Hotel Monarque Torreblanca

The hotel dates from a different era of UK package holidays and it is a reflection on our raised expectations that we now consider the hotel past its sell by date. The hotel is spotlessly clean and staff are all very helpful. After arriving at 3am (Monarch Airlines aaaaaghhhh !!!!) we were met by the night porter Jerome who hurried us in and took our bags. He then ushered us to the dining room where the chef had left a very nice cold salad for us !!!. Room was clean and functional but not what we would now consider 4 stars. Food in the restaurant was really good with a wide choice and very well cooked and Antonio was helpful and always cheerful. Overall a good stay with my wife and grandson who made full use of the free wifi.

Room Tip: Ask for sea views for a cooling breeze.

Stayed for a five day break 20-25th Sept,we basically wanted some sunshine and relaxation.Knew that transfer from Malaga would be easy, cheap and painless and it was.Hotel location good for beach, bars and along the prom.Rooms were dated, but clean, spacious, endless hot water, efficient aircon and good sea view.Service was helpful and friendly, food good and pools/gardens very well kept, quiet and relaxing, just what we wanted.
Overall in our long experience, the hotel offered a good value short break in the sunshine!

Room Tip: Higher floors offer better sea views.

My husband and I stayed here from 29th sept to 6th Oct 2012. I agree with most of the comments about it being dated but this didnt bother us as our room was spacious, clean and had a sea view. We were worried about the food after seeing previous comments but we were pleasantly surprised - the variety and quality was very good - we have had worse believe me!
The train from the airport is great and so easy and cheap to use - right next to the hotel. I would never book transfers to this area if I revisisted. Biggest let down for us re this hotel was the "entertainment" - really awful. We never stayed a single night in the entertainment room which was bas really as we were all inclusive. Aimed at the Spanish visitors, ballroom dancing type music up until tennish them normally some singer or bingo - really poor. Even a bit of karaoke or some well known European music before the act came on would have gee'ed everyone up a bit. Luckily there are quite a few bars within walking distance. It is a nice area - peaceful but stuff close by if you want it. We went to a lovley Thai restaurant on our last night for a change - visit if you get the chance. Begins with a Q and is between a Mexican/Indian/Italian and a Balti curry house.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor and see view - we were on 8th floor and the view was lovley

We visited this hotel at the end of September wish we hadnt. The rooms were clean and spacious but very dated. The food was lousy and the entertainment was dire in fact the male of the duo actually stopped the female singing one song she was that bad. As in a previous review we met some lovely people which made our holiday if it hadnt been for them we would have looked for a flight home sooner. All Inc drinks are at half measures not a good experience especially as it was quite expensive for a weeks stay. We also witnessed outsiders coming in acting suspiciously and two english police officers who were on holiday had to alert staff to remove them. We were also sat on the terrace one evening and a RAT run across the railings. My advice would be to stay clear and book elsewhere.

Just got back from a weeks All Inclusive stay at this 4* hotel.

Loved the location in Torreblanca. It’s a 30 minute walk along the promenade or a quick convenient train trip to Fuengirola. Torreblanca is a nice quiet resort with nice little restaurants/bars along the sea front and a lovely stretch of beach with reasonably priced (and very comfy) sun loungers! Personally we preferred this to Fuengerola but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

As others have said I’d use the train rather than a transfer as ours took around 90 mins and it would be a couple of euros on the train and much quicker. The station is easily visible when you leave Malaga airport and is on the doorstep of the hotel.

Fuengerola is easily reached for around 1.65E on the train that’s just outside of the hotel. Mijas is also easily reached by the train to Fuengerola and then a bus to Mijas which was about E1.45 and definitely worth a visit. In the other direction is Benalmadena but I believe its better to get the bus here.

And now on to the hotel...!

Well firstly it’s not 4* and is scraping in the 3* class in my opinion. If you can get this for the same price as a 3* hotel and that’s your expectation then it should be fine. We were expecting 4* that was comparable to other AI hotels we have stayed in and it didn’t come close!

I think it’s fair to say this hotel caters for more senior guests and primarily spanish guests too it does appear quite dated however I can live with this and we liked the atmosphere the spanish guests created!

The rooms are pretty quaint but just appear dilapidated with holes in bed covers/sheets, damaged furniture, holes in walls, old showers etc.

The comments about the 2 lifts are true, they look like tower block lifts, they're tiny and they're slow and busy.

The staff in the restaurants are on the whole pretty friendly. The receptionists were fine with us. Some bar staff were nice but the most senior looking man in the main bar and the lady at the pool bar looked like they resented every drink that they served you! We thought they just disliked us but reading the reviews it feels like a common theme. A lot of questions are just met with a flat and rude ‘no’.

The hotel has recently started to offer All Inclusive and this is pretty apparent in their treatment of it and an almost visible reluctance to offer it. It says there are snacks during the day but you’d struggle to know and all we managed to find was sweet bread cakes with sugar or nuts on top. Anything else you pay a reduced rate for what you'd receive as standard elsewhere.

In terms of the main meals, we were here for a week and so they did the job but I wouldn’t have liked another week. Breakfast was mainly breads, not great quality fruits, limited cereals and the elements of an english breakfast but it wasn’t great or very warm.

For lunch and dinner, there are a lot of breads, salads and pasta, potatoes/chips but the main meat/fish element is pretty limited to one main choice e.g a pork joint and then some chicken legs or other meat in sauce. The desserts were very similar but the same pretty much every day for lunch and dinner. We didn’t struggle with the meals and actually enjoyed a lot of them but the quality isn’t great, it feels cheap, it’s very limited and the temperature is frequently luke warm.

In terms of drinks they do have hot drinks, branded soft drinks, San Miguel, local vodka, brandy etc. Anything like Malibu, Baileys there isn’t a local alternative as in other AI hotels, you just pay half price for the branded stuff but this price varies every time.

There are 2 pools, the one near the bar is bigger but always crowded and there is a smaller one further down. The sun loungers at the bottom pool are awful, pretty dirty and sagging so badly you can feel the metal bars through them.

A courtesy room was available for us on our departure as we had a late flight but it was pretty grim. I pity anyone who ever had to stay in the this room as it’s fair to say it would struggle to get a 2* rating. This room just seemed to sum up the general lack of care and consideration for guests as it hadn't been cleaned and was full of dirty towels and an overflowing waste bin.

On the plus side, the views from most of the rooms are lovely and most people will get a sea view and mountain room. Ask for a balcony that gets sun in the afternoon as we really liked this.

Also the wine is not bad at all and you get as many half bottles as you like with dinner, water also comes in plastic bottles which is good to take away.

We really liked the location close to the beach and right by the train station and 5 mins to small supermarket.

I probably wouldn’t recommend this hotel unless you can get a good price for B&B and go expecting 3* standards.

I'd personally avoid the All Inclusive option unless it’s a great deal as it’s not what we have come to expect as it’s pretty limited, pretty poor quality and you have to pay for certain snacks and drinks. It was ok for a week but we feel we overpaid for what we received.

My general feeling about this hotel is that it’s old and delapidated and that there is a general lack of care across all areas. The staff look unhappy and grumpy, the food is cheap and average and the place looks a bit worn out.

Saying all that we made the best of it and still had a fab holiday and liked Torreblanca so if you get a good deal and go with realistic expectations I think it’s possible to have a good holiday here too.

Room Tip: Ask for a low floor if you have mobility issues or prepare to wait for the lifts.

I stayed here with my 2 friends for 5 nights from 3-8 October. I found the hotel very clean, rooms spacious, good variety of food - you could always find something to eat! We were on an all-inclusive basis & the wine, beer & spirits were all very drinkable.staff at the hotel were very friendly & accommodating! Very central location with easy access to train station allowing for cheap airport transfers! Would definitely return to this hotel & would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone! please ignore any negitive reviews as it is great value for money!
