“Austin Friar Hotel and Script Wine & Tapas Bar”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2011

Checked in and had a look around the wine bar which was tastefully decorated in a 50's theme with Ratpack paintings and 50's themed cocktail list. Try the James Dean! Wine list was impressive and presented great value. James has some great knowledge of the wines on the list and can talk at length about each one. As a cynical
ex-pat, when I think of tapas in Mullingar I cringe. Couldn't be more wrong. Tapas were on a par with an upmarket Barcelona Tapas Bar.

Staff were friendly yet not intrusive. Had good craic with the lads in their new bar and owners bent over backwards to help!

Was here for family meal a few weeks back and out of about 20 extended family members everyone had nothing but praise for the service and food. Best of luck with the new venture folks and thank you for everything!

Myself & my wife arrived at 16.15 on the 1st Sept for a 1 Day Stay. The Room was in Very good nick, TV, Tea & Coffee facilitys, Hair dryer etc, Spotless Bathroom c/w Shower. Breakfast was a treat the next Morning, I had the Full Irish ( of course ) and my better half had Smoked Salmon & Scrambled Egg, Toast tea & Coffee etc, What more could you ask for at a Price of € 29.99 each.
The friendliness of the staff, food and cleanliness of the hotel were excellent. Great value for money - We Will definitely go back.

The room was only €60 for 2 people and it was like a penthouse suite the size of it after staying in b&b's all week. Couldnt fault room, was spotless, clean.. had everything and more than you could want. The interior is fabulous, really relaxing and nice and the dinner was gorgeous.... more than you could ever eat and so tasty, we both agreed that we gave it 10/10 and the brekkie was also lovely. It is also so very central. Will be recommending this. Cannot understand the negative quotes below, its seems like we were in different places!

After arranging to meet friends in Mullingar over the course of a weekend recently, myself & my partner booked into this hotel on the recommendation of a work colleague. I was a bit dubious after seeing some of the negative comments about it on Trip Advisor but I was pleasantly surprised. It seems to be a family run hotel, is small and cosy with a quirky decor, and the staff were so helpful and courteous, nothing was too much bother. We had a four course meal, with a bottle of wine, costing a superb €50 in total per couple. Food was delicious as was the presentation of it . Our bedroom (Room 104), which overlooked the car park to the rear of the hotel (and not as noisy as I had thought it was going to be) was bigger than we would have experienced in other hotels and spotlessly clean. There were a lot of light switches in the room so it took a bit of time working out which switch operated which light...!! Most hotel rooms have very dim lighting but there was great lighting in the room that we had. We were told that the hotel bar closed at 11pm but we were literally only a stones throw from any amount of bars so that wasn't a problem. The hotel is located at the other end of the main hustle and bustle of the town (including the statue of Joe Dolan!) but there was still plenty of activity around it (Texas clothing & homeware store, SuperValu, Post Office, pubs, bookies, etc.). The window ceiling / atrium was a lovely feature and I liked the way the rooms were laid out around it with some easy chairs and tables placed there. Paid car parking is available up along a side street by the hotel, with no charge in the evenings or on Sunday. What I liked least was the cooked breakfast. My partner and friends loved it, but then again they are normal people...!! I have to say that I like my food extremely well done, burnt to a crisp even, and I suppose most chefs would disprove of that, but despite asking for it to be done this way, and stressing this fact, it still wasn't cooked to my liking. Also, there wasn't a cover on the toilet, which isn't a huge issue either, but I was afraid of dropping items from my wash bag accidentally into the toilet bowl. But apart from that, I would definitely stay here again and I will be recommending this unique hotel to all my friends and family!

Stayed in this hotel on a Saturday night July 2011. Firstly we stuck for somewhere to stay and had checked other hotels in the area who all where booked out.. Austin Friar Hotel charged us €150.00 for two people!!! Needs to say hotel accross the road, which was booked out, room rate was only €140.00 with swimming pools and gym facilites and by far a better hotel. Total disgrace been charged this(as the sign outside the door said a lot less than that for accommodation) Hotel has no bars only a breakfast room.
Rooms not Clean, bed very hard, bathroom where off very poor standard. Toilet seat lid missing, bathroom where old and very dated Outside the bedroom windows, people where joyriding all night, so couldn't sleep very noisy location.
Breakfast eatable, but don't understand why you would serve roast potatoes with cooked breakfast.
My advise if have to stay in this hotel, don't allow them to charge you for it, till you have stayed the night, or at least checked the room out, and don't be fooled like us into paying €150.00 for the pleasure.

Room Tip: Rooms are noisy

First word of warning - only pay when you are checking out or pay with a Bank Card that you can cancel if not happy!!!!!! This review is long overdue. Initially everything seemed fine and clean. But on our return we found the room to be full of flies - not just one or two - but lots all buzzing and dying some on top of the beds, on the floors, on the window in the bathroom. There was no-one on duty to call, we tried ringing the hotel, were up and down stairs looking for anyone. We ended up staying in another hotel. The following morning we went back to complain. The lady came upstairs with us and even though the flies were still there and dead, plain to be seen, she completely dismissed us. Absolutely no chance of a refund or any gesture. Front door locked early some other people had to ring and wake friends inside to get in. No night duty person. No sign to say how you would contact anyone in an emergency. We did point all this out but it went over her head she was just outraged that we would suggest that her hotel was dirty!! Very arrogant and not pleasant. Like one other reviewer no manager would come to speak with us. We will never stay there again.
