“Overnight at Amarante”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

We traveled to the north of Portugal to attend a wedding. The Navarras hotel is in a very central location in Amarante, near the historical center. The parking near the hotel is not very easy but the hotel has a car park. The rooms are clean and relatively comfortable, with a complete en-suite WC. The staff was not particularly nice, but they were helpful enough. It is a nice place if you want a central and affordable place to stay in Amarante.

We stayed in this hotel for one night. We had a family room with a double bed in one part and an extra bed + a sofa-bed in the other. There was a balcony and 2 TV sets.
The hotel is located next to the old town but it stands near the road. However it was not noisy during the night.
The room was quite spacious and comfortable for all the family. The breakfast was good too.
The hotel has no parking so it depends if there is a free space to park in the street or not.
The room was somewhat coldish and dark. There were no lamps in the living room.
Internet was not free of charge. You have to pay 2,5€ for 24h or (1€/2h)

I stayed there in june for the famous fair where they pay tribute to their patron saint gonzalo. I payed 55 euros the night. I thought it was a bit overpriced considering the rooms were old and they didnt offer free internet. On the other hand, breakfast was amazing. It was typical european style with cheese, hams... delicious!

I don't want to bad-mouth this place too much; it just turned out to be the least appealing of the five hotels we stayed at during our mini-tour of northern and central Portugal.

We had intended to stay for two nights in Braga, using that as a base for day trips out (including to Amarante); however, driving into Braga on a Friday afternoon we simply couldn't find anywhere to park up even for a short time, and even though we spotted the residencial we had earmarked, there was no way we could get anywhere near it in the car, so after a frustrating drive around the incredibly busy city centre we decided to cut our losses and head on to Amarante straight away.

Amarante is one of the hilliest places I've ever driven in, and again, it took some time to find the small and hidden away central parking area so that we could then do a bit of hotel-searching on foot (again, after a hairy time spent scooting up and down the hills during school turning-out time).

The Navarras isn't all that obvious to spot, even though it does have a sign on its roof. You enter via an anonymous doorway along a sort of raised walkway just above street level. Reception staff were very pleasant (and the chap whom we took to be the manager is quite a character). Having secured a room we then had to decide where to park (there's no parking attached to the hotel itself) - the choice is basically on the street outside (overnight only, or you have to pay thereafter), or in a close-by multi-storey , which we opted for (7.10 euros a night).

The room was a bit 'tired' and dingy (as were the corridors), albeit clean enough. We were at the back of the building, so it was reasonably quiet - apart from a cockerel which started crowing early morning. There was a balcony, but not much of a view from it. That apart, there wasn't anything we could actually complain about - the whole place just needed a good renovation.

Breakfast is in a vast ballroom-type room; it was okay, but unmemorable.

We checked out the following morning, as it was an uninspiring place and we fancied being back on the coast for our last two nights. Maybe the other 'main' hotel in the town would have been better, but accommodation isn't Amarante's strong point, which is a shame, as it's a pretty place and there are a fair number of restaurants to choose from.

First, I don't understand how Trip Advisor takes one 2-star review and one 3-star review and comes up with an average of 3.5 stars (which is what was showing before I wrote this review). I'm writing this mainly to get the total to show closer to what the reviews are actually saying. Now for the hotel: While Amarante is pretty charming, this hotel is on an ugly dusty street. The hotel is poorly marked. We walked back and forth in front of it for 10 minutes before we stumbled on its sign. The water tank on the toilet in our first room wouldn't stop filling and we had to move to another room, which was pretty shabby and not too clean. While it is an easy walk to the bus station, it's a pretty good hike from the train station. (If you are taking the train from Porto, you may find that they put you on a bus for the last section and this substitute bus leaves you near the train station, not the main bus station.) The staff was helpful and the breakfast was ok. Before staying in this hotel, I'd recommend staying an extra night in Guimaraes and taking the bus over to Amarante to hang out for the afternoon.
