“Very old, but clean and cheap.”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

This place probably will never see a renovation and had its prime in the past. All is very old standard. However, everything works. If you are not in need of a fancy flat screen, or modern Hotel, but want to pay very little, this Hotel is the right one for you. The swimming pool: worked fine. The rooms big and old, but very clean.
We paid less than 38 EUR for a double room including a decent breakfast.
It is just not fancy, so dont come here for your honeymoon.

Before I forgot, do not use the in house Restaurant. We tried to eat something right after arrival, but the waiters did not pay attention to us for 10 min, not even an acknowledgment. We tried to call them, but they tried to avoid eye contact. :) We left and were so glad, because there are some really nice Adegas and Restaurants in town.

Chaves is an interesting small town with pleasant walks along the river. The Aquae Flavae is linked to the thermal baths via a tunnel (well, more of a covered walkway) and is well-situated for access to the town. Its a large and spacious hotel which needs some serious updating. The rooms are a reasonable size and are comfortable although, again, in a slightly old-fashioned way. There are some outside facilities such as a small swimming pool, terrace and crazy golf course. Reception was helpful and the room rate was good value. The breakfast was reasonably varied -but the coffee was horrible !!!

This hotel is excellent. Of course we are talking about a very small town but at Aquae Flaviae the rooms are nice, clean and spacious. The lobby is also excellent with a nice bar and a rodizio churrascaria Brazilian style that serves really great barbecue. Great value!

A large tour-type hotel with huge lobby spaces. Rooms were adequate and the staff pleasant although we were surprised to find hotel staff in a tourist hotel who didn't speak English. Within walking distance of the old town. We hoped to use the the ancient Roman thermal baths which the hotel advertised were accessible directly from the hotel, but found they were closed, perhaps for the season. All in all , a place to stay if you're enroute and need a stopover.

Excellent staff, Excellent Location: Excellent regional cuisine: the best and not have to go to the street to go to the Thermal Spa, because there is an internal connection

Stayed here in 2006 so we must have liked it enough to come back for a couple of nights.

The hotel is large with big public areas and looks like the type of hotel that can cater for business conferences. The rooms are large, comfortable, quiet and clean. Breakfast offered hot and cold food and there was fruit salad, yoghurts etc. but the coffee was poor and the atmosphere like eating in a library.

Perhaps because we had stayed here before and were familiar with the surroundings the outstanding impression of the hotel was created by the staff. Boy are they miserable. Everywhere else we were greeted with friendly smiles and helpful staff advising us where to vist / eat etc. Here we thought someone had died.

All in all though we would recommend this hotel for a couple of nights in Chaves.

We ate at Casa Costa, Rua do Tabolado in the evening and directly opposite in the pasteleria for drinks and snacks and we recommend both.

We stayed at this hotel 4 times already. The rooms are spacious and the building is new and clean. They have an excellent restaurant and location is excellent as well within a short walk from the Castelo and downtown Chaves. Chaves by the way has excellent restaurants. I recommend: CARVALHO and O LAVRADOR.

The staff ranges from nice to detached. They have a nice bar that serves good coffee and has a nice view that overlooks the termas.

  • Liked — Spacious lobby and rooms.
