“Excellent service and food”
Reviewed May 2, 2012

Myself and friend went here for 1 night after buying the €69 one night B&B deal on Dealrush.ie (4 Star Abbey Hotel 1 Night B&B + Bottle of Sparkling Wine on Arrival + Dressing Gown and Slippers in your room PLUS Full Access to Award Winning Spa & Leisure Facilities). Having read on Tripadvisor some comments about other hotels who participate in these deals, I was a little anxious, but we were not disappointed. The outside of the hotel and the grounds are beautiful and well-maintained. The inside is not a modern, contempory style but is more in keeping with the Abbey theme and the ruins of the abbey on the ground with quite old-fashioned carpets and paintings but everything again is very well-maintained and clean and the style grew on me. Hats off to the staff though, from the moment we walked in the door right through to check-out the next day, each individual I spoke with was exceptionally pleasant and helpful. At one point my friend rang the front desk to report a smell of cigarette smoke in the corridor and when I left the room to go to the car I met the manager in the hallway who appeared genuinely concerned and was out doing his own little investigation. It was good to see some action being taken. Another high point of our stay was the food. We had ciabattas from the bar when we arrived and then had dinner in the hotel later that evening and I found the food excellent, definitely proper restaurant standard and presentation. I had a goats cheese starter and lamb mains whilst my friend had scallops and black pudding with apple puree for starters and also the lamb for mains and I couldn't find fault with any of the dishes. The lamb was partcularly good. We couldn't fit in dessert but had coffee and the Irish coffee was excellent as it also was when we ordered expresso and black from the bar earlier in the day. Unfortunately we didn't get time to visit the leisure facilities so I can't comment but overall, I would definitely visit again, even if it was just for a meal.

I stayed here on the recommendation of a company I was visiting, in the middle of nowhere. Roscommon was easy enough to find, and the hotel turned out to be just outside the town centre. Not that you'd know it, there was no noise, and the grounds are lovely.

All the photos of the hotel give you the most elegant views - what they dont show is the somewhat unsympathetic extensions that have been tacked on over the years. The car park is towered over by what looks like a derelict tower block - it was only as I rounded the corner I realised that this was actually the end of the hotel, the Spa, and the fire escape for the corridor I was staying on.

Receptionist was very friendly, and pointed me the way to my room. The hotel is a bit of a maze, due to the bits that have been added on - random staircases and conference rooms. I imagine it's a very popular wedding venue.

My room was in what seems to be a new wing. It was a good size, with internet access and a fair size bathroom, shower gel and a shower cap - all let down by the cheap and nasty toilet paper dispenser - if you're here more than a few days, I suggest you take your own, this is the stuff of nightmares that leads to UTIs because you can't get clean.

The bed was comfy, the radiators were noisy, and the walls were paper thin. Next door had a toddler, I know this. And why do parents let their offspring run up and down outside bedrooms?

I ate in the bar area for dinner, a truly fantastic burger with crispy chips; other popular offerings seem to be the chicken nuggets served in a poppadom basket. It was half term, so there were kids around; being wooden floors, the noise carries. Next door to the bar is a older fashioned carpeted area with low tables and fancy chairs - a bit too low to eat at, though just the ticket for afternoon tea. The staff are helpful, and have that way of the Irish dancer where the bottom half moves as they glide across the floor, and the top half stays entirely still - quite fascinating to watch.

There is also a more formal restaraunt that is also where breakfast is served. It's buffet style, with all the Irish options - sausages, black and white pudding, mushrooms, scrambled eggs etc. Toast is brought to your table, and it would have been nice to be able to specify brown bread but they were too fast for me.

In all, I'd ;like to come back here and explore some more, it's a glorious area.

We stayed at this hotel for one night to attend a wedding which was being held there. We arrived around 12,30 and it was nice to be told at check in our room was ready to use.The check in area was small with just one person at the desk who was very friendly.our room was a good size with a very large bathroom also a safe and tea and coffee making facilites. We had dinner at the wedding that night and the food was lovely as was the breakfast next morning.
All in all we enjoyed our stay despite not having time to visit the leisure center.

Stayed at the Abbey Hotel for one night earlier this month. Myself and my partner had spent several hours driving and wanted to find somewhere to stay for the night. We happened to pass the Abbey Hotel and thought we would ask at the reception whether they had any rooms available.

It was promoted as a 4* hotel, so at €79 for one night including breakfast, this appeared to be fairly reasonable.

Unfortunately there wasn't sufficient parking near the entrance to the hotel so I dropped our bags at the door and then drove around the back by the leisure centre to park.

Our room was a decent size. Decor was very outdated and felt like it had not been renovated in a few decades. The bathroom was a bit grotty - definitely not 4* standards by any means. Walls were also quite thin - we could hear next door.

Deciding what to do for dinner, we considered the in-house restaurant, however looking at the menu and prices, opted to head into Roscommon for dinner instead (which ended up being great!)

Our breakfast in the morning left an awful lot to be desired (so I was glad we hadn't eaten there to previous evening). It was a buffet style breakfast, however the food looked (and tasted) like it had been sitting there for hours and hours. Very unappetising and unfortunately a lot of what was on our plates went to waste.

In fairness to the hotel, the staff were quite friendly and helpful, the building on the outside is very attractive, and location-wise it is quite good. But I definitely do not believe this should be a 4* hotel. We stayed in another 4* hotel in Dublin the following evening and there was simply no comparison.

Stayed at the Abbey hotel for 3 nights from 13th April 2012 to 16th April 2012.

The staff were fabulous very friendly and helpful.

We ate in the bar on two nights and in the restaurant on the other night of our stay. The food was great. Plenty to choose from and the staff were very helpful in recommending the specials. We found the range of items for breakfast a bit basic considering the hotel is rated 4 star.

The rooms were great, spacious, clean and comfortable.

Would definately return

The hotel itself looked lovely from the website, and the deal booked through the hotel website sounded fantastic, with sparkling wine & chocolates on arrival.
Looking forward to a nice relaxing stay and unwind in comfort, we were excited and couldn't wait to get there. After checking in, that feeling of excitement faded rapidly.
The room did not live up to expectations of a 4 star hotel. The décor of a different time, is one thing, but everything in the room was just old, with no feeling of comfort. As for the chocolates on arrival - well as far as we could see these would have been in the room regardless of any offer! They were the thin square complimentary chocolates with hotel logo you would get free with a cup of coffee, not at all what we expected.
The Bathroom facilities were basic, and lacked in appearance, the floor tiles were old, dated and grubby looking. The shower was not at all powerful enough more like a dribble than a powerful shower. We were in the old part of the hotel, and expect that there must be some differences from that to the new part. We did ask at reception if our room was the standard, and were informed that yes this is the standard double room in the hotel, which was a shock to us. We did not eat any bar food as when we went in, the bar was pretty much empty, and didn't see any signs of this being the place to have some food. If the room allocated to us is indeed the Standard double room in the hotel, we certainly would not be asking to stay any time soon or even class this hotel as a four star like its current star rating.
