Beautiful location and very well maintained abbey. Great history with very obvious importance for the local community but also for the many who, over the years, emigrated from the district.

Not technically an abbey and now in ruins, but lovely and in a gorgeous setting. Within a cemetery that is still in use.

So glad we stopped here en route to Achill Island. It was a quiet beautiful morning and we had the place practically to ourselves. Got wonderful photos and enjoyed sitting and enjoying scenery around the ruins. There are colorful boats anchored in the bay... and swans. You can feel the souls resting here, it is truly a special place and worth the time. So many souls lie there and the stark beauty of this hillside is quite moving.

Close to Newport this abbey ( located about 2 miles outside the town towards Achill) was founded in 1469 by Sir Richard De Burg as a Dominican priory. The abbey is steeped in history and flourished until it was attacked and plundered by Cromwellian soldiers in 1652.
Burrishoole Abbey was always considered to be a holy burial place and the cemetery is still in use today. The oldest tomb in the Abbey is the O’Kelly altar tomb with a Latin inscription dated in 1623.

The abbey fell into disuse in the 18th century, and the roof eventually fell in 1793.

The nave, chancel, tower and south transept remain standing, and there are ruins of domestic buildings and a cloister.
