“We WILL be back !”
Reviewed June 5, 2011

Have just stayed for one week in this hotel. We don't travel often so i cant compare. The hotel is perfectly situated in the village, just 2 mins from the beach and there is an abundance of restaurants and cafe's outside the door. The hotel is just as you see in the pictures on their web site, it is exceptionally clean every where. Our room was the size of a large bedroom with en suite. We were at the front of the hotel which was a bit noisy at night but we closed the balcony doors and put the shutters down which solved that problem ! ( we then used the air con to keep cool ) Breakfast was adequate and beautifully presented. We found a lovely restaurant in a side street which i would recommend, Blue Jardim, was reasonably priced and the service excellent. There is an Italian ice cream shop on the sea front which i would also recommend. Overall we had a great stay in the Hotel Mare and in Nazare, and look forward to returning ! !

I first heard about this hotel through a guide and thought it was lovely however when we got there we were surprised to see it was nothing like the pictures.
-The room was small and we had two single beds instead of a couple bed which made it uncomfortable, we trid to change but the hotel was full
-about the hotel being full they forgot to mention that you can overhear every single sound from other rooms, dorrs slamming on the corridor it was vry unpleasant and hard to sleep at night
-the breakfast was very simple, no eggs nor bacon only bread and ham, cereal, a few season fruits
-the promise of a horse riding n the beach provided by the hotel was soon cut by the weather which they forgot to mention. it wasnt raining yet it wasnt sunny so it was not possibe to do the only activity which really brought us to the hotel in the first place.
-parking was impossible...
-our safe was broken so if we had something stolen the hotel would only cover for 250euro. and since the doors were so paper thin i could picture anyone breaking in very easily
-the housekeepers dont knock when they come into the room

Conclusion:
-yes the staff was friendly and helpful, the room was very tidy and clean and the location was perfect with a nice view but it does not compensate two night of not being able to rest in a romantic weekend...i also felt like i had no privacy! so i wont be coming back. i think i can find cheaper and better in the lovely city of nazaré...

We stayed in this hotel just for one night but if we come back to Nazaré ones we would stay there again. Very nice modern hotel with recently renovated rooms. Unfortunately with carpeted floor what isn't very practical for a beach hotel! It was raining the day we stayed in the hotel, therefore we couldn't benefit of our balcony with seaview! The staff was very friendly.
There is a few parking space in front of the hotel just for loading and unloading. Fortunately there we were the last guests arriving that day so we could leave our car there. Otherwise the free parking place is short walk away from the Hotel up the hill.
There is a PC in the lobby but you have to pay to use the Internet, WLAN is not available.
Breakfast was good with fresh fruits, ham and cheese, sweet cakes and cereals, the coffee unfortunately not so good. But even better is the seaview from the breakfast room on the top floor.

We enjoyed our stay in Hotel Mare, the staff were very friendly and the rooms were spacious and clean with a decent small balcony. As others have pointed out the downsides were that the parking is very far away (you can pull up outside to drop bags off though) and the internet was still not working. We only stayed one night so didn't spend too much time in the hotel as Nazare is a lovely little town with a fantastic beach, Breakfast was OK and the views from the breakfast room were amazing.

The reviews I have read here have been accurate.

Staff: Excellent, friendly and helpful

Rooms: Our room was clean, the beds were very firm and the room itself was quite small, but had a lovely small balcony where it was a pleasure to have a glass of wine (bring your cork screw) and people watch.

Note: Indeed, as stated in other reviews the walls are paper thin and we listened to our neighbours small child (two years old perhaps) cry and scream towards midnight. We never called and complained...we could tell the parents were trying to comfort the child...we just woke up a few times to the noise. That's life.

Parking: The parking area for this hotel is four blocks away up a steep hill...I'm not exaggerating. I do not have any health issues and I am 43 years old - by the time we got to the car I was a bit winded.

Price: Cheap and Cheerful - we paid 50 Euro's a night.

Breakfast: The room at the top of the hotel offered excellent views. Unfortunately, that is where the excellence stops. Faux croissants, bread for toasting, processed ham and cheese, two kinds of cereal, canned fruit and a coffee machine...that's breakfast. We stayed in a 3* in Fatima that had a much better breakfast but the room wasn't as nice...you win some you lose some.

You'll have noticed that other reviewers have stated that the internet wifi was "down"...I believe the last review to state that was in 2009. Well, now it's April 2010 and the wifi still hasn't been fixed at the Hotel Mare. As I needed to be in contact with my family I spent about 30 dollars using a pay wifi site to get connected. Ah well, remember in the old days when all you did was send a post card? I'm thinking that was a great way to live!

We used this hotel as a home base and visited Alcobaca and other places quite easily with our rental (we paid extra for the GPS - was terrific to take the back roads).

THINGS TO DO
*Take the funicular (incline train) up to Sitio for the views
*Watch the sunset on the beach
*Drink wine on your balcony and people watch
*Walk along the main drag (along side the beach) and buy souvenirs
*EAT in the many restaurants!

Warning:
There is a pastalaria across the street that sold me a couple of old chicken pastries...unfortunately I was hungry and ate them knowing that they had been out there for a couple of days...my own fault I wasn't well afterwards, however I never went back as I felt they should have told me they were old...or rather, shouldn't have been sold in the first place.

When we go back to Portugal I will stay at this hotel again...sure the beds are hard and the rooms are tiny and the walls are paper thing...but that's just all part of the adventure of a different country!

When we arrived we were given a single room but as we had booked a double this was quickly rectified. The first room was at the front of the hotel facing the street. The second room was at the back of the hotel and had a small balcony with a table and two chairs and overlooked some trees and a quiet street.Staff were very pleasant and helpful. In all we stayed four nights. Rooms are small but adequate. Bathroom was very small. Hotel was quiet except for the last night when a tour group were preparing to depart at 6.30 am and you could hear every sound they made. The car park is quite a distance from the hotel up a very steep hill. I found the walk to the car park difficult as I suffer from asthma. There is Wi Fi but internet access was broken while we were there. Breakfast is taken on the 5th floor and is just adequate but the views from the room are brilliant.Overall despite some minor gripes the hotel is very nice, good location and lots of restaurants near.Parking in the general area is difficult as it is hard to find a space but there is set down in front of the hotel, just move the plastic chains.

WE stayed at this hotel twice in one week, on our way to and from Porto. We stumbled upon it and were pleasantly surprised. the hotel was clean and comfortable, though the lack of double rooms on our second night annoyed us a bit (but we did not book in advance so i guess we cannot complain too much).

Breakfast room on the top with REALLY IMPRESSIVE views over the beach and ocean is amazing and worth coming for.

The only downside i have to point out is poor TV reception and inconsistent Wi-Fi: we had access in one room but not the other.
