We have just had a super weekend at the Nuremore. My whole family descended on the hotel for our annual weekend away. There were 17 of us, 12 adults & 5 children. While the decor could do with a bit of updating the level of service we received was outstanding. The standard rooms were large and the family rooms are well designed with two separate sleeping areas. The food in bar as great on our first night and the bar staff could not have been more accommodating. We ate in the restaurant on the second evening and had a really lovely meal. Again the level of service was excellent. The breakfast was standard enough but well presented. Even when the youngest member of the family came down with a raging temperature in the middle of the night the reception staff were able to provide us with some calpol. The pool was great, although it was a bit cold on the Sunday. All in all we had a super weekend and will definitely consider going back.

I got married in this hotel 5 years ago and went back to stay with my husband and son.

Room was lovely and we got an upgrade which was lovely, our room had a big bathroom and a room for our son, it was very clean however the TV was very poor.

Dinner was to a very high standard and it was a lovely evening. Very relaxing and great food!

Overall had a great stay however few problems, hotel needs a face lift and the pool area was very cold!
But first class staff and food!

Just back from overnight stay and we were disappointed by the hotel.. It needs done up and a deep clean especially the pool area. Grounds well looked after more so than the hotel itself.. Needs a lot of investment spent on decor and the pool area. Hotel was dead.

Pros: Impressive size, very friendly staff, nice bar food and good quality sleep. Executive suite was very clean and warm. Breakfast was decent and even though they're supposed to stop serving at 10.30am the staff still made us feel like we were welcome to stay as long as we wanted by offering us more tea & coffee at 10.25am. Leisure centre staff were also very nice and the facial I had worked wonders.
Location-wise, it is only a minute's drive to Carrickmacross and within easy walking distance.

Cons: Depending upon which entrance you take, it can be confusing trying to find the reception. Better signposting is needed, even indoors for the breakfast area and leisure centre. The décor is quite old fashioned and in need of updating. Vending machines supplying water and snacks should be provided as well.

We stayed at Nuremore for 3 nights just after the New Year with our 5 1/2 year old and 10 month old.

On the positive side:
- Spacious old world foyer with roomy and cosy furniture and big bar/lounge adjacent made for plenty of seating options night or day and gave you a home from home feel (reminded me of Slieve Russell a bit in its roomy and old fashioned feel)
- Great staff (on the whole) - very attentive and chatty
- Great food - the bar food was particularly good and well presented, especially the fish and chips (as good as many well regarded and high end restaurants IMO). Curry was good (as another reviewer commented, but more like chipper curry than indian curry)
- Spacious bedroom that was comfortable for all four of us
- Really nice pool and spa with well maintained facilities (and it was never overcrowded during our stay)
- Restaurant food was very good (and again staff very nice and accommodating)
- Kiddie club - the young woman in charge was very pleasant and our son was thoroughly engaged each of the three evenings he attended. He couldn't wait to go again each day which is always a great sign of a quality service.

On the downside
- Terrible connectivity - Unusually, I had to bring work with me and needed to stay in touch via email and phone. O2 coverage is poor inside the hotel and was on and off (mostly the latter - not the hotel's fault admittedly) but the real issue was Wifi. Signal strength was very poor throughout the hotel and I couldn't get access when I really needed for a work deadline; this was very stressful. I didn't realise how frustrating this could all be, until for the first time in recent memory my smartphone and laptop were rendered virtually useless. The hotel really needs to upgrade their broadband access!!! In fairness, staff (notably the duty manager) were apologetic and tried to help but cutting corners is to blame.
- Staff seem overstretched - the same waiter/waitress you saw at breakfast turns up again for dinner service in a different uniform and you have to do a double-take (it's like a movie with an actor playing multiple roles). I couldn't help feel that staff were stretched to the max (a number of them said as much without being explicit) - this was evident on two occasions when a lack of staff meant la long wait between courses when we went for dinner on the Saturday night and no breakfast laid out when we arrived for the buffet breakfast one morning.
- Look and feel - the old world cosy feel of the foyer and bar gives away to worn carpets in the stairwells and a tired look in many places throughout the hotel. It wouldn't take much to spruce things up and revitalise the place but it could do with an injection of capital and some TLC. I took a walk around the back of the hotel and from the outside, it could really do with a makeover and a touch of paint.
- Walks around the grounds - I took a walk one afternoon but most trails seemed to end abruptly and go nowhere - given the extent of the grounds, they really could make more of it for non-golfers and carve out some clearly signposted trails for guests.
Room - Although we liked our room, the double bed had some springs gone at the lower end. It didn't unduly impact on our sleep but it spoke volumes about the underinvestment, attention to detail and general sense that things were going downhill.

All in all, a nice enough place but feels very much past its prime and dated; things have moved on and we have stayed in far more impressive places for the same cash in recent years. For a little investment, it could go from average to great and given what staff are doing under the circumstances, it's hard not to think they could do wonders with a little more investment and support from management.

Bottom line: Mixed feelings about recommending it or returning, but all said we enjoyed our stay.

NuremoreHotel, General Manager at Nuremore Hotel and Country Club, responded to this reviewResponded February 25, 2014

Dear Reviewer, Thank you for taking the time to post your recent review of the Nuremore. I am delighted to read the many positive things you highlight about the hotel, including the staff, food, bedrooms, kids club, pool and spa area. I would like to address the other comments in turn. We have a wifi system at the hotel, which is free of charge, however, broadband in the area is in need of an upgrade and we have been assured by eircom that we are on the schedule for the next couple of months. It has been something that we have been very active in trying to speed along, to not much avail admittedly, however, I believe the comment ‘cutting corners is to blame’ is unfair. Your comments that ‘the staff seem overstretched – the same waiter you saw at breakfast turns up again at dinner’ is surprising as this is an industry standard ‘split shift’ and part of a normal working week for waiting staff. To clarify another point; the continental breakfast is laid out on a buffet and the hot breakfast is cooked to order, however, when the hotel is busy we bring out a hot buffet for the peak time of breakfast from 10 am onwards. After a busy year, we fully acknowledge that there are areas of the hotel that need renovation including the painting and carpets that you mentioned. We implemented a schedule which started at the beginning of January, and is currently ongoing with painters and decorators. There are walks around the grounds, signposted with blue walking posts the details of which can be found at reception and in the welcome pack.
We are aware that things have moved on and that there are impressive hotels all over the country. The Nuremore was built 51 years ago, and there have been many refurbishments over the years but we have maintained a traditional country house classic decor. As a management team, we are delighted that we have been able to support staff, both those who are with is a long time, and others who leave us to pursue different avenues yet remain friends. And it is our intent to continue this support and investment for many years to come. I would be delighted to welcome you back to the hotel in the future and assure you of our best attention at all times. Eoin Pardy, General Manager
