“Lovely!”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

We,(my husband, 3 kids & I) stayed here recently on a 2 night break. We were accommodated in the original part of the hotel and we loved it!! The room was clean, spacious and really comfortable. Each member of staff that I dealt with was exceptionally helpful and nothing seemed to be too much trouble from fussy eating kids to extra pillows for crotchety parents!! We ate in the bar on both nights and found it to be great food at good prices. Breakfast provided plenty of choice and again when we ordered 'off menu' it was no problem. Although there was a kids club we didn't avail of it as we did day trips but kids did enjoy playing in the pool, unfortunately I didn't get to avail of any treatments.. I highly recommend this hotel, we loved it!!

Room Tip: ask to be away from the ballroom.

I have been at this hotel in July ‘13 using a Groupon voucher. Really nice from the outside, however, I have not been impressed during the 2 days I have spent at this hotel.

At the arrival the receptionist did not know where our room was and she gave us wrong directions and we had to ask again to another member of the staff. We supposed to receive a bottle of prosecco at the arrival but it was extremelly warm – not a good way to serve it.

At the ground floor there it was a disgusting smell coming out from the kitchen, not pleasant at all. In addition the waiters were really messy during the breakfast and the cleaning either didn’t impress me – I decided to have my meal somewhere else then. The room was ok eventhough the shawer was a bit strange as did not support a confortable washing. The toilet clearly needed to be renued.

I have been there during a busy week end, however, overall I was not impressed at all by this place which is way below the 5 starts hotel standards – I am sorry but that’s my FB!

Room Tip: Strongly recommend to not choose a room at the ground floor

This well kept establishment stands on the actual grounds of the ancient Abbey. I believe the Monks would be quite contented to book a room here Today! The Staff are very helpful and considerate to their residents and assisted me many times on my 2 Night stay. Our room was pleasantly decorated and spacious and contained everything needed for a relaxing break. Roscommon town centre is within 10 Minutes walk and is a very pleasant small town where everyone appears to know each other. This Town really comes alive each Friday when the area cattle mart is held. Roscommon races is another attraction for the Horsey world when in the Summer months, they are mostly evening meetings though with the "Race Night" dances held afterwards. A pleasant and peaceful sleep with good food was enjoyed throughout our break.

Room Tip: Most rooms are quiet.

The hotel is in a lovely town, and the main building is quite lovely, as are the grounds. The staff were very welcoming and warm. The rooms are quite large and well appointed, but some of the furniture, e.g., the bedspreads were a little dated and worn-looking. The restaurant and bar food in the hotel is quite good, if heavy, and the breakfast that was included with our package was quite good, although the scrambled eggs were overcooked, as the flame on the heater was somewhat high. Nice swimming pool and gym for a hotel of it's size, the kid's club was cancelled the one night we tried it, so can't comment on that. The hotel is very centrally located and a short distance away from a lovely park with a nice playground for kids.

My wife and I had planned a trip to the Roscommon/Castlerea region to look up familial links. (They are actually very close to the Clonalis O'Connor clan but sshhhh! ) I had taken the TripAdvisor advice...as ever...and the Abbey just kept on coming up as the best place to stay for a three day exploration of the Roscommon County region. Bernie was great on arrival. Recommended the Monday evening Roscommon races as an event not to be missed, complete with courtesy taxi...so the scene was set for a great time. The room was really comfortable and spacious. Very clean as well so all was good. We lost at the races but Paddy (a wonderful taxi driver) came and collected us before too much damage was done. All of the meals we ate at the Abbey were excellent and as a traveller from Australia I would highly recommend the Abbey as a great destination and base for a tour of central Ireland.

Room Tip: Be nice to the staff. It always pays!

Stayed here for a family wedding, the reception of which also took place in the hotel.

Really handy location, almost central in Roscommon, but with a more remote and relaxed feeling thanks to the the long, well maintained drive to the entrance.

As you approach the hotel itself, the main entrance area is traditional stone built and really gives the place a top quality feel to it. The receptionist who dealt with us both on the Saturday when we arrived, and the Sunday when we left, was fantastic. Really warm and friendly and willing to share a laugh and a joke.

Once into the hotel proper, it's quite spread out in footprint terms so even taking an elevator to your floor doesn't guarantee you a short walk to your room.

Would love to stay again without the distraction of a wedding in order to try, and therefore judge, the facilities properly.

We visited Ireland for a friend's wedding and stayed at the Abbey Hotel for one night. The staff were extremely friendly and efficient. The wedding reception was held at the hotel and the food was really good especially considering they had to cater for a lot of people. The room was very comfortable and clean. I would definitely stay there again. Unfortunately we didnt stay long enough to use the spa etc.
