Having visiting quite a few castles in Europe, this is unique. It is a wild mix of styles, and the king has collected an arsenal of weapons. Make sure you take the extended tour to see the rooms upstairs. There are some untypical Klimt-paintings, too.

We debated whether to add this stop, knowing the castle is closed for renovations in November, The castle grounds are lovely and interesting enough to see the castle also from outside and get explanations about this interesting royal family.

I have seen many castles but never one as magnificent as this. This would have to be the most STUNNING castle in Europe. Completed in 1883 it was the first European castle entirely lit by electricity - talk about ahead of its time.
With about 160 ornately decorated rooms there is so much to see and admire - murano glass chandeliers, acres of italian marble, intricate stained glass windows, leather covered walls, original carpets.....the list goes on
My biggest regret is that I did not pay the extra money to take photos. I would highly recommend paying the extra as it is sensory overload whilst you are there and it would be great to have some pictures to remind me of everything

Peles Castle is closed for the entire month of November 2017 for cleaning. If you come during November, you can still see Pelisor Palace, King Carol's I nephew's residence on the same grounds. It has just reopened after a month long cleaning. Its smaller, offering tours and a view of the Golden Room where Queen Mary died.

I visited Peles Castle, just before closing, October 30th. As many TA reviews have said it's crowded. Tour groups inside the Castle are huge. I went with a private guide, Andri from Covinnus Travel as part of a 10 day Dracula tour, so he guided our group of 4 through Peles and it was spectacular. This was ideal as we worked our way through the drop dead gorgeous rooms at our own pace.

The 6 portrait paintings in the main hall are said to be done by Gustav Klimt in his very early years, before becoming famous and are hard to recognize as his style. However the ceiling paintings plus decorative frescoes in the Theater Hall were also designed by Klimt and Frantz Matsch; you will recognize them as Klimt's work.

Since I had no idea what I would see, my one regret was that we decided, prior to going inside, against paying the extra charge to see the second floor and paying to take photographs inside. It would now be a very expensive ticket...the 3 remaining sons of King Carol know how to extract money from the visitors! Yet, unfortunately they and whoever manages the Castle, badly needs to put the money towards restoration. Note the crumbling outer courtyard wall, haphazardly held up by wooden boards.

If your looking for a great picture, go to the furthest end of the courtyard (to the right looking at the entry) and go all the way down the steps onto the grass. Snap away.

Gift shop is disappointing; they just don't understand Capitalism as yet. Clean bathrooms and options for food on the grounds.
