Owner description: The Moorish fortress or Alcazar rises above the Puerta de Sevilla, forming an almost impregnable defensive complex - It underwent major alterations in the 14th and 15th centuries. - Restoration work carried out between 1973 and 1975 included the refurbishing of several sections as venues for staging cultural events. - Keep: the tower is solid up to the level of the courtyard and its bossed ashlars remain intact. - Tower of Gold: this tower provides a beautiful view over Carmona. - Prisoners' Hall: this is all that remains of the palace that stood inside the Alcazar. - Patio of Cisterns: in the middle of this courtyard there is an underground cistern excavated in the rock and featuring six skylights.

“Worth a look”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

Carmona itself is a place you must try to visit; typical Andalusian white painted houses, narrow cobbled streets, small churches and then this incredible fort or at least the remains of it. The sheer scale of it blows you away, you ask yourself, how did they build this? Which brings me round to the lack of an audio guide, it would help. But don't let it put you off, its cheap to see the place and our money goes towards further preservation work, the views of both the new and old town from the tower make it all worth while. By the way we had lunch afterwards at the Almazara de Cormona...the best.

“Worth a stopover”
Reviewed February 10, 2014

If you are travelling between Seville and Corboda, Carmona is definitely worth a stopover. And in Carmona the Alcazar/fortress should be your first port of call. There is normally a small entrance fee but we arrived on a Monday, when entry is free. The attendant was helpful and informative. The fort is full of history and this is well explained on site and in our free tourist guide. The views over the old town, with no shortage of white buildings, are wonderful. There are quite a few steps, some a bit uneven, and it is very exposed, so scrambling around the site in the heat of summer may not be so much fun.

“Very interesting”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

Staff in the tourist information were great, I got the guide book rather than go on the tour. It's very interesting, and worth a visit.

“A wonderful building”

Stunning and well worth the trip. Rather a lot of steps to climb if you have an elderly person in your group.

“Ruins”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

amazing views of the entire city and the countryside; interesting many hundred-years-old architecture. We could walk around the old fortress and learn about the history of Carmona. The arches were a great photo op and the city was not infiltrated with thousands of tourists --It was a great place to see "real" culture.
