and worth a visit on their own. We didn't have breakfast after having them at other Paradors decided not to, not really found any good ones at any of the Paradors yet. We did have our evening meals and found the choice excellent with the set menu from 26 Euros for 2 courses. We found the service good and helpful throughout the hotel. The Hotel pool was a bonus although do take insect repellant with you, lots of greenary around.
We did drive into Jaen and had a look round, it is worth a visit especially the Cathedral and lunch was good at one of the local bars.
Would rate the rooms at 4 star and the public areas and views at 6 stars hence the 5 star rating and is worth a 2 night stay.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms overlooking the mountains are good.

This Parador stands on the hill of St. Catalina and can be seen for miles as you approach Jaen from almost any direction. It is quite stunning and has been sympathetically built to match the moorish castle next door. This was a wedding anniversary treat and so we thought it worth the extra money to stay somewhere so magnificent when we could have stayed in Jaen for much less. Our room was at the back but the views of the hills behind were very impressive and each balcony has a 'map' of the hills naming them and a brief description of each one.
The restaurant is an impressive room with huge lanterns hanging from the vaulted ceiling. However, the food was very disappointing and did not live up to expectations. The tuna was very salty and the main course did not have any vegetable accompaniment, nor was there an option to order more on the menu. We took a package that included breakfast but wish we had not bothered as it was quite poor and was certainly not worth the price even at a discount. The coffee machine did not work properly - offering only expresso or decaf and I had to wait a long time for hot water for tea and then there was no milk! We have had much better breakfast selections at cheaper hotels.
The staff were not very helpful either. We asked about getting into Jaen and were told the best way was by taxi at a cost of approx 25 euros return as it was along drive. Taking that into consideration we opted to remain at the Parador for the afternoon and although the pool area was very relaxing, we had to postpone out sightseeing until the following day. When we drove into Jaen the next day, there was a road leading to the cathederal (which was well signed) at the bottom of the hill going up to the Parador and also a bus into town so the 'long drive' was in fact, incaccurate. All in all I felt that the attitude was that you were there and unlikely to trek into town so they could serve anything at any price! Stay for the location and the relaxing ambience but consider going into Jaen for dinner - hence the rating.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the back as they have balconies and great views of the mountains.

I adored the location of the Parador, the old-world feel - like we were staying in an old castle, although the building (incredibly) was built in 1969. The public areas, dining room, etc, are vast and very impressive. The bedroom was spacious, and the bathroom good. Food prices in the restaurant were not astronomical, and the portions HUGE (too much really!), and bar prices also very reasonable indeed. All staff encountered were polite, and very helpful and friendly. Having a lovely swimming pool was a huge bonus, and so in terms of value for money the Parador was excellent.

Our only problems were that on our return to the room (close to 1am) there was a dreadful smell of sewerage coming through the air conditioning system just inside the door. We alerted the night manager who offered to move us to another room, but as it was so late, and our luggage all unpacked, we declined. We switched off the a/c and opened the balcony doors, but as there is no fan in the room it was quite warm, so it was not the best night’s sleep. Added to that, we had a family of 5 in the next room, who woke us quite early with their shouting and running (loudly) around the room.

Breakfast was good. Plenty of choice, although a few of the “hot” dishes could have been warmer. But overall great choice.

On check-out it appeared that the night manager had alerted maintenance of the smell problem (which had disappeared by morning), so that was being investigated. No compensation or discount was offered for our inconvenience (and lack of sleep), but I feel a small discount should have been offered as a goodwill gesture. Also I would urge the hotel to not put families with young children in rooms adjoining “older” couples with no children.

Overall, adored the hotel, but didn’t have the best night’s sleep, which does detract from the experience!

We stayed here in June 2012 for a night, and it was marvellous. It is a beautiful, ancient place, and the views from our balcony were superb. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent, as was breakfast. The overall ambience was delightful, and the staff helpful. The Castillo is high on a hillside, which adds to the magical feeling of the place..... Loved it!

Stayed here August 2-3-4, 2012 and left on the 5th. Staff were exceptional and everyone was efficient and very hospitable. Some of the staff were on vacation during the high season but it seemed that everyone pitched in and not a step was missed in providing great service. Even if you only stay for a few days you owe it to yourself to spend a few days/nights here and imagine what it was like hundreds of years ago. It should be noted that without a car you must take taxis to and from the town of Jaen, cost is from 7 to 10 Euros each way depending upon how far in to the city you go. Note also that The WI-FI does NOT work in the rooms, you must use it in other areas but not the room. The A.C. was a tad on the weak side but not bad for a 500 or 600 year old building. Breakfast ran 36 Euros for 2 and a FULL dinner 80. We went in to the town and found the cathedral and surrounding area interesting and the citizenry pleasant. One of the best paradors we have stayed at, a real treat! My wife said to mention also the wonderful pool and the service provided there as well.

Room Tip: We went to the town of Baeza yesterday, Saturday, a mildly interesting place but no taxi service, yo...

Excellent. The man who said it is like staying in a castle was so right, because it is a castle! Huge and spectacular with fabulous views this is a great place to stay, eat and drink. The lounge is incredible, sitting in this massive stone hall with a brandy after an excellent meal is an experience to savour. Touring a series of Paradors is something different. Recommended.
