Miramar Hotel & SPA
Ranked #3 of 10 Hotels in Nazare
Reviewed September 26, 2012

The Miramar Hotel claims to be a 4 star hotel but never in a million years will this hotel ever be anywhere near that rating. In my opinion it would struggle to achieve a 2 star rating.
During our stay we had no hot water for the first two days until a number of guests complained, only then did they do something about it.
Carpets in the communal areas were dirty and were never cleaned. Some greasy footprints appeared on the carpets the day after we arrived – they were still there when we left (see photo).
Lights did not work in the corridor (see photo) and those that did only came on when you reached the end.
In the Bar/Restaurant (where the food is served) the seating is nothing like it is shown on the Miramar Hotel website. It is extremely cramped and a better description would be to liken it to a canteen.
You cannot have a drink in the bar as it is constantly set out for dining. The only place to drink is outside.
The food was the worst thing about this hotel, it was DISGUSTING. I would honestly say that it was the worst food that I have ever tasted in my whole life (67 years). Here are some examples:-
You only had the choice of one “soup” each day. This was usually a variation of cabbage soup variously called “Vegetable soup”, “Farmers soup” and “Green soup”. One day we were served, for a change, “Chicken Broth” which looked and tasted just like lukewarm water.
You had the choice of one meat dish and one pasta dish on one day, the next day you would only have the choice of one fish dish and one pasta dish. If you didn’t like either it was bad luck – no other alternative.
Vegetables were only served on two occasions and were never fresh always tinned and cooked to death. Mashed potato was served on one day, they called it "Mushed Potato" (which accurately describes it), it was like thick potato soup (made from powdered potato and far too much water).
One day we had a dish called “Chicken in Oven” this consisted of chicken, complete with bones, which had just been hacked into pieces and not cleaned properly because mine still had parts of the innards attached.
On one occasion my wife and I were last into the “canteen” only to find that a seat was not available for us. The seats that we normally sat in had been taken from the row of seats and reserved for guests who were paying extra for their meal. After another argument with the abrupt and rude waitress we were allocated one of the reserved tables.
On our last night there were no labels on the food so we did not know what we were eating – neither did the staff I might add.
There were only three ashtrays available and these had to be requested from staff who were not very fluent in English and not very interested.
This is a hotel to be avoided at all costs unless you are only Bed & breakfast, then it might possibly be OK if you are prepared for a two star establishment.

Don't be put off by older reviews of this hotel. It has been recently refurbished and the rooms are now as good as you would hope for in this grade of hotel. Only the bathrooms remain the same. It would have been expensive to replace all the marble, but they are clean.

The restaurants are serving adequate food, not cordon blue (if you stay on a Newmarket Travel package you don't expect that). There isn't a separate Bar to sit in, but all the restaurants double up as bars after you have eaten. There is no rush to move you out. The seating area outside one restaurant is beside the pool. That's OK if the weather is fine, not sure what it would be like if not!

In the main the staff were very good. They like you to enjoy yourself, and do there best to help. Understanding of English is, mostly, good but one receptionist seemed to have a little problem with her language skills.

The new Spa is very good, and cheap to use by UK standards. A full, one hour massage, costs 35 Euros (at Sept. 2012). Do the conversion to sterling yourself.

Not within the hotels control, but if you travel with Newmarket be aware (or beware) of the optional excursions. Don't book before you go, you may choose not to do them all. The hotel sits above the town of Nazare, which has little to do after the first visit. You wont want to spend you holiday trying to find things to do and see in the town.

Room Tip: Rooms 107 to 115 were very good

I would absolutely recommend this hotel to people who come to enjoy the place for what it is, and not look for small imperfections.
You get what you pay for - and much more I'd say!!

Visited in the month of May for one night, we had an amazing view on the ocean, beautifully decorated room, and a tasty breakfast! Probably the best quality/value hotel during our 2 week Portugal vacation.

I stayed here for a week booked through Newmarket holidays. The hotel has been recently refurbished, and my room was beautifully clean and comfortable. The bathroom was spotless with a bath and shower. There was a minibar in the room which was nice, but very expensive - take my tip and wander up the road towards the church where there are two cafes which will sell you soft drinks and beer at a fraction of the price. Similarly, the bar prices in the hotel are very high, so go downhill a few yards to the square where there is a florist and bar run by a brother and sister - the price for a whisky is 1.70 euros as opposed to 6.50 euros at the hotel.

The hotel is set on the hill above Nazare with a beautiful view especially from the pool/bar area. As it is quite a walk into the town there is a free shuttle bus which can be booked through reception. Also for those with mobility problems, a taxi from the town back to the hotel comes in at around 3.60 euros which is very reasonable.

The staff in the hotel were (mainly) charming and willing to help although some of them did not speak much english and had trouble understanding what was needed.

Breakfast is buffet style with a good variety of breads, croissants, delicious rolls, butter jam and fruit salad as well as cakes. The cooked offering consisted of horrible hot dog sausages, overcooked scrambled eggs and delicious bacon - there was no change in this all week - it would have been nice to have boiled or fried eggs for a change. An excellent choice of fruit juices, tea and coffee.

Evening meals: This was an entirely different matter. As they were served as a buffet by arrangement with Newmarket holidays I do not feel it would be fair to blame the hotel completely for the fact that the food was generally horrible. There was a lot of fish with very few alternatives - one evening there was a truly horrible fish stew for which the alternative was tuna pasta - not much good if you are not a fish eater. Salad ingredients were good at the start of the week, but were clearly refrigerated overnight and then put out again and became very stale. Pork ribs served one evening were so tough that I could not eat them, and chicken were served that was more bone than meat and horribly oversalted so I could not eat this. There was fresh fruit available and the deserts were generally ok. Drinks were extra and there was no attempt to put fresh water on the tables.

I would not recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for one night. We checked into our room mid-afternoon and shortly after anther couple arrived in the room next door and turned on the television/radio. The sound was very clear. Also, our view out the window was of a wall about 4 feet away. Given that we hardly saw any other people nor many cars surrounding the hotel, we asked for a change of room. The young woman at the font desk told us the hotel was sold out. Given that it was mid April and during the low tourist season we found it hard to believe but decided that a bus load of tourists would be arriving later in evening. We only saw a few other people that evening and during breakfast the next morning. Thankfully, the couple next door didn't watch tv very late into the evening but it could have been very annoying.

You will need a car to get to the hotel which is on the hill overlooking the beach. Parking is free on the street although during peak season this could be problematic.

Although it has a traditional fishing village feel, the town of Nazarre is very, very touristy. There are many stores and restaurants that cater to tourists (menus are available in several different languages). Unless you want to lounge on the beach, I would pay a short visit to Nazarre but opt to stay in the nearby beautiful historic town of Obidos instead.

We were booked into this hotel by Newmarket Holidays. The hotel was clean and fresh and all but one of the staff very friendly. The meals were very enjoyable and the views down over the bay exceptional. Other reviewers have moaned about the place not being central, but they must be very unfit if they regard a car as being essential. We walked both down and up the hill every day (sometimes twice) and this entailed about 15 minutes walking each way. Perhaps these unhappy reviewers would like a hotel in the middle of town fitted with a periscope so that they could obtain a view!

The only minor glitch was an antediluvian PC in the computer room, which might bamboozle non-technically minded people. I found that I had to take the front panel from beside the CPU and hold it up to the unit so that I could push the start button. Then it sometimes had to be restarted to recognise either the mouse or the keyboard. It was running windows XP and was very slow. However, it was free, which is better than some places.

Over all, this hotel was a good place to stay. Well done Miramar.
