“very nice hotel”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

We stayed at this hotel for one night to attend a wedding which was being held there. We arrived around 12,30 and it was nice to be told at check in our room was ready to use.The check in area was small with just one person at the desk who was very friendly.our room was a good size with a very large bathroom also a safe and tea and coffee making facilites. We had dinner at the wedding that night and the food was lovely as was the breakfast next morning.
All in all we enjoyed our stay despite not having time to visit the leisure center.

Stayed at the Abbey Hotel for one night earlier this month. Myself and my partner had spent several hours driving and wanted to find somewhere to stay for the night. We happened to pass the Abbey Hotel and thought we would ask at the reception whether they had any rooms available.

It was promoted as a 4* hotel, so at €79 for one night including breakfast, this appeared to be fairly reasonable.

Unfortunately there wasn't sufficient parking near the entrance to the hotel so I dropped our bags at the door and then drove around the back by the leisure centre to park.

Our room was a decent size. Decor was very outdated and felt like it had not been renovated in a few decades. The bathroom was a bit grotty - definitely not 4* standards by any means. Walls were also quite thin - we could hear next door.

Deciding what to do for dinner, we considered the in-house restaurant, however looking at the menu and prices, opted to head into Roscommon for dinner instead (which ended up being great!)

Our breakfast in the morning left an awful lot to be desired (so I was glad we hadn't eaten there to previous evening). It was a buffet style breakfast, however the food looked (and tasted) like it had been sitting there for hours and hours. Very unappetising and unfortunately a lot of what was on our plates went to waste.

In fairness to the hotel, the staff were quite friendly and helpful, the building on the outside is very attractive, and location-wise it is quite good. But I definitely do not believe this should be a 4* hotel. We stayed in another 4* hotel in Dublin the following evening and there was simply no comparison.

Stayed at the Abbey hotel for 3 nights from 13th April 2012 to 16th April 2012.

The staff were fabulous very friendly and helpful.

We ate in the bar on two nights and in the restaurant on the other night of our stay. The food was great. Plenty to choose from and the staff were very helpful in recommending the specials. We found the range of items for breakfast a bit basic considering the hotel is rated 4 star.

The rooms were great, spacious, clean and comfortable.

Would definately return

The hotel itself looked lovely from the website, and the deal booked through the hotel website sounded fantastic, with sparkling wine & chocolates on arrival.
Looking forward to a nice relaxing stay and unwind in comfort, we were excited and couldn't wait to get there. After checking in, that feeling of excitement faded rapidly.
The room did not live up to expectations of a 4 star hotel. The décor of a different time, is one thing, but everything in the room was just old, with no feeling of comfort. As for the chocolates on arrival - well as far as we could see these would have been in the room regardless of any offer! They were the thin square complimentary chocolates with hotel logo you would get free with a cup of coffee, not at all what we expected.
The Bathroom facilities were basic, and lacked in appearance, the floor tiles were old, dated and grubby looking. The shower was not at all powerful enough more like a dribble than a powerful shower. We were in the old part of the hotel, and expect that there must be some differences from that to the new part. We did ask at reception if our room was the standard, and were informed that yes this is the standard double room in the hotel, which was a shock to us. We did not eat any bar food as when we went in, the bar was pretty much empty, and didn't see any signs of this being the place to have some food. If the room allocated to us is indeed the Standard double room in the hotel, we certainly would not be asking to stay any time soon or even class this hotel as a four star like its current star rating.

We were in Roscommon for a conference and this hotel had a good deal on for the weekend we were there. We didn't spend much time in the hotel though to be honest. The reception staff were nice (I had phoned ahead to warn them we would be checking in rather late) and the breakfast was nice. The bar area was also comfortable and relaxing.

We booked a twin room and got 2 single beds and a double. The room was quite big, the shower was powerful enough and in general I couldn't fault it, but I thought it was a bit strange that they made the beds with blankets and sheets instead of a duvet.

You can see the old abbey from the dining room, and it is well worth going to take a look at it if you have time

Arrived early evening and greeted by a very polite and pleasant receptionist.

Room was spotless maybe on the smaller side, however only two of us so it doesn't matter it's only for sleeping. Safety box in wardrobe is a plus. Bed was comfortable, unlike last reviewer who should note back pain is caused by soft mattress not hard, I slept like a baby.

Leisure centre is a credit to the hotel and staff who maintain it to a very high standard. Sauna , pool and steam room all spotless. I also liked the baby chair in wall very handy if I had have brought kid on break. Short and towel spinner also an extra nice touch. A couple of tiles being replaced but well signed around the area.

Bar had a great atmosphere and lobby was very inviting and cosy to have a quiet drink, again staff here ever so polite and the floor service was great.

The highlight to me was the restaurant, I've been in many cities and countries and the food served to us on our stay was some of the best I ever ate, pork belly and scallops was heaven, I'd nearly drive back now thinking of it.

I found breakfast was also good, and whilst it is self service, the sausage, bacon and pudding was all fresh and not dried out as it can be in places.

All in all I will return and bring the little people next time. Roscommon wasn't as bad I thought it would be.
