“An old fashioned hotel, in the best possible way”
Reviewed February 14, 2012

The Reina Christina has a long and distinguished history and some famous guests. Its heyday is long past but now it opens its generous heart to the hoi poloi. Make no mistake, this is a real hotel with a fire in the lobby, beautiful grounds with banana palms, a swimming pool, and a good restaurant. The rooms are a little faded, but I think you can forgive them this in view of their undoubted dignity and lack of ply and plastic. Wifi works and staff are helpful (the night manager printed out a perfect copy of our forgotten car documents, and the maitre d' organized a special vegetarian dish to be prepared for me on a buffet evening). A very good stop-over for the Algeciras ferry port, but I think I would consider this hotel for a few days break in the sun, reading, writing, maybe a visit to Gibralter. Good deal on prices when business is quiet. The restaurant seems to be used by local people as well as residents - has to be a good sign. Breakfast buffet one of the best we've met. Location - excellent in its own grounds, Algeciras is what it is.

For choices in Algeciras, this is the one. On a hill, facing the port, a quick 5 - 10 min. taxi ride to port and city central. (Can be walked, 20 -30 minute, from port, but not the easiest to find).

What to expect? Look at the website. It is dated. Overall, the hotel is charmingly dated too. If you can get past that, you will enjoy it. It would be rated 5, by me, if it kept the dated charm, but polished up a bit (somewhat of an oxymoron, I know).

The rooms are standard but reasonably sized, extremely firm mattress (like a rock), limited TV station selection (no English channels), basic bathroom amenities, small bathroom (but separate toilet/bidet area). Service was pleasant at every turn.

Great Breakfast buffet, with a good selection of hot and cold items, served in a white linen setting. Hotel looked to be undergoing refurbishment in areas, which it needs, but for the price, I was pleasantly surprised by the overall grandeur of the hotel. If it were in a major city, it would be much more costly, and could command much more acknowledgement.

The hotel feels like one of glamour gone by. You can imagine a Great Gatsby party here with women decked out in their roaring twenties flappers or people stylishly playing croquet on the lovely grounds. A real pool area, mini golf, gardens, billiards room, what looks to be a smoking room . . . the stuff new hotels don't offer. An era gone by.

For a stop in Algeciras, this is the place. Don't waste your time on a newer hotel. You can get that anywhere. They don't make em like this anymore. Stay here because it is a reasonably priced, well located, nice hotel, or stay here for the trip down memory lane and the historical dated charm!

This will be our 33rdvisit to this hotel and we cannot wait the staff are greay and having been going for so long it is like an extension of your family nothing is of any bother, the food and restaurant staff first class ,paco and his team at reception first class and Miguel and his staff at the bar second to none which makes this hotels wee gem in the very south of Spain.

Our plan was to stay in Algeciras for 2 nights to take the ferry from Tarifa to visit Morocco. People are right about Algeciras it is a very ugly industrial city with nothing to do or see. We were pleasantly surprised arriving at the hotel. The property and the buildings were beautiful. For the price we paid we thought we might be at the wrong hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English. We checked into our room and were surprised at the size of the room. The full size shower was a big plus. We realized when getting in bed though that the sheets were stained. Pretty gross. Other than that one major problem it was a pleasant stay. The breakfast and dinner buffet were both exceptionally nice. They were both an absolute must though because there is nothing around this area to eat.

Room Tip: Room 227 is bigger but we payed the normal rate.

Hotel Reina Cristina is a very historic hotel, in a beautiful building located on a spectacular property over looking the port of Algeciras. Our room was excellent, there is a decent restaurant for dinner, the breakfast buffet is quite good, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Although the hotel is part of a big corporate chain, it does not feel overly "corporate" or cold, probably because the building is so historic. (Many famous people have stayed here, including Winston Churchill during World War II.) Finally, the price was right -- this was one of the most reasonably priced places we stayed anywhere in Spain or Portugal. We have no complaints with the hotel whatsoever, and I would recommend anyone spending the night in Algeciras to stay here. There is little enough else to recommend Algeciras, to be sure, except its proximity to Gibraltar and the ferries to Morocco.

We've just had two nights at the hotel and have had one of the best hotel stays for a long time .From arrival to departure the staff have been wonderful .We had breakfast and dinner and the food was excellent (the scrambled egg is to die for !!) . It was my birthday and when we arrived back to our room there was a chilling bottle of sparkling wine and some fruit - lovely surprise . Our rooms were big twin bedded , two chairs inside and on the balcony a table and two chairs .Bathroom with separate toilet and bidet . It faced the port (saw a spectacular sunset ) the facilies were excellent and the whole hotel was spotless .Having done our homework before we went we knew this was a good base for our planned visit to Gibralter and obviously having a car made sightseeing easier .We hope to return in February .

We went to Gibraltar for the weekend, hotels on Gib seemed tired and overpriced so we found this hotel and SO PLEASED we did. Even though it is about 15mins from Gib it was well worth travelling there.
Reception area has an old worldy charm. The receptionist spoke perfect English.
Our room, as all of them, had a balcony with 2 chairs and table.
Flat screen TV, small but nice to have.
Bathroom had separate toilet and bidet and nicely decorated
Twin bed pushed together, very comfortable.
We sat and had coffee and peice of apple cake in bar (pie expensive 4euros a slice- but delicious)
We took a stroll around the hotel in the evening, very nice surroundings. Lovely
outside patio areas
Breakfast was great, waiter asked if we would like omelette bacon sausage scrambled eggs...freshly cooked and brought to the table. Nice white linen on the table too.
Outside and indoor pool...outside pool now drained but it would be wonderful in summer
Great if travelling to Tangier as ferry very close
Very quiet hotel if your a light sleeper like me...its up on a slight hill and away from traffic.
We paid 74euros with buffet breakfast and wifi is free in rooms
WOULD DEFINATELY STAY AGAIN....GREAT HOTEL
