“Pleasant historic hotel”
Reviewed January 18, 2014 via mobile

We stayed here 1 night. It's a pleasant hotel, we had a spacious room at the end of a corridor, overlooking the straight of Gibraltar. The beds were okay, bathroom a bit old fashioned: a narrow tub to step in to take a shower.
The food in the buffet restaurant was good.

Situated near to the ferry port of Algeciras, the hotel overlooks Gibraltar Bay. During the 2nd World War German spies stayed there to observe the comings and goings of Allied shipping. As you sit at the bar you could imagine the scene. Easy check in. Friendly & helpful staff. Dined out so couldn't comment on the evening meal, but if the breakfast was anything to go by there wouldn't be any complaints. Room was clean and had a good sized bath.

From the moment that we arrived for our 9 night stay we received the most friendly & welcoming service from all the staff.
Special mention to the Dining room team & kitchen. Whilst buffet is not my preferred option we found that the food varied daily with interesting themes such as ‘Romantic Evening’ or ‘Asian Delights’....also the food was always HOT !!
Even though we we do not live very far away, we will come back just to be spoilt every now & then.
Well Done Reina Cristina !!

This hotel is great if you need a place to spend the night before going to Gibraltar or Morocco. We stayed for a week, and it was lovely. The room was very big, the staff was friendly and the food more than acceptable. There was a nice park, a pool and tables out on the terrace. The only problem is that Algeciras is rather boring. The good thing is that it is easy to get around. We visited other towns nearby, and the bus costs next to nothing. If you just want to relax, the hotel is perfect. If you want to see a beautiful city, you should go somewhere else.

Had in lovely relaxing stay in October. Hotel was marvellous, staff were wonderful, helpful, friendly and all spoke several languages. Rooms were really spacious & comfortable including a small fridge. Food was the only thing that let it down slightly, definitely not 4 star. However nobody went hungry! There were not enough staff to cope but they all worked like demons. Feel this is management problem. We were also very fortunate with the weather so took advantage of the pool area . Again a very enjoyable experience. Hotel is very well situated within its own grounds but a tidy step from the shops & bars. Took a trip into Gibralter by taxi 25 euro 1 way but there were 4 of us so quite reasonable. My mum is 88 & we were given the loan of a wheelchair for the day by the Tourist Info office there. Apparently they were donated by British Red Cross. It was Godsend. Do not understand the negative reviews on the site as a good time was had by all! Ages of party were 44, 61, 76 & 88 so something for everyone. Would go back in a heartbeat! It was featured on Michael Portillo's railway programme because of its historic origins.

We stayed in this Hotel for 11 nights - 31 October to 11 November. We were warmly welcomed, and found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful, and made us feel very welcome. The hotel is quite old, but a magnificent building, full of character, set in beautiful park like grounds. We used a hire car, so were pleased that there is plenty of parking space close by the hotel, in the grounds. Our room was very nice, quite spacious, on the first floor overlooking the gardens. We had a king-size double bed, two comfortable arm chairs, a small balcony with 2 chairs and a table. AND an electric kettle with some tea and coffee, although mainly herbal teas. Fortunately we brought some tea bags from England. The only criticism with this room (no. 104) was that the wardrobe was quite small, and there was very little drawer space for our small things. We stayed "half-board", enjoyed good meals. the restaurant was very pleasant, and the staff most attentive. There was always a varied selection of food for breakfast and dinner. Evening meals were served from 8 p.m., which was a bit later than we would have liked, but we got used to it. The Spanish are accustomed to eating late, so it was probably normal for them. There is a lovely pool outside, although we did not use it. Also a small indoor pool, and small (very small) gymnasium. Free Wi-Fi is available everywhere in the building. There was entertainment 2 nights each week. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would heartily recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor, overlooking the pool

We stayed at the Globales Reina Cristina for one night - a Tuesday.

We arrived in Algeciras by train and it's about a 10-15 minutes walk.

The hotel is set in extensive grounds which are well looked after and consist of grass, trees and mature shrubs. Some rooms face the sea.

Check-in went smoothly by a male receptionist who spoke good English. The first thing that struck us about the hotel was "Grandeur and Opulence". The hotel is much different from the chain hotels you may stay in. Maybe a little old fashioned in some respects but in the public areas you had the feeling that you had been transported back 50-100 years to a different, slower more civilised time.

We were allocated a room on the first floor. When we opened the bedroom door there was a feeling of being let down. All though clean, the room was rather basic when compared to the public areas. We had two single beds pushed together and a bath in the en-suite room.

The curtains were drawn when we arrived and we opened them to be amazed by a view of Gibraltar in the distance, the Mediterranean a little closer and then the grounds and terrace of the hotel. Wow !

We arrived at 2.30pm and were hungry. Our room card showed that lunch was served from 1pm to 3pm (or the a la carte restaurant from 1pm to 3.30pm). We set off to explore the hotel but there was very little information as to what was available and at what price. Room service was available 24 hours per day with a mark up of around 80% of what you'd pay in the bar.

We asked a member of staff and was told that the buffet lunch was 20 Euros plus drinks. We had already paid for an evening meal so opted for a snack from the bar. 6 Euros for a Ham & Mushroom pizza and 5 Euros for a substantial Pork Baguette with chips a 200Ml Diet Coke was 2 Euros and a Fresh Orange 2.60 Euros. We had this on the terrace.

After travelling from London by train we were in need of a rest so lazed by the pool for a couple of hours.

Everywhere was quiet and we had the feeling that there were only a handful of guests in the hotel.

Dinner is served from 8pm to 10.30pm. There's the a la carte option - but once again no prices or visible menus. We had the buffet option and, at 8pm,were one of the first guests to arrive.

There was soup (Cream of Pulses) plus the salad bar and then main courses (pork, beef stew, fish fingers, bream, paella, shark (not too bad a bit like tuna!), and pasta (undercooked) with Bolognese or macaroni sauces. Then a selection of cakes and ice-creams to finish with.

The food wasn't perfect. The beef stew was really nice but, as mentioned, the pasta was so undercooked as to be almost raw. The waiting staff were attentive and empty plates cleared away quickly. The kitchen staff seemed a little more relaxed and some food items were running out but hardly any checks were made to see what needed replenishing.

We had a peaceful nights sleep but the room had a slight sewage odour in the morning.

Breakfast is served from 7.15am (8am weekends) to 10.30 am (11.00 weekends). There is the usual continental fayre (bread, cheese, croissants, cereals etc) as well as bacon (very streaky), sausage (quite plastic tasting) and fried and scambled eggs.

Our room had a small balcony so we spent a couple of hours on there, in the sun, before catching the ferry to Morocco.

The hotel isn't perfect. Grand in some respects, but it's as if time has forgotten it in others. We've been to cheap and cheerful All Inclusives on the Costa's and this hotel feels like one of these at the buffet meal times but lacks the rowdiness of the cheap beach hotels yet it somehow retains an elegance and leaves you feeling confused as to where you are.

However, if in the area we would return.
