“Early dinner with friends and children”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2012

We didn't stay here but ate at the restaurant. it was very nice and good value.

We spotted the food served all day sign as we were passing and called in for an early dinner with our friends and two children. The children's meals were a reasonable price and good quality and all the adults really enjoyed there food. the only niggle was my steak was cooked closer to medium than the rare I asked for but it was a tasty piece of meat so I didn't really mind.

I would definitely return next time I'm in the the area.

We stayed here unexpectedly with our one year old son after we were rained off camping, We turned up on spec looking very wet and dishevelled with a very lively little boy and the welcome couldn't have been nicer. The lovely receptionist showed us three different rooms to choose from and really thought about which one would be best for us in terms of noise etc for the baby. Beautiful rooms with lovely bathroom and toiletries. Great breakfast and nothing was too much trouble for all the staff we met. Much better than camping - a bargain!

We stayed on a Sunday night for B&B. It was 130 euros. Our room was lovely. We had a four poster bed. The bed linen was far too heavy for a summer and we were sweltering overnight. There was no air conditioning and the windows barely opened. We had bar food in the evening. We thought the food was very nice, and reasonably priced. However the waiting staff seemed to be rushed off their feet, and after we received our main course, we did not see sight nor sound of anyone to take away our plates or suggest a dessert or tea/coffee. We left our seats and paid up. I had a full Irish breakfast the next morning and the food is very nice. My wife had pancakes and found them lovely too. The freshly squeezed orange juice tasted weird. It tasted like punch ! On the whole, the staff are nice. The place is only just opened, so any problems with staffing or service need to be given time to be addressed. Nobody was rude, just very busy. The pricing of the rooms is a bit off for a Sunday. We will definitely come back for dinner again, but we will give the rooms a skip as it is very dear for what you get. The new owners also own Tankardstown House which we believe is the last word. However, they are making a mistake, if they price the rooms too high at the Conyngham. If you are staying here, make sure to walk up Chapel Road and follow the signs for the Hill Of Slane. Exceptional views and a wonderful historical setting.

My partner is a local
In slane.... Have been to tankards town house and food excellent so decided to try conyngham arms . We went for an evening meal we eat out a lot and I would be well into my food and cooking I got goats cheese tart to start.. Could barely taste any goats cheese onion marmalade was also disappointing.. My partner had the ribs.. They were not cooked enough and the dip tasted like mayonnaise not the blue cheese dip which was on the menu?! The main was ok I has sea trout it's was a bit watery . The problem I had we both had was no veg potato etc with main course it has to be bought as a side! A side is not basic stuff like this .... Should be included with the main, 3euro for a small portion of carrots to accompany meal.. I have to say a rip of in this economic climate.. The wine was lovely though we had the merlot. Disappointed it wasn't what we were hoping for...

Brian C, Manager at Conyngham Arms Hotel, responded to this review, September 3, 2012
Dear emo-9

My name is Brian Clarke and I am the Duty Manager here at the recently reopened Conyngham Arms hotel. Firstly I would like to thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to read that you did not enjoy your food. To be honest we have had nothing but positive feedback about the food and service in the Conyngham Arms, since we opened seven weeks ago, as you can see from the other reviews here. We have noted you review with our Head Chef Mark so he is aware of your comments and does take them on board. You would have eaten off our Bar Menu which we run from 3-10pm daily which is very reasonably priced and is well portioned. We do offer sides on the menu but we feel that the portion sizes are quite substansial already and all the Main dishes already come with a portion of either chips, potato or veg of some sort i.e
Baked Fillet of Seatrout, with beetroot and fennel salad, toasted sunflower seeds, beetroot vinaigrette
10oz Aged Sirloin of Locally Farmed Beef, roast shallot, organic salad and fries
Choice of Peppercorn sauce or wet garlic and landcress butter
Roast Rump of Lough Erne Lamb, boulangere potatoes, roast parsnip with cumin, real gravy
Fillets of Plaice with Smoked Haddock Fish Cake, creamed pointed cabbage and Newgrange rapeseed oil
Peter Whelan’s Free Range Sea Salt Black Pepper Sausage, onion marmalade, mash and gravy €11.50
Chargrilled 8oz Beef Burger, with Emantal cheese, tomato relish and walled garden leaves,
Waterford blaa and skinny fries
Roast Breast of Free Range Chicken, fondant potato, young carrots and wild mushroom cream €14
Helvic Gold Blonde Ale Battered Fish and Skinny Chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce €11.50

I hope you will come back and give us a second chance as I think the Conyngham Arms reopening has made a huge positive impact on the village of Slane as we are offering good quality, reasonably priced tasty food in a cosy atmosphere. Thank you once again for your feedback. Brian Clarke

Booked this hotel at the last minute as a half way stop between Malin Head & Waterford, it was recommended to us by the receptionist in Tankardstown House. From the moment we arrived we could see that this hotel was something special & this was backed up by a wonderful warm welcome. The hotel has been stylishly renovated with wonderful warm bright colours throughout, our bedroom was really lovely with a really nice comfy bed. We ate a superb meal in the restaurant, the home cured salmon was delicious and the fish and chips was without doubt the best we have ever eaten (their skinny homecut fries are also to die for). We met 3 lovely & chatty members of the team whilst we were in the restaurant for dinner. Breakast the following morning was also superb and again we were served by friendly & chatty staff. The quality of the food in this hotel is superb, they have put a huge emphasis on using local produce which is reflected in their menu. This is a beautiful hotel with great food and more importantly welcoming & friendly staff...we will definetely return again soon.

You must visit this hotel! Having attended a wedding at Tankardstown,(sister hotel) I got a last minute cancellation at this hotel for Bed and Breakfast. Beautifully decorated and quet room, in my own four poster bed. Even the toiletries provided were 'special' - (beautiful hand made grapefruit soap)
Breakfast was delicious and unrushed. I made it for 10.30 and noticed that they continued to serve guests who were a bit later. The staff were courteous and welcoming, a particularly pleasant receptionist who made me feel most welcome and advised me of transport options to and from Tankardstown.
I will return again, for definate!

Pity TripAdvisor isn't separating out the hotel and its restaurant since I've no idea what the hotel is like. But a very pleasant lunch or coffee spot. Two of us stopped because the five year old was starving and we were delighted with the quality of the offering for children - indeed the only difference between a child's sausage and mash and an adult one was that the locally made rare breed sausages had milder seasonings - though perhaps it would have been better to offer plain mash rather than champ for children - it took us a long time to pick every scrap of visible onion out for a child who doesn't like bits in their food. Particularly brilliant carrots for said child - small, fresh, whole and obviously not long out of the ground. Himself wasn't sure that he wanted whole carrots with traces of their tops on but once Mummy and Grandma tried to get a look in they disappeared very fast indeed. And the only thing wrong with my locally smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel was that there was too much smoked salmon - had to deconstruct it and cut it up because the flavour and volume were both a little overwhelming. Likely to revisit whenever I'm going past
