“A memorable short break”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

The Hotel is very impressive when you arrive, the staff are friendly, attentive, and helpful. The large room was warm and very comfortable overlooking the river and the old town the large bathroom had a shower, bidet and BATH it was nice and warm and light , good for putting on make-up! The buffet breakfast lacked for nothing with very attentive, friendly waitresses and a beautiful dining room again overlooking the river. The outside areas are very attractive I would ike to visit again in the summer with the sunshine out and see it all opened up I bet it looks great. The hotel definitely deserves its 5 Stars.

Room Tip: Choose one overlooking the river and the old town

We were on a package with friends and the implied destination was Porto but it was,in fact, Amarante. Despite this we were delighted with the hotel, the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. It was a glorious setting, the rooms were spacious. Everything you would have expected in a 5 star establishment. The one star Michelin restaurant was a bonus.

Room Tip: Ask for a view over the river.

We and our friends have just arrived home from a great four night stay in this lovely hotel , we wanted for nothing, the breakfast was a feast and the staff were all without exception very attentive and helpful. The room was lovely and view over river amazing, one minor fault if you could call it that was unable to control the heating it was very warm in room, the windows do open !Amerente is nice enough around the hotel area and over the back is a nice park and river walk worth doing.you need a car really to go and visit other towns of which there are several worth seeing including Braga. Afternoon tea was also memorable, chocolate cake mmm ! Very different Portugal from the algarve where we would usually go but so worth the visit.recommend you make the effort!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking river if poss,it's not noisy anywhere in hotel

Good afternoon from Casa da Calçada,
Thank you very much for your fantastic comments about your stay.
It is our aim to make the stay of our guest as memorable as possible - MAGIC!
Is true that Amarante is a small and really charming city and that there is a lot of thing in the nearby area. We always recommend to rent a car to go to Guimaraes, Braga, Porto, but in case you would like to come without it, there is also public transport only 5 minutes away from the hotel.
In terms of the heating, since it is an old (but at the same time renewed) building, the heating is cenralized.

Best regards and we look forward welcoming you in a future.

My husband & I have just returned from a very welcomed break at the Casa de Calcada
The hotel is all that you need for a comfortable & welcoming holiday.
All the staff are more than helpful & nothing was an effort for them.
Our room was large & very comfortable & well equiped.
The area is beautiful but be aware the whole region is very hilly.
Was very surprised by the Art gallery ,which is called a Museum, it is a large one for such a small town but nothing should surprise you about Amarante.
Would recommend getting the coach into Porto as this is far by easier the best option.
The bus & boat tours are the best way to see a lot of Porto.
Thank you all for a great holiday

Thank you very much for your comments about our little boutique hotel.
Thank you also for writing as a Review Title - Highly Recommended.
Amarante is a beautiful and charming city full of culture. Things to visit are:
Twice a week you have the local Market where you can find anything from antiques to vinho verde (green wine). The museum is only 4 minutes walking from the hotel. The "Romanic" architecture is everywhere in town and the beautiful Tamega River will show you the beauty of the Douro River in a smaller scale.
We look forward welcoming you again in a near future.

Nice hotel, set in a very small little town so you will need a car to get out and about. This was not my favourite destination, however the hotel is charming and in a pretty little location, cannot fault anything about the hotel or its service, some nice local restaurants and bars but very little to do here. Spent a nice few relaxing days with pals. Not for those who want a vibrant citibreak, this is more for chill and relax. Excellent value.

Thank you very much for taking the time to give your feedback about our hotel and location.
I'm really glad to know that you enjoyed your stay even though Amarante wasn't what you were expecting. Amarante is a little, really charming, really Portuguese town only 30 minutes from Porto and if you are looking for a place to get inside the Portuguese way of living, gastronomy and wines, this is the perfect place. Obviously if you are looking for a more hectic area, Porto is only 30 minutes away by car (highway) - really easy access.
From all the team from Casa da Calçada we really hope to welcome you again soon.

Whilst Amarante is a straightforward drive from the airport along the A4, finding the hotelf itself was somewhat of a challenge. After getting directions from an extremely helpful girl in a local garage and a couple of calls home to my husband we managed to find our way and began our memorable short break in a beautiful hotel. (for others who find themselves in the same position the hotel is situated at one end of the old bridge. In daylight hours we realised how close we had been on a few occassions. The directions on the hotel website are actually fairly good and once in Amarante centro you need only travel up the narrow one way street to the left of building which will be in front of you when you enter the square). Our room on the first floor was spacious, comfortable and had a lovely view over the river to the church beyond. Although as others have said the bathrooms are a little dated this was not really a problem and I understand upgrades are planned in the near future. The maids who service the room and the hotel overall do a great job and deserve acknowledgement.

We found that the service from every member of staff we encountered was of a high standard. The restaurant is excellent and although remembering everyones names is difficult, their staff in particular deserve a special mention. We had intended to eat in the hotel in the evening on one occassion, but actually ate there every night. You are able to choose from the range of dishes available on the tasting menu, mix and match to your personal taste or opt for the full tasting experiences from the range on offer. There is also a menu which changes weekly and represents wonderful food at a reasonable price. The presentation of the food was always consistently high and the taste and flavours beautifully balanced. For me the standout dish was the turbot and for my companion the pork from the weekly menu, but one of our highlights was a fishy taster artfully presented in a sardine can. Breakfast is buffet style with a good range of fresh fruit, yogurt, cheeses and meats, breads and pastries. There are eggs, bacon and local sausage available, but we found that we didn't really need these. Anabelle and Eugenia, the breakfast waitresses were consistently friendly, helpful and professional.

Amarante is charming and we found that there was plenty to do. We particularly enjoyed walking along the river and exploring the winding streets of the town.In the daytime there are some nice places for both coffee and lunch. There is also a market on a Wednesday and Saturday which is worth wandering through.

A special mention must go to the two gentlemen manning the reception on the morning of Saturday the 17th November. When our hire car wouldn't start they were incredibly helpful and resolved what was a potentially stressful situation quickly and efficiently. This reflects the professionalism of the staff we encountered.

Overall, the Casa da Calcada is worth a visit and comes highly recommended. It would be an ideal location for a special break - we hope to return .

My husband and I stayed here recently with friends on a four day break. The hotel exceeded our expectations in terms of location, elegance, comfort and cleanliness. Our room, with balcony overlooking the river, was spacious and beautifully furnished. The bathroom was also spacious and well equipped, although the bath and shower combination could have done with some updating. The roof garden above the fourth floor had splendid views over the old town.

The buffet breakfast was delicious, particularly the tropical fruit and fresh fruit juices. Some of our party thought that the coffee was too strong and rather bitter and we wondered if the hotel might give some thought to serving fresh coffee directly to the table rather than from a self service urn at the buffet table.

We would particularly recommend the afternoon tea with scones, cake and biscuits, which at 5 Euros per person represented excellent value. Although we did not try the tasting menus which were quite expensive, we did opt one evening for the table d'hote menu which at 35 euros was satisfactory but not exceptional. The table service however was impeccable.

The overall service was exceptional both in terms of helpfulness and friendly courtesy. The staff at reception were particularly helpful, giving advice on and directions to the various attractions in the region, together with road and city maps.

At the price we paid via Fleetway Travel, our stay represented excellent value for money. We would certainly consider visiting this hotel again and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

Good afternoon from Casa da Calçada,

Thank you very much for your feedback about your stay at the Casa da Calçada Relais & Chateaux.
We are really glad to hear that we exceed your expectations and we are also really happy to know that you would be willing to visit us again in a future.
In terms of the constructive critic about the bathroom (shower and hairdryer), this is something that during January (when we are closed for refurbishing) are going to take care of. This is something we have already detected that it is an issue that it can easily be resolved (with little investment) and to give to our clients a better stay.
In terms of the breakfast, this is something we are also going to change in the future. For the coffee, is true that we have American coffee available through the breakfast, but if you would like to have an espresso or a cappuccino, this is something we would be more than welcome to do at no extra cost.

From all the team at Casa da Calçada, thank you for your time in writing us back to improve our service.

Best regards and looking forward welcoming you again soon.
