DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Resort & Spa Reserva del Higueron
Ranked #11 of 37 Hotels in Fuengirola
Reviewed July 22, 2013

Recently returned from a weeks holiday at the THB Reserva Del Hiqueron with my daughter (she's in her 20's).
I'd read loads of reviews before I left so I was fairly sure I knew what I was going to get. Sure enough the hotel is very contemporary and lacking of chintz, but that suited us fine. Spent most of the day around the infinity pool, sipping cocktails and cooking nicely.
Would definitely recommend the hotel to those that I know that like to chill. I'd also like to recommend the Tapas restaurant that is next door to the hotel (I believe the hotel recently acquired it). The food there is fantastic and the prices are very reasonable considering the surroundings.
A car is good to have but you can quite easily get to the local beach or to Malaga/Marbella etc using the train if you make the effort.

Room Tip: We had a standard Twin - - High floors offer the best views, but all rooms are absolutely fine

Our family of 4 stayed one great week in this hotel. We enjoyed the quiet pools, including the fabulous rooftop Infinity Pool. We loved the Al Rolo restaurant with interesting tapas, wine and good service. We used the spa, the fitness room, we had massage by two excellent physiotherapists, we played tennis and paddletennis. We enjoyed the buffet breakfasts, we nipped to the free coffee and wine in the reception area as we passed, and we loved the spacious and modern rooms.
The atmosphere is very relaxing.

We had a car that we used to see Mijas, Marbella, go to the Corte Ingles shopping center. We walked to the beach the first day, but found life so relaxing at THB that we spent most of our time there.

A great holiday!

Room Tip: Choose rooms with sea-view, they also face the pools, tennis cours and the rolling hills towards Fue...

Compared to the usual scenes of chaos at other hotels (fighting over sun beds, fighting over meals, hustle and bustle etc etc) this hotel was a haven peace, all this in the middle of July.
Having said the infinity pool at the top of the hotel can be busy. But we found no problem settling down on one of the decadent sun beds and just relaxing for our 5 day break. Not for any one with mobility problems.Hotel is like staying at an art gallery.

Adult only hotel attached to energetic sports club so if relaxing is not your scene have ago a padddle tennis which looks good fun.

Our room 432 over looked the sea (although at a distance)but got an excellent view of swimming pool and the tennis courts and hills.

Toptip: Don't make the mistake of lastminute's standard return transfer it took 2 hours. Get a cab 30 euros approx and don't be a skinflint.Get there in 20 mins and enjoy.

Room Tip: Hotel divided into two buildings evens and odds, So evens have sea-view and mountain view as do the...

My boyfriend and I have just returned from an eight-night stay at the Reserva hotel and what an amazing holiday it was. We were really worried after reading some reviews but I am here to put your mind at ease.

HOTEL

The hotel itself is beautiful – clean, spacious rooms that came with a safe, power shower, bath, lots of plug sockets, hair dryer, storage space and fridge. There were 4 pools (inc. an indoor one) but we spent most of our time at the infinity pool with beautiful views of the beach and surrounding gated community. We got to the pool at about 10am and it started filling up after that (you can’t actually get up to the pool until then). Lovely great big beds, in and out of the shade, but admittedly water was v. cold and sometimes it got quite windy – but that’s good for me if I lie in the sun all day and get hot.

We had pre paid breakfast and you couldn't go wrong. So much choice from fry up, fresh made omelettes, fresh fruit, cereal, ham and cheese – you name it. We had dinner once on our first night in the buffet restaurant and was quite disappointed at the luke warm efforts of the dishes but have been told by other guests that the tapas restaurant Al Rolo is fantastic.

LOCATION AND TRANSPORT

YOU DO NOT NEED A HIRE CAR!! My partner and I were really worried about the adamancy that you needed a car for transportation, but as we both wanted to drink in the evenings, this wasn’t an option. The transport links are great! We got the train from the airport (Aeropuerto) straight to the local train station (Carvajal) which took about 26 minutes and was only €1, 95 each.

Yes, the hill is VERY steep and we never attempted to walk up it but the hotel offers a free shuttle train that goes every hour (minus siesta time) up until seven. They could have done with having a late night shuttle service but there is a taxi rank at the bottom of the hill and was about €8,50 for the evening rate. The shuttle train can take you to the station, the beach and up the hill to the local supermarket and in the evening we used to get the last shuttle at 7pm then get the train into one of the busier towns. This was amazing, at €3,40 return each you couldn’t go wrong and took you direct to the centre of Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmadena in no time at all! In the end we just used to get a single fare to Fuengirola and walk the 3 ½ mile walk back along the beach as it was such lovely evenings.

You can hire out this cute electric tandem cars from the hotel (Renault Twizzy’s) at €25 for 2 hours or €40 for the day and it was BRILLIANT – we loved zipping up and down the coast and it was a fun alternative if we didn’t fancy lying about all day.

SURROUNDING AREAS

You really are near to things - it’s so easy to get into the main towns and once you get there you kind of thank the heavens that you aren’t staying in some of the resorts there and it was always nice to come back to a romantic, quiet hideout in the mountains. The food in Fuengirola is fab (there is a massive crossroads of restaurants about a 4 minute walk from the station) and Benalmadena Marina is supposed to be the best in the world. You’re really spoilt for choice and it was such a fantastic holiday. Luxury, class and affordability in one package. The beaches were gorgeous and sandy and the seafood around the hotel was beautiful (try a restaurant at the nearest beach called Los Marinos Paco – best shellfish I’ve ever had.)

Highly recommend! Sorry for the long review – but felt strongly about writing up one that doesn’t scare you like it did for us!

We booked a deal with voyage prive and it was fantastic value for money. After having read quite a few reviews we decided to hire a car and did not regret it. The area is beautiful but from the outside the hotel does not look like much. It is very modern and lacks character but we certainly liked it once we knew our way round. The walk to the beach down the hill is doable but the train certainly helps. We stayed for 5 nights and my criticism is dinner. We booked half board but the restaurant is certainly not vegetarian/allergy sufferer friendly. I am a veggie and my friend has a fish allergy. On the buffet however there are about 4 tongs for 10 dishes. So unless you are there first someone else (who would not be considerate) would have used one tong for everything. It was pretty disgusting at times. Breakfast is fine, you have to queue for coffee but when you get a chance to sit outside it is a pretty good view and atmosphere. They won't always let you sit outside but it is worth the wait. I emailed the hotel beforehand to ask for a room on a higher floor for better views. They said they would try but it didn't happen. Staff are mostly nice even if mostly not very helpful. If you want any excursions make sure you book them yourself. I would highly recommend a trip to Puerto Banos, just a little further down from Marbella (to see how the other half live) and Gibraltar to see the monkeys (driving is easiest - park on Spanish side and walk across). The hotel really was the perfect base. The infinity pool was nice, we never had any issue to get a bed, but that was late June. He room layout is certainly very open, but we thought it was quite funny. At the end of the day you can arrange yourselves and if you share a room with somebody that really shouldn't be an issue. The sangria at the infinity pool is lovely. Ok, drinks are not cheap but you really don't pay over the top considering it is a 4 star hotel. The majority of guests are couples and it is lovely not having kids running around. The gym is pretty decent and there were also activities going on around the tennis court which was lovely to see ( we saw a dance event). We didn't even get a chance to try the tennis courts, but they always looked busy. All in all we had a great time, it is certainly a quirky place, but there is lots to explore. If you do get a car, don't bother with the hotel's multi storey, it is always full, it is so easy to park in the spa just round the corner.
I would certainly go there again but would probably venture out for dinner more. In fact I want to go back now...

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor level with sea view

Beautiful hotel, very well layed out and quirky rooms. Had a seaview room, and the view was spectacular. Recommend that you take this option as the otherside of the hotel face a road and private villa.

Infinity pool is amazing and the poolside beds are very comfy. It costs 15 € to get into the middle of fuengirola which is worth a visit

Very nice boutique style hotel but a little out of the way ( you need a car or taxi to climb the massive hill to the beach) food was a bit samey after a few days though was always fresh and plenty of it. There are no activities at night and hotel drinks are a bit on the steep side so we found ourselves driving in to town each night, the nearest being Fuengirola about 3 miles down the massive hill. The hotel is very clean quiet and relaxing. Oh beware of the mini bar prices look for the price list before you use it, the hotel is linked to a sporting club and one of the pools and its sun beds are only for use by club members. We found the clientele around 20% British with no children which suited us. We recommend hiring a car (we used Malagacar they have voucher codes and do airport pick up, just take your own sat nav & take the €4/day Cdw use the hotel underground car parking.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view the other side of the hotel faces a road. Lifts to all floors are good so go for...
