I spent four days in Sicily at Agriturismo Bannata. I must say it was great staying at this agriturismo. Beautifully set in the country side, far from any noise. The rooms were fantastic and very warm. they even had warm flooring. the buidling dates back from the 1600 and the architecture is fantastic. Breakfast was great too, plenty to eat. Will be back for sure in the summer time where you can enjoy the beautiful sicilian weather by the pool.

Room Tip: The rooms are beautiful and unusual being an old buidling.

We decided with my company to organize a 2-days meeting with Sicilian customers and opinion leaders in the water and gas sectors, and found Bannata location as ideal (easy to reach from both Catania and Palermo).

The result was far beyond our expectations: the conference space is functional, well equipped, and with modern structures. To our surprise, Bannata is an old 19th century sicilian masseria, with stone building, surrounded by ancient sheepyards and a natural park (where you can run if you are a runner).

The food is all produced by the landlady, who is very proud to offer you the typical and traditional sicilian and local tastes.

The only problem is the absence of any Wifi connection, but I am sure they will remedy soon...

Room Tip: Book in advance, only 5 rooms available...

We stayed at this agriturismo for one night as part of honeymoon, in September. Having noticed from other reviews that it can be quite difficult to find we were looking out for the sign on the road - however, it is totally without warning so we missed anyway. Having said that we can now confirm there is a sign going back towards Piazza Armerina in the other direction too! Better signage would be good. There was no sign of the owner while we were there but the staff were nice.

The place is itself is beautiful and has been fantastically restored. It has a lot of character, with animals like friendly dogs, ducks and chickens around, which we liked. Unfortunately the room we stayed in, which seemed to have been converted from a barn, although beautifully decorated, was completely damp. It was so humid the sheets on the bed were damp, and there was no way to deal with the problem as the room didn't have air conditioning or a dehumidifier, and there was only one window (which we kept open, but which didn't help). We passed a totally sleepless night on account of this. We were partially reanimated by some extremely strong coffee at breakfast, served by a gentleman with a fine moustache, who explained he made the jams, bread and cheese himself. The breakfast was great. We paid 120 Euro for our room, the most expensive on our whole trip, and to be honest although the place itself is nice, due to the quality of the sleep/room I would say it was totally overpriced.

Gentile Ospite,

Of all our 6 hotels we stayed in Sicily this was the most expensive and the poorest.
There was only two ( perhaps Phillipino?) men, who did maintenance, cleaning and breakfast . They tried their best and were friendly. But they are not capable to run a hotel.
The breakfast was mean and the rolls / bread were stale. Coffee was cold and left over from earlier diners.
Our room had no window and the door, if left open, was directly open to a guest path. We were moved to another room but I don't think a windowless bedroom be offered.
We did see two Italian ladies for about 2 hours on our 2 night stay. They do not live on site.
They did reduce our bill by 5 Eu a breakfast ,that's not much as each night was £ 120 EU.
Also the swimming pool was not in operation , snack bar closed ,and no chairs out by the pool which would have been pleasant.
Even the brochures in the lounge stable conversion were 3 years out of date.!

Whatever this place may be in summer, in April and May avoid it like the plague. We arrived at midday. We were met by the famale owner and a female English-speaking assistant. Our room was spacious and had a good bathroom, but it was windowlesss aned there was only one small chair. They boast they have a restaurant and bar. We asked for lunch and were told the restaurant was not open. They could provide a vegetarion evening meal only. There was a good but very expensive restaurant 3 kilometres away. After 20 minutes the two women left to attend to their other business leaving the place in sole charge of a charming Filipino who said he was the maintenance man. The vegetarian dinner was in a windowless and charmless room and we were offered ICE COLD red wine. It gets dark early in April and there was nowhere to sit and read - except in bed! During the day there were no comfortable chairs in the garden.
The next morning the two women appeared. Breakfast was minimal and the bread was stale. There were packet supermarket "toasts". The owner then showed me a "showpiece baronial hall" carved out of old stables. It was impressive and full of artefacts - but it was windowless and although 40 feet long contained only two chairs. The lighting was not sufficient to read by in the evenings - when it was not open anyway! We went out for the day. On our return the bed was not made and the room had not been cleaned. We had not been offered an evening meal and we went out.
The next morning the two women appeared again. Breakfast was better but nowhere near the standards we had elsewhere. They disappeared after about an hour and the maintenance man offered to make us an omelette and salad for dinner. He was in sole charge and the food was OK. He offered wine and I said we would prefer beer. He said there wasn't any. (It later transpired there was but there was no-one there to serve it.)
The next day we told them we would stay that night (our fourth) and pay for what we had had but we would then check out as the place did not do what it said on the tin and it was totally unacceptable. The two women became very aggressive. The assistant then insisted we had booked in for dinner that night - which was untrue. She then said we had to pay for the whole period we had booked. I said I would not.
The following morning we packed our bags and the two wome turned into Harpies. I put what we owed for the four nights on the table in cash and said we were leaving. I also mentioned that I would pay the 120 we were being charged because I had agreed to, but the official tourist notice on the wall siad that the low season price was 100 and the room was only 120 in high season. Her response was that high season started on April 1st - which was a deliberate lie. After further unpleasantness the police arrived. They were very professional, listened to both sides and then told the assistant to take our money, give me a receipt and we were free to go. It really felt like being set free from Bannata!

For being in a 'hotbed' of touristy sites, this place is miles away from the hustle and bustle of huge buses and mass tourism. The house and grounds themselves are amazing, with all the rooms in perfect condition with what seems like all the original furniture and furnishings. The highlight may be the phenomenal pool, which would seem more in place in a Los Angeles photo shoot rather than the Sicilian countryside. The meals are perhaps worth it by themselves, as a top agriturismo, it serves amazing, creative dishes in the romantic courtyard, using only fresh, local ingredients, mainly from the grounds themselves. If on a trip around the island, consider splurging for a night (or two) here.

Agriturismo Bannata is in a beautiful setting. Be aware, though, that the accommodations are rather rustic and there is no wifi so if you need to be connected, this is not the place for you. We found, though, that after getting used to not being able to read our email we were quite content to read -- how old- fashioned-- books. The breakfast was exceptional and the staff very helpful. And if you love dogs as we do, there are three of them, If you go, have a meal at Al Fogher in Piazza Armerina. It is worth every euro.
