We were lucky enough to visit on a Sunday when admission is free. However, it would certainly be worth paying to see the displays in this gem of a museum. The display of Roman glass was beautiful with so many large and unbroken exhibits. I was surprised at the range and quality on show with pieces from pre history through to the modern era. Also the museum is air conditioned so a welcome relief from the hot sun even in April!

Whenever I go to Antequera, I always visit the Municipal Museum because I enjoy seeing art. Seeing the Ephebe is the highlight of my visit because this is really a very beautiful statue and the best conserved statue of its kind in Europe.

The bronze statue of the boy from 13C BC is amazing, and lots of Morr and Roman stones. Too many paintings for me personally, but for €3, its well worth a half hours browse.

The Municipal Museum is a large museum full of art. At the ground floor one can see Roman art. The most precious exhibit is the Ephebe, which is the bronze statue of a naked youth. There are only six of these statues in the world and this is the best preserved. It is really the star of the museum. However it is hard to find in the museum because it is hidden by a large panel in the room where one can see the archaeological remains below. The salons over the first floor have many works of art, many of them with religious themes. The only handicap of this museum is that it does not allow non-flash photography.

One floor is pre-history, one Roman, one about the Catholic reformation, and one about local artists. In each case the displays are rich and show just how much history is in the fabric of Antequera at the heart of Andalucía. The only surprising thing is the almost complete absence of anything Moorish from the hundreds of years the Muslim's occupied the city and surrounding area - instead lots and lots of Catholic religious paintings and statues. But that is how history gets written everywhere!
